I say, now that death has snatched away the one I love—

and who can grant redress against time's calamities?

Shall I remain a decaying wreck upon the earth's back,

while beneath it lies a supple, fresh-green bough?

O my eyes, pour forth blood and help me mourn,

for this loss is too great for a flowing tear.

I blame my eyelids for withholding their store,

and loathe my heart when it rests quietly within my breast.

My life be her ransom—she for whom I spent my lifeblood,

my standing, and all the wealth my hands amassed.

For her I angered my household, so each of them

was far from pleased, harboring rancor beneath his ribs.

I won her after despair and disappointment,

as a diver brings forth a pearl from the sea.

She proved as hope had wished and passion had desired:

perfection and nobility, in chastity and modesty.

My hand grew full, and my eye was gladdened

by her, however I fared in hardship or ease.

Then fate vied with me for her and left nothing

but a stricken eye and an empty hand.

I had not feared that our time together would be

so brief, and our separation last a lifetime.

    يُرَدُّ بها بعضُ الغليلِ إِلى الجَمْرِ

    The companionship we once shared has forsaken me;

through it, some of my burning longing is cast back onto the coals.

Would that we had not kept company even for a single night,

nor met before this by fate's decree.

O sleep, do not dwell upon my pillow, nor hover

over the eye of one whose two garments are drenched with rain.

What have you two, my eyes, to do with slumber,

when your light has vanished into the grave's darkness?

For no stumble of the cupbearer with a brimming cup

spills a greater flood than your abundant blood.

O death, let me join her without being faithless,

for living on after her is the height of betrayal.

O patience, depart from me in disgrace, and leave me

with the anguish of my longing and the tears it draws forth.

Do not promise me recompense for her, for she

is more delightful and sweeter to my heart than any reward.

Are heaven's houris offered me on credit,

while she is taken in ready payment, behind my back, within my chamber?

And am I to accept the promise, such as you see it,

and endure the decree, such as you know it?

And who would be pleased if his hand received

red rubies in exchange for its ten fingertips?

Yes—if she alone is my share in everlasting life,

I would be patient; how blessed an outcome of patience she would be!

May we be your ransom, forsaken one; I never wished you

separation, nor did you harbor in your breast a wish to leave me.

You rose as the full moon rises on the night of its fullness,

and excelled as it surpasses the radiant stars.

You brought us comfort until, when you had dazzled us

with radiance and splendor, you vanished as the full moon vanishes.

    أحِنُّ إليه حَنَّةَ الطيرِ للوَكْرِ

    For a time my home was full of life through you;

I longed for it as birds long for their nest.

I took shelter there, and it was a meadow of Paradise,

whose wonders swayed proudly in green robes.

Since you left it, it has grown more desolate than blazing fire,

more cramped than a grave, more barren than a wasteland.

You were nothing but God's blessing, which did not last

for me, because I could not render due thanks.

You were nothing but half my heart, safeguarding

my honor—can a heart survive without half of itself?

So if my soul should find peace with any companion

other than you, throughout my life, I shall have incurred faithlessness.

    وإلّا فإنّي عن قريبٍ على الأِثْرِ

    If one day I find consolation after you, it will be only of necessity;

otherwise, I shall soon be following in your footsteps.

May God unite us in the abode of lasting rest,

and restore our union; He is master of all affairs.

Alas, that we cannot visit one another,

and oh, my anguish, that we shall not meet until the Resurrection!

Against my will, my home stands empty, and you are lodged within my mind,

hidden from my sight, yet made present in my thoughts.
