ولما حللنا جميع الرموز

ولم يبق من حلنا مشكلُ

And when we had deciphered all the symbols,

and nothing remained obscure in our deciphering,

وما قاله هرمس أولا

وجاء به آخراً هرقلُ

and what Hermes first declared,

and Heraclius later brought forth,

ورمز بليناس وهو الذي

تضمنه السَّرَب المعقلُ

and Balinas's cipher, which

the fortified underground passage contained,

وما جاء في حكم الأولين

ووافقه المحكم المنزلُ

and what appeared in the wisdom of the ancients,

and which the definitive revealed Scripture confirmed,

وما رام إغماضه جابر

وهوّل فيه كما هوَلوا

and what Jabir sought to obscure,

and made seem daunting, as they had done—

سمحنا بما بخلوا كلهم

به وشرحنا الذي أجملوا

we freely shared what all of them had been stingy

with, and explained what they had left in outline.

وبحنا بأسرارهم في الذي

جمعنا وجئنا بما أهملوا

And we divulged their secrets in what

we compiled, and brought forth what they neglected:

مفاتيح مشحونة بالعلوم

بها يفتح القفل المعطل

keys laden with the sciences,

with which the disused lock is opened.

قريب بها من أقاويلهم

مصابيح زاهرة تشعلُ

Through them one draws near to their sayings;

radiant lamps are kindled.

كما بان ما جاءنا آخر

بأمثالها لا ولا أولُ

As is plain, no one of later times has come to us

with their like—no, nor anyone of earlier times.

وهذي المقاطيع فيها اختصا

ر جميع العلوم الذي طوّلوا

And these short poems contain an abridge-

ment of all the sciences they expounded at length.
