My life be your ransom, you traveler who has departed,

and left an abiding grief within my breast.

I had wed her, but had not yet finished my wedding,

when it was said, 'Her funeral gathering has been held.'

It pains me that you kept a grave company,

dwelling there, and left the household desolate.

So alas for you, a dwelling now turned to wasteland!

And alas for you, a paradise turned to hell!

And whenever sorrow assailed me, I would take refuge

in my home, and it would make me forget my sorrows.

But now, whenever I return in good spirits

to it, it stirs an old grief in me.

If tears could wound a cheek,

they would have left gashes on both my cheeks.

And if sorrows could bring death,

however distant, I would long since have been mouldering bones.
