ذرِينيleave me وماand what أختارُهُI choose it منof تَصَوُّنِيmy guarding my dignity
ومَصِّيand my sipping ثِمَادَscant waters الرِزْقِof sustenance غيرَnot مُكَدَّرِmuddied
Leave me to the dignity I choose to preserve,
Leave me be, and let me choose my own path
and to sipping the scant waters of sustenance, unmuddied.
And reap the fruits of sustenance without toil or bitterness
فقدfor indeed خِيرَwas chosen ليfor me ملكُthe kingdom القَناعةِof contentment واستوتْand became equal
لديَّto me بهthrough it حالاthe two states مُقِلٍّone with little ومُكْثرِand one with much
For the kingdom of contentment was chosen for me, and equal have become
For contentment has been decreed as my kingdom
to me, through it, the states of the poor and the rich.
And with it my state is the same whether living meagerly or in plenty
وزهَّدنِيand turned me away بالكَدِّfrom toil علميmy knowledge بأننيthat I
خُلقتُI was created علىwith ماwhat فِيَّis in me غيرَnot مُخَيَّرِgiven a choice
And what has turned me from toil is my knowledge that I
My knowledge has led me to abandon hardship
was created as I am, without being given a choice.
For I was created as I am, without a choice
فلستُso I am not مفيتاletting slip بالهُويناby taking things easy مقدَّراًwhat is decreed
ولاnor بالغاًattaining بالكدِّthrough toil ماwhat لمnot يُقَدَّرِhas been decreed
So I will not, by taking things easy, miss what is decreed,
I cannot exceed what is divinely ordained
nor attain through toil what has not been decreed.
Nor force through hardship what is not destined
