1. My excuse is clear, though excuse there’s none
For loving one whose glances make hearts run

2. With languid eyes that kindled raging fires
Though cool themselves and lacking all desire

3. By my dark-haired love, so sly and coy
Who came upon me, taking me by joy

4. With lips like rosebuds, cheeks a garden fair
Mid meadows and a lake, surpassing rare

5. He mixes wine for me with purest bliss
As bees make honey perfumed with camphor

6. At night he came to me, his sleep to brush
Away, and opened both his eyes ablush

7. Breaking the chains of slumber. Darkness fled
As broke the ranks of night in disarray

8. I said “Arise, and let the morn be bride
To revelers whose youth will never fade”

9. From treasures of great kings in days of old
To Cyrus came a coat with gems inset

10. Cast off the winter chill with flames around
And rout the wings of darkness with your light

11. Give me to drink the smallest cup, for love
Has left no need for larger draughts in me

12. Tavern-keeper, with your enchanting face
Gently attend the drinker lost in grace

13. Your empty heart cannot know how I pine
In sorrow and in sighing for your wine

14. I made your glance the judge, so judge my blood
That's free of guilt, no sentence there incurred

15. My boon companion, though I've wasted time
In revelry, I've wearied of the wine

16. The days have turned my hair to gray; return
My borrowed youth, reclaim what you did lend

17. For one long night of care I was recompensed
With days of brief delight that swiftly end

18. The singing girls forget me, though my hair
Betrays no whitening to show my age

19. So I'm content with little friendship, I
Who never would have settled for the small

20. With phantom promises and pledges void
The days of wildness now have been destroyed

21. So greetings to old age and reverence
As childhood ends and youthful garb cast off

22. The years, events, have shortened my garment's train
Once long and now cut down in life's campaign

23. But now again the times are just and fair
Led by an Imam to whom praise is due

24. The clouds rain goodness down on all the land
And bounty flows like floods both far and wide

25. Bestowing ample shade on every tribe
A leader worthy of the name does guide

26. So I rejoice today in gifts he gave
And don my robe of joy without reserve

27. The best poets, long neglected, now demand
Great bride-prices, as before they did deserve

28. Among my peers I dwelt as one forgot
Like a deserted mosque to pray in not

29. But now restored, my hopes again take flight
As to the pillar, my old faith, I cling

30. May God defend the faith, as He did when
Al-Nasir came, that pious victor then

31. To guard the caliphate for Islam's sake
With His fierce lions God did undertake

32. A king who buys cheap praise with gifts galore
And sacrifices much for glory's shore

33. A Hashimite, in counsel and thought inclined,
In resolution, reason and in mind

34. To whom the best of people make recourse
As to a spring that floods can not cut off

35. Spears pierce the armored horseman on his steed
And strategy brings down the brutal force

36. His armies grant the vultures ample feast
And many a neck lies strewn about the waste

37. We see reiterated what was done
By his forefather, he who victory won

38. Conquering mighty citadels, so high
Their eagles by our falcons made to die

39. Capturing the foe with curved swords deftly drawn
And keen-edged blades that through their necks were thrown

40. Spending the long night in prayer, divine
Communion, fasting till night's gloom has pined

41. Imam who by his guidance did divide
For all mankind the lawful and denied

42. By whom salvation may be hoped for when
Men's deeds are weighed upon the final day

43. Lord of the age, Your providence does guide
Your servants' fate by Your commands applied

44. The days and nights are servants unto You
So rule, Almighty King, in wisdom true

45. The best successor for defending right
And for the faithful, best of men to lead

46. Helper of few, refuge for victims robbed
Succor of troubled souls by You are sobbed

47. Strong Breaker of the mighty, Lifter-up
Of lowly ones from bottommost decline

48. Many a day, clouded in darkened mood
Scowling at tyranny, harsh, terrible

49. You ride out on such days, and earth bows down
Your banners flutter, circling Your renown

50. The night takes flight before Your cavalry
While day's bright face beams on gloriously

51. A Thursday eve, Your regiments chant and roar
With prayers and proclaiming "God is Great"

52. Dark lions, Turkic slaves, who won't be tamed
Save by the scarred necks of their peers maimed

53. They rip apart landmarks, beautifully done
And if you cross them, they'll tear down your roads

54. Each a snarling wolf in the wide wild
Baring its flashing teeth in fury riled

55. Brandishing verdant swords like meadows green
Galloping on by river and ravine

56. Heroes when battle calls, yet gentle prey
Among the does when weapons laid away

57. The brow carved with the poetry of his sword
Inscribed by the sharp blows that it has scored

58. Filled by you with glory, each deed a gain
Sees heights scaled by striving and ardor's flame

59. May God reward you far better than
A leader whose great efforts we commend

60. Son of the best of men, after the Guide
For all mankind, the Prophet true, allied

61. Successor to the prophets, dwelling by
The Holy House enclosed in drapes close by

62. A people loving whom and obeying their command
Protects us from hell's flames and suffering banned

63. Praising them at Judgement will be my reserve
When I am dispossessed of all conserved

64. My noble partisans and helpers tried
When few within mankind at my side

65. For them the caliphate's rising and its noon
From every minbar and from every throne

66. Spirits like stars, intrepid in the fight
Faces illuminating darkest night

67. Fierce as mountains, yet most gentle, mild
Hands whiter than the radiant light, my shield

68. You follow them, and void what people say
No first remains when comes the final day

69. So last, eternal in this world remain
And end duration that makes centuries vain

70. Complete this month whose favor upon men
No other month's favor can match again

71. Each day the heavens bow down in greeting
While songs of celebration fill your plains
