Its head is turned downward in the earth,

and its foot is in the sphere of fire.

It remained within it for a time,

hurling torrent against torrent.

بجاحم للجمر فرّارِ

And the fire beneath the sea is kindled

by an ever-fleeing stoker of embers.

And the dragon's dwelling within its belly

is an island in a crumbling bank.

A refuge for devils, and above it

a chamber of the virtuous and the righteous.

له دويٌ وحفيفٌ كما

It has a rumble and a rustle, like those

of the wind when it came with a whirlwind.

Quaking, it burns whatever it passes—

animals and trees alike.

It grew hungry, yet did not suck even once

from a tail abundant in milk.
