Hattem was pleased with your love though angry,
دار الهوى بين اللوى وشراف
The abode of love lies between al-Liwa and al-Sharaf
يا واثقا من عمره بشبيبة
O you who feel secure in your youth,
خجلت من عطائك الأنواء
The skies were humbled by your generosity,
سرب مها أم دمى محاريب
A tribe of lovely maidens or statues resembling them,
قم قبل إسفار الصباح
Arise before the dawn departs
لك النهي بعد الله في الخلق والأمر
You are the prophet's successor enjoying
تهن بها أشرف الأرض دارا
It was adorned by the noblest place on earth
وبارد الظلم شتيت الثغر
With the cold of injustice and scattered allure
أتجزع للفراق وهم جوار
Do you grieve for the departure though they are neighbors,
حرام على الأجفان أن ترد الغمضا
It is forbidden for eyelids to wish for slumber
الدست من لألاء وجهك مشرق
Your hand gleams with the radiance of your face,
حللت حلول الغيث في البلد المحل
You settled like rain pouring down in the homeland
إن كان دينك في الصبابة ديني
My religion is in chivalry, if your religion is in youthfulness
أأحرم دولتكم بعد ما
After I mounted aspirations and guided them,
أبثك وجدي لو أصخت لمعمود
I confide my passion to you though you are deaf to my complaints,
أهلا بطلعة زائر
Welcome to the rising of a visitor,
لولاك يا خير من يمشي على قدم
Without you, O best of those who walk on foot
ليهنك أني في حبالك عاني
I rejoice that I suffer in your bonds,
عد نصحا ملامي العذال
My blamers count advice as fault
قد كنت أكتم ما تجن جوانحي
I concealed what my innermost being did to me
آه للبرق أضاءا
Ah, for lightning that illuminates
يا هاجري ظلما وما
Oh you who migrate in oppression though you have committed no crime
مولاي إن أنا أخرت الحضور فما
My Lord, if I come late, I have no excuse
يا رب أشكو إليك من نفر
O Lord, I complain to You of a gang
حان إسفار الصباح
The morning dawn hastens
قدمت بهاء الدين أسعد مقدم
You arrived with the glory of the faith, the happiest arrival,
كذا كل يوم دولة تتجدد
Thus every day the vicissitudes are renewed
ومميل العطفين أغيد
With the graceful bending of his two sides he sways
لك ذروة البيت العتيق عماده
You have the highest and eminent abode as its pillar
قلبي في حبك معمود
My heart is immersed in love for you
لا تنظرن إلى دم أجريته
Do not look at the blood I have shed
ترى الظاعن الغادي مقيما على العهد
Do you see the ardent lover remaining faithful to his vow
مرت بجمع ليلة النفر
A group passed by one night of departure
قفوا تعجبوا من سوء حالي ومن ضري
Stand still and wonder at my sorry state and my affliction
حييت يا دار الهوى من دار
I greeted you, O abode of love, coming from an abode,
هل لأخي صبوة نزوع
Does my brother have a short return
كم أنفق الأيام في خدمة
How many days have I spent serving
لم يبق لي في هوى الغواني
No longer in passion's folly delight,
حوى أولاد عروة من أبيهم
The sons of Urwa inherited naught
يا قضيبا إذا انثنى
O spear when bent,
يا علي يومنا أو
O Ali, either today or
ما كنت أول حافظ لمضيع
I was not the first keeper of a wasted love,
قل لصديقي أبي علي
Say to my friend Abu Ali
يا خاطب الدنيا وأحداثها
O you who preach this world and its events,
ألا قل لشمس الدولة ابن محمد
Tell the sun of the state, the son of Muhammad,
مولاي يامن له أياد
My Master, You whose hands are bountiful
سقى منزلا بين الشقيقة والضال
He watered a dwelling between the meadows and the lost,
لو أن قلبك مثل قلبي مغرم
If your heart were like mine, so captivated,
قضيت شطر العمر في مدحكم
I spent half my life praising you
ملكت قلبي في الحكم فاحتكمي
You have conquered my heart, so rule it justly
قالوا سفكت دما عزيزا سفكه
They said you have shed precious blood in shedding it
تعرض للرئيس أبي علي
I addressed the chief Abu Ali
يا علو أغريت السهاد بناظري
O heights that have tempted the sleepless with my gaze,
حويت لحاملي شرفا وفخرا
I have carried for the noble ones honor and pride
أبو علي قد تجافاني
Abu Ali has estranged me
قد دخلنا حمامكم فرأينا
We entered your bathhouse and saw
بأبي من ذبت في الح
By the one whose love made me melt,
أماطت لثاما وأبدت هلالا
She unveiled and revealed a crescent moon
مولاي فخر الدين أنت إلى الندى
My Master Fakhr al-Din, you hasten to generosity
يا من جعلناه لحاجتنا
O you who we made for our need
آنسن في الفودين وخط بياض
He charmed me in the valley and adorned its whiteness
فلا يضجرنك ازدحام الوفود
Let not the crowds that flock to you annoy,
مجاهد الدين عشت ذخرا
You lived as a treasure, Mujahid ad-Din
ياصديقي مسعود حقا وما كل
O my friend Masoud, truly and not all
لا تنكرن صفار قرطاسي إذا
Deny not the messenger of my writing
ما سمحت والله يا سادتي
Alas, my friends! Never would I sell,
لا شك أنك بعد ما فارقتني
No doubt, after you left me
لئن سئم العذال طول شكايتي
Though the reproachers grow weary of my complaints
أيثبت مدحي في دواوين مدحكم
Should my praise remain recorded in the anthologies of your glory
يا من جلا بقدومه ال
O you whose auspicious arrival
ياكريم الدين المرجى إذا لم
O generous one whose kindness is hoped for, when
أبني أسامة كم تدوم موات
My sons Osama, how long will the death
قل لجمال الدين يا أكرم ال
Tell to Jamal al-Din, O noblest of men, O purest by birth
يا ابن الزريشي ما زريش
O son of Zureishi, what is Zureish
يا نائب الله في الأر
O God's deputy on earth, His caliph
فمن شبه العمر كأسا يقر
Whoever compares life to a chalice it pleases
يا قالة الشعر أما
O gatherers of poetry, is there not
خليفة الله الذي
The caliph of Allah whose
يا من إذا ضنت الأيام جائرة
O You who, when harsh days oppress
ألا يا ابن الدوامي
O son of eternity
ولقد نزعت عن الغوا
I have indeed cast off the garb of youthful folly
يا علاء الدين المرجى أعني
O Aladdin the hoped for, aid me
تعشقته واهي المواعيد مذاقا
I fell in love with him, though he is weak in keeping promises,
ألا قل لمفتخر بالمجوس
O say to him who glories in the Magi,
وأغن معسول المراشف
And he sang with the honeyed pillows
يا أهل بغداذ مالي بين أظهركم
O people of Baghdad, why am I among you
يا جلال الدين يامو
O Jalal al-Din, O shelter
إن شئت أن تلثم ثغرا كالدرر
If you wish to kiss lips like pearls
أرقت للمع برق حاجري
I stayed awake longing for the shining lightning,
لمن الركائب تستقي
For whom do ships sail
أرى الأيام صيغتها تحول
I see the days changing their shape,
أبثكم أني مشوق بكم صب
I tell you that I long for you like someone suffering from love sickness,
إلام أكتم فضلا ليس ينكتم
What excellence do I conceal that does not shine?
عيناك قد دلتا عيني منك على
Your eyes have guided my eyes to things
لا وجدتم يا أهل نعمان وجدي
O people of Nu'man, I found no solace with you, only my own solace.
يا ابن عبد الكريم كلفتنا المش
O son of Abdul Karim, you have led us on a journey,
يا منفقا أيامه
O you who spend your days
فدا عيون على الزوراء راقدة
I sacrifice my eyes for she who lies asleep in the sands
تفكر في زمان نحن فيه
Reflect upon an era we're in
حتام مطلك يا ظلوم
For how long, O unjust one, will you avoid me?
لم أمس في سفك الدماء محكما
I did not excel in shedding blood
وجه يحيى بن بختيار إذا فك
The face of Yahya ibn Bakhtiyar when he smiles
ألا ياسمي الإمام الوصي
O namesake of the Imam and successor
إذا اجتمعت في مجلس الشرب سبعة
When seven gather in a drinking place
لئن أخرتني الحادثات وقصرت
Though events have delayed me and shortened
جاء بدستبوية
He came with a yellow rose
وغزال علقته
I hunted a gazelle
وقائل قال لي لما رآني في
And one who saw me in the October cold,
يا بأبي المختلس المستلب
O my father who passed away silently and suddenly,
بغى يا ابن الخطيب عليك قوم
They wronged you, son of the preacher
قم بين أكسار البيوت وناد
Arise amidst the ruins of homes and call out,
وقائلة قم واسع في طلب الغنى
A speaker says, arise and seek wealth far and wide
أترضون يا أهل بغداذ لي
Do you consent, O people of Baghdad
لنا يا أبا حسن عادة
For us, O Abū Ḥasan, there is a habit
من عذيري فيه وهل من عذير
My excuse is clear, though excuse there’s none
مدحك لا يستطيعه البشر
Your praise is beyond the capability of humans,
وأغيد ما عنه للصب صبر
The most immense of what the young lover's patience towards passion protects him from is blame, and to passion he retreats.
ختان جرى بالنجح واليمن طائره
The bird of his success and good fortune flew smoothly,
ما بعتكم مرخصا ما عن من عمري
I did not sell you out of choice, nor willingly
وخيال سرى إلي فأدنا
A vision came to me, so very close
أترى تعود لنا كما
Will the nights with lightning come back to us,
يا عماد الدين يا من
O pillar of faith, O you
وباخل جاد على بخله
A miser in his stinginess brought
ما سمع الناس ولا أبصروا
What people have not heard of nor seen
يا عماد الدين يا من
O pillar of faith, O you
سقى صوب الحيا دمنا
The destiny of life watered our blood
وقائلة مالي رأيتك معدما
A woman said, why have I seen you destitute,
ألا مبلغ عني المهين ابن عروة
Will not a messenger convey to the ignoble son of 'Urwa
ستارة ترخى على مجلس
A curtain is cast over a gathering
وقالوا استبانت يا ابن عروة إبنتك
They said your daughter has gone astray, o son of Urwah
يا موسعي جفوة وصدا
O you who have been ungenerous and aloof,
أيها الرائح المجد
O gentle breeze of glory
حلفت بمسراها بحربة بزلا
I swore by her passage, with spear-like glances,
خليفة الله أنت في الدين وال
O Caliph of Allah in religion and the world
خليفة الله الذي وعوده لا تخلف
The caliph of Allah whose promises are never broken
ألا يا بن أبي المج
Alas, O son of Abu Majd, you offered
لميمون وجه يسوء العيون
A face so sullen it offends the eyes
أمط اللثام عن العذار السائل
Unveil your reproach from the fault-finding censurer,
يا معشر الرؤساء والأصحاب
O leaders and companions,
يا رب كيف بلوتني بعصابة
O Lord, how You have tested me with a gang
كل يوم لك بين واحتمال
Each day for you is clear and endurable
جادك الواكف الهتن
The passionate lover stopped by the dwelling,
أثقل ظهري بالمنن
He burdened my back with kindness,
نعمت زمانا مع المترفين
I lived in luxury with the indulgent for a time,
إن الأجل وما رأى أحدا
For fate and what one sees has yet
أسفت وقد نضت عني الليالي
I regret as the nights have passed me by
مالي على جور الليالي صاحب
I have no companion to alleviate the tyranny of nights,
لك يا أمير المؤمنين يد
You have power, O Commander of the Faithful,
يا معشر الشعراء قا
O community of poets, beware
يا من رعيت له الوداد تمسكا
O you whose affection I tended, clinging
أرى في منامي كل شيء يسرني
In my dreams, I see everything that delights me,
وأقسم لو سمتني أن تنال
I swear, if you dared me to pluck
نزلت بساحة أهلك الأفراح
Joy descended in the courtyard of your family
أي نار ضرمت في كبدي
What fire has flared in my heart,
ومجلس ضمني وشخصا
A gathering enclosed me and a person
يا صلاح الدين خذ حذ
O Salah al-Din, take heed
أبلغ أبا الريان من عاتب
Convey to Abul-Rayyan from the reproacher
سيدي يا ابن جعفر أنت أعلى
My master, O son of Ja'far, you are of the highest ambition
رب الزمان أجل قد
The Lord of Time is glorious indeed
يالك من يوم له حرمة
O what a day of reverence it is
لو لان قلبك في الهوى
Had your heart been in love,
لو أنشرت رمم القضاة تجملت
If the splendour of judges were to be unveiled
في كل يوم منك يا دهر
Each day brings me, O Time,
عسى قاعد الحظ يوما يثب
May the wheel of fate awake one day and rise,
أدر كأس المدام علي صرفا
Pour me a cup of wine pure and unmixed,
ولقد مدحتكم على جهل بكم
I praised you in ignorance of your true selves,
بستان جعفر مثله
Ja'far's garden resembles him
أصبحت ظلا على من ظل دولته
You have become a shade over those whose power reigns,
يا روح كل اجتماع
O spirit of every gathering
ألا أبلغ عماد الدين عني
Deliver from me to Imād al-Dīn
حمام دارك جنة لنزيله
The dovecote of your house is a paradise for its lodger
هدية المرء تنبي عن مرؤته
A man's gift reveals his dignity
لنا صاحب قالص ظله
We have a friend, his shadow is stingy
للدهر يا أبناء معمر
O sons of long-lived forebears, for time
صحبنا في بطالته سعيدا
Our companion was happy in his leisure
ليهنك أن عيني ما تنام
Let it bring you joy that my eyes do not sleep,
قد أقلعت فاصفحوا عن جرمها الغير
She has desisted, so forgive her transgression, O noble ones,
وعدت بأن تنفذ لي حصيرا
You promised to weave a mat for me
يا خير من لبس النعال وخير من
O best of those who donned sandals and best
لدينا يا ابن إسماعيل قدر
We have, O son of Ishmael, a steaming pot
أتنكر قتلي بألحاظها
Do you deny you killed me with your glances?
ولقد مدحتك يا ابن نصر مدحة
I praised you, O son of Nasr, with praise
كتبت إليك وظني بأن
I wrote to you thinking that
أرى في منامي كل شيء يسرني
In my dreams, everything delights me,
قد فنيت في هواكم عددي
My endurance for your love has vanished
سل عن الماضين إن نطقت
Ask about the past, if the ruins and ponds speak of them,
قل لمجد الدين الذي ختم الجو
Say to the glory of al-Din, by whom excellence was sealed,
أبا الجود ما ناديك بالجود معمور
O generous one, neither the generous one hopes for you
قل لأبي النقص والمخازي
Say to Abu al-Naqs and reproaches,
قم فاغتنم غفلة الزمان
Arise, seize the heedless moment
ما كنت أحسب أن عه
I did not expect that your covenant
بعلو جدك يسعد الدهر
With your great ancestry, time becomes auspicious,
يا رب قد حج الوزير
O Lord, the minister has made the pilgrimage
من مجيري ومن يجير على ذي
Who can protect me, who can give refuge
أحق دار وأولى أن نهنئها
Is there a home more deserving that we congratulate
لم أنس قواتها يوم الوداع وقد
I have not forgotten her slender fingers the day we parted
يا ابن الدوامي الذي هو عصمة
O son of generosity, who is a safeguard
لما أتتنا هداياه مفاجأة
When his gifts came to us unexpectedly
رمتني الليالي من مصابك يا أخي
My nights have pelted me with anguish over you, my brother,
ألا يا ابن الحصين جمعت نفسا
Alas, O son of Al-Hasin, you have gathered
يا عضد الدين دعاء امرىء
O supporter of religion, the prayer of a man
أي فقير بعطاياك يا
O most generous of womenkind
وباخل بت في أرجاء منزله
And a miser whose harshness pervades his home
شكري لسيب نوالك الغمر
My gratitude for the downpour of your gifts,
يا جلال الدين يا ملكا
O Jalal al-Din, O King
يا من له قدم في الفضل راسخة
O you whose footsteps in excellence are firmly rooted
مالك يا خدن السماح والباس
Why do you spurn me, O pillar of lenience and dignity
خلوا ملامي في هجاء امرىء
Leave my critics to rail against a man
لك يا شهاب الدين أخ
You, O Shihāb al-Dīn, my brother,
ألا يا أبا الفرج الأريحي
O Abu Al-Faraj Al-Isfahani
لحى الله شيبان إن صح أن
May God grace Sheyban's white hair, if true be
أياعضد الدين شكوى فتى
O pillar of the faith, the complaint of a young man
بالقصر من بغداذ لا بطياس
In the palace of Baghdad, not in robes,
صديق أفادتني الحداثة وده
A friend whose affection modernity made easy for me to steer
إليك أمير المؤمنين قضية
To you, O Commander of the Faithful, I present a case
يالك من ليل حجا
O night of pitch darkness
يا علي يا ابن الخلائف والمح
O Ali, O son of the Caliphs and the slain
يا زمن السوء الذي مسني
O evil time that has afflicted me
يا رب بكر عاتق
Oh Lord of the early morning dawn
بات يجلوها على ند
He started reciting it to the tunes of his songs, and the night was pitch dark,
يا مهدي الورد الجني لنا
O guide of the rose bouquet for us
ما ذقت قط أمر من أمري
I have never tasted anything more bitter than this
يا سيدا هو عدتي
O my master, you are my asset
ألا يا أبا الحسن المستماح
O father of al-Hasan the supplicant
أيطمع أن يساجلك السحاب
وبخيلة سمح الرقا
لكل ما طال به الدهر أمد
جد بقلبي ومزح
عصر الشباب تصرمت أوقاته
قال أطباؤه لعوده
ألا يا حمامة لا صوحت
أرى ماء وردكم قد سرت
هي الأيام صحتها سقام
أبثك مجد الدين حالا سماعها
دع الحرص فالحر من لا يبي
قل للنجيب محمد يا من له
طرقت ودون طروقها
يا صاحبي لمن هذه
عسى مر أنفاس النسيم المردد
دويت بغيظ صدورها الحساد
لو بات من يلحي عليك مسهدا
يا عضد الدين أنت معتمدي
نار جوى في الضلوع تتقد
لا أوحش الله ممن
هل أنت يا أخت القضيب الناضر
طاف يسعى بها على الجلاس
خلصوني من كف حجامكم ه
لوت الستون عودي
لو أنصفت ذات النصيف
لم يبق فيك لمشتاق إذا وقفا
أعيذك من لوعتي واشتياقي
ألا منصف لي من ظالم
وحلوة الريق باتت
عسى غزال الأبرق
لا تخش إملاقا إذا اعتلقت
غاداك من بحر الرواعد مسبل
سقاك سار من الوسمي هتان
يا خير منتصر لخير إمام
إن أخلقت ثوب شبابي الأيام
الحمد لله عوفي الكرم
ولائمة لي في الهجاء أجبتها
تأوبني فأرقني خيال
أولعت بالغدر في أيمانها
يا مشرق البحر الخضم بمائه
سقاها الحيا من أربع وطلول
أتظنني ما عشت أنعم بالا
ألا من لمسجون بغير جناية
حياك الربيع من فصاح أعاجم
يا من رأى حد الحسام مضاءه
زفرات وجد ما يبوخ ضرامها
يا عماد الدين يا أك
أيا مولاي مجد الدين يا من
سحاب الجود هامي الودق ساكب
يا سادتي ما لكم جزتم
واعجبي وحادث الد
إصبر لدهر قد ناب وارتقب
يا قاصدا بغداذ جذ عن بلدة
يا ابن الأكابر من ذؤا
يا ابن الحميد إني نصيح
وروضة غناء باكرتها
ياابن الدوامي الذي
يا ابن المعلم ما لدائك
قل لابن نصر ياذا العطاء ويا
وجه حميد إن تأملته
عسى الدهر يوما بالبخيلة يسمح
عليل الشوق فيك متى يصح
ما لي أرضى والبحر معترض
قد كنت ذا قولين فيك ومشكلا
لحا الله ليلا في العراق سهرته
قالوا أبو الريان صن
أيا السيد ما ساع
فدتك عماد الدين نفسي وما حوت
بأبي وجه هلال
ياسمي النبي يا ابن علي
هجر العفيف أخا له
أنا في كف من به تفخر الأر
حاشا لمجدك من شكوى يعاد لها
عذيري من أبي بشر
يا عضد الدين دعاء امرئ
أبني أسامة قد دنا الأمر
ألفجر ليلك بالبنية مطلع
فعلت وأنجزت فعل الكرام
يا لها من قصة معجبة
لئن سئم العواد طول شكايتي
مولاي يا من غرست كفه
خذ من شبابك وانتهز
يا صحابي هل أخو ثقة
يا نازحا ليس يدنو
لا بارك الله في قوم صحبتهم
لأبي علي مرتقى
مولاي مجد الدين يا
أطلت وقوفي على بابكم
يا ابن الدوامي الذي
قوادة فارهة
بمن أباحك قتلي
قولا لمن أبدى بلا سبب
مات السماح فاسفحي
يا من يهز قوامه
وجه سعيد إذا تأمله ال
قل لكريم الدين يا
أفحمني النظم البديع الذي
أيا عضد الدين يا من غدا
ومغن إذا الغناء شفا الهم
ما لي أرى كتبي بغير جناية
شويكة قصابكم قد أغار
يا جمال الدين الذي أظهر العد
وباخل قدم لي شمعة
جبة طال عمرها فغدت تص
وقالوا الغنى عرض للخطوب
فبت وباتت إلى جانبي
حث كؤوس الراح
