O heart, what have you to do with love, now that

forgetting has grown sweet and lovers have desisted?

Has it not occurred to you to sober up, while those

with whom you shared passion's cup have sobered?

The breeze fell sick and recovered, yet the illness that

I suffer from has no prospect of remission.

And the lightning's throbbing ceased, yet the heart that

    my ribs enfold keeps throbbing.

Each morning, grief's burning pangs fill my breast,

and each evening, longings fill my heart.

I would give my life for him whose cord is severed

from me, though the ties of affection remain unbroken.

My heart is captive with him, and I delight in

love's captivity, while release distresses me.

I gave him my unalloyed love; he gave me unalloyed hatred.

Indeed, affection and hatred are allotted shares.

Ah, how lovely is Najd, where the roots in moist earth

are tender, and the breeze's breaths are gentle!

For its air is cool with breezes, and its soil

has a lovely surface, and its water is clear and shimmering.

And through its dwellers, should our wandering bring us to rest,

souls are healed, and the last breaths of life sustained.

The clan is at al-Jarʿāʾ; among their dwellings

are lions, wide-eyed oryx calves, and purebred steeds.

And the white blades, like cheeks, are polished,

and the dusky spears, like graceful figures, are slender.

Generosity and courage dwell in their young men,

and stinginess and timidity in their maidens.

Their archers make a habit of shooting at eyes,

and the women archers' arrows are their eyes.
