  1. بالنار صنعتها وفيها

    سرها وولادّها

    Its making is by fire, and in it

    are its secret and its birth.

  2. إصلاحها منها ومنها

    دائماً إفسادها

    Its improvement comes from it, and from it

    always comes its spoiling.

  3. فيها إذا بتها ومنها

    دائما إجمادُها

    In it is its melting, and from it

    always comes its solidification.

  4. وبها لدى التحمير زال

    بياضها وسوادُها

    And by it, during reddening, vanished

    its whiteness and its blackness.

  5. أو ما ترى الحمى التي

    عاد المريض عدادُها

    Or do you not see the fever whose

    recurring attack revisited the sick person?

  6. زادت فزاد مياهها

    مَتحاً وبان فسادُها

    It intensified, so more of its waters

    were drawn out, and its corruption became apparent.

  7. ولذاك رفق قوامها

    لما هدا إيقادُها

    And so its consistency grew gentle,

    when its firing subsided.

  8. وعلى اعتدال الحر حاد

    رسوبها ورمادُها

    And under moderate heat, sharp

    are its sediment and its ash.

  9. طبقات نارك لا تلّهب

    ها ولا إجمادُها

    The gradations of your fire—not its blazing,

    nor its solidification.

  10. ولها على التدريج فض

    ل زيادة تردادُها

    And through gradual treatment it gains the benefit

    of an increase in its repetition.

  11. فيصير للاجلاد من

    هادُ ربَة تعتادُها

    Thus, for hardening, there arises from

    it a practice it grows accustomed to.

  12. إن لم تعوَّد زايلت

    أرواحَها أجسادُها

    If it is not habituated, parted are

    its spirits from its bodies.

  13. وإلى قرارتها يكو

    ن لدى السبوك معادُها

    And to its depths will be

    its return during casting.

  14. والماء من أعدائها

    وبه يطيب رمادُها

    And water is among its enemies,

    and by it its ash becomes pure.

  15. ورموزنا فيها يطو

    ل لطولها تعدادها

    And our symbols concerning it—long would be

    their enumeration, because of their length.
