ليI have هِمَّةٌan ambition فوقabove هامِthe crowns of النَّجْمِthe stars أخمَصُهاthe arch of its foot
وإنand even though تطامنَhas bowed low تحتَbeneath العُدمpoverty مَفْرِقُهاthe parting of its hair
I have an ambition whose foot’s arch is above the stars’ crowns,
I have an ambition that rises above the stars' assembly
even though its crown bows low beneath poverty.
Though its ends lie under the abyss of oblivion
وماand never ملأتُI filled يديmy hand منwith ثروةٍwealth أبداًever
إلّاexcept وأصفرَهاand emptied it جُودٌgenerosity يُفرِّقُهاscatters it
And never have I filled my hand with wealth
I have never amassed wealth
without generosity emptying it, scattering that wealth.
Without generosity turning it yellow and scattering it
وأتعبُand the weariest الناسِof people ذوa possessor of مالٍwealth يرقِّعُهاpatches it
يدُthe hand of التجمُّلِkeeping up appearances والإقتارُand penury يخرِقُهَاtears it
And the weariest of people is one with wealth patched by
A rich man wearies people mending his wealth
the hand of keeping up appearances, while penury tears it.
While the hands of ostentation and poverty tear it apart
