إليهاto them فلاso do not تَرْجُhope for البَقاءَpermanence لماfor what تُرْجيyou hope for
I saw the nights’ loans returned
I saw the naked nights restored
to them; so do not hope that what you hope for will endure.
to them, but they hope not for permanence in that they desire,
ولمand have not تَتْركِleft الأيامُthe days للنَّمْرِto the leopard جلدَهُits hide
فتأمُلَso you might hope أنthat تُبقِيthey would spare علىupon صاحبthe owner السَّرجِof the saddle
Nor have the days left the leopard its hide,
And the days have not left the leopard his coat.
that you should hope they would spare the rider.
So think not that you can preserve your companion on his charger.
أواخرُthe latter days دهرٍof an age أشبهتْresembled فيin فَسادِهاtheir corruption
أوائِلَهاtheir beginnings ماhow أشبَهَalike الشَّرْجَone kind بالشَّرْجِto another kind
The latter days of an age resembled, in their corruption,
The ends of a time in their corruption
its first—how like one kind is to another!
resembled its beginnings. How like is sore to sore!
