أرىI see الأيامَthe days تُمعِنُpersist فيin عِناديopposing me
وتُنْحِيand assail بالملمّاتِwith calamities الصعابِgrievous
I see the days persist in opposing me,
I see the days persist in defying me
And assail me with grievous calamities.
And afflict me with unending tribulations
فلاso no مولىًpatron يُصيخُgives ear إِلىto نِدائيmy call
ولاand no خِلٌّclose friend يَرِقُّfeels pity لسوءِfor the misery of ماwhat بيafflicts me
So no patron gives ear to my call,
So there is no protector who responds to my call
Nor does a friend pity the misery I suffer.
Nor a friend who cares for my woeful state
ولوand if أنّيthat I دعوتُcalled upon بحالتَيْهاin both their states
معينَMu‘in (helper) المُلْكِal-Mulk (the realm) لمnot أُبطِئْI would find slow جوابيthe answer to me
Yet if, in both their states, I called upon
If I had called out to the helper of kings
Mu‘in al-Mulk, I would not wait long for an answer.
I would not have delayed the response
عسىmay الأيامُthe days تُطْلِعُهmake him rise عليناover us
طلوعَthe rising of الشمسِthe sun منthrough خَللِgaps in السَّحَابِthe clouds
May the days make him rise over us,
Perhaps the days will show us
As the sun rises through gaps in the clouds,
The rising of the sun through the clouds' gaps
فنكرعُso we drink deeply فيat مواردِهhis watering places الطَّوامِيoverflowing
ونسرحُand we roam freely فيin مراتعِهhis pastures الرِّحابِspacious
So we may drink deep at his overflowing watering places,
So we can graze in his abundant meadows
And roam freely in his spacious pastures.
And roam freely in his vast lands
