Water and earth are the foundation of our craft;

both have been treated with air and fire.

It is open to the eyes, plainly visible;

I have drawn no veils before it.

أوزانها سرّها فإن علمت

فإنّ مثالها بقنطارِ

Its weights are its secret; if you know them,

then a sample of it is worth a qintar.

وإنما صبغها تولّد من

مزاج أركانها بمقدارِ

And its color arises only from

the blending of its elements in due measure,

كالنبت من مائه وتربته

والشمس قد جاءنا بأزهارِ

like a plant that, from its water and soil

and the sun, has come to us bearing flowers.

وأحكم الناس في صناعته

وأحكم الناس في صناعته

من اقتدى بالمهيمن الباري

من اقتدى بالمهيمن الباري

And the most skillful of people in his craft

is he who models himself on the Guardian, the Creator.
