1. I fell in love with him, though he is weak in keeping promises,
We see in love every day from him a new character,

2. More averse than my eyelids from seeing him,
And weaker than my resolve on patience, longing for him.

3. Often blaming whenever his kindness to his lovers lessened,
God increases for him lovers.

4. Misfortunes roam on his forehead,
As the bending branch sheds its leaves.

5. And they said he escaped from the sting of death on his cheek,
So I said you have admitted that in his mouth there is an antidote.

6. I complained to him of my agony, and he said to me,
Is there agony unless you suffer and long?

7. If you fall for the beautiful but have no
Patience for ordeals, then do not be a lover.

Our neighbors in love, if love was just

9. We would reward you with tears and passions.
We stayed up while you slept, you will not find comfort,

10. In one who spends the night with a heart longing.

11. When we got along and made ready for intimacy,
You traveled away as moons and left behind yearning.

12. I did not know before separation that from love there is
A cutting of necks and from white swords, slaughter.

13. On them may the horizon, after them, shine
With my tears if tears remain overflowing for me.

14. It is no wonder that my tearing passions
Increase with the water of tears, burning and igniting.

15. For in the cheek of my beloved there is a fire whose burning
Is mixed with the water of youth dripping.

16. So do not blame one who does not repent of his passion,
Unless you have tasted the separation of lovers.

17. And do not hope for relief for one seized
By gratitude to the son of al-Muzaffar a release.

18. A young man whose world is seen only as an expanse,
And gains only praise which lifts him high.

19. When the market of praise is crowded with a poet
Who established for praises his call.

20. I say to one who hits the desert recklessly and
Makes his mounts swim with the evening breeze and necks swaying,

21. As if his pack animal rides terror in the darkness,
The specter of night who is used to beds creaking.

22. Sing of Abu Nasr you sing of one balanced,
Whose glories overflow with delegations and creaking.

23. The most honored of people as a neighbor, the most protected a ward,
And the most generous of house, ancient and noble roots.

24. If the hopes of every hopeful fail,
Do not fear what you hoped, its flowing is failing.

25. Generous, his generosity equals his bashfulness,
So you find him giving to his hopefuls rain pouring.

26. When war brings helpers close, his charging turns
The necks of heroes among the whites to split open.

27. Good for you, I delayed my praises for an obtainer
Who bestowed on me and no ties tomorrow are freeing me.

28. Not that the fresh well sweetened
Its drinks, and the spacious house became narrow.

29. Nor that the causes of affection between us
Became—God forbid—specks and morals.

30. But when the Nile flood harmed you
And spending excessively brought you to debt.

31. And your palm was full with states overflowing
Beyond destitution, giving and spending.

32. I disliked that my praises bring you
Profit, so I delayed them for you in compassion.

33. By God, how you adorned us with deeds
As necklaces adorn the necks of doves.

34. If you lightened with giving burdens
Heavy, then you weighed down with giving necks.

35. Glory weakened and you remained a ruler
Extending over horizons your shade spreading.

36. To your pens, judgments in the world return
So you distribute terms for them and sustenance.

37. You still run accomplishing every limit
Of glory, your tail waving, outpacing.

38. From you, virtues do not lack custom
Nor praises, your morals denying.
