O driver of the departing caravans, sing, for there has come into view

before us Ḥaḍan, and Najd's east wind has greeted us.

And a true promise from the rain clouds brought us glad tidings

of dense growth of buttercups and curly clover.

And exchange with its weary camels, now tired of night travel,

melodies that spur exhausted mounts to stride swiftly.

For in that valley is a beauty with dusky lips,

smooth along the path of tears, radiant of cheek.

When combs wade through the blackness of her locks,

they mingle crumbs of musk with rose-hued ambergris.

    ولولا شقائِي لم يَطُلْ بِهمُ عهدي

    Long has it been since I saw the protected pasture and its dwellers;

and but for my misery, I would not have been apart from them so long.

I ask whoever I meet about it, and about them:

When did rain water it, and what have they done since I left?

Did their valley turn green, so they lived in bliss,

or did they exchange the lonely sandy plain for al-Ṣammān?

And does the ember of the fire they kindle

have, where they set it ablaze, a guide to my liver?

And is the sip of water they come to drink

denied to the bewildered wanderer circling for water?

I say to my companions, on the morning they sigh together:

Easy, all of you: love's sickness is contagious.

When you kindle a fire of longing, it is only

its spark that is in you; its glowing coal is with me.

I say to those wasted by love, one evening

at Buṣrā, while exhausted mounts stride swiftly, carrying us:

Halt the pale camels, you two, and ask the east wind

about the clan at al-Jarʿāʾ: what have they done since I left?

And the wind's fragrance is only sweet when it carries

tidings from Najd and from Najd's dwellers.

And it has won still more of my love and favor

through its service as envoy between the arāk tree and the laurel.

    وهيهاتَ إني في الهَوى أمَّةٌ وحدِي

    You think my state in love is like your own;

but far from it! In love, I am a whole nation by myself.

And how could my state be equal to yours,

when the greatest pain you complain of is the least of what I bear?

And through my long familiarity with love and my training

of myself to bear loved ones' nearness and distance,

I reproach eyelids that weeping does not wound,

and reject a heart that does not melt with longing.
