1. I have never tasted anything more bitter than this
Amidst prosperity, affluence, and dates
١. ما ذُقتُ قَطُّ أَمَرَّ مِن أَمري
في البُسرِ وَالسيلانِ وَالتَمرِ
2. I braved fears, bandits, and the tents
Of the Banu ‘Amr, amidst the winds
٢. جازَ المَخاوِفَ وَالشُراةَ وَأَص
حابُ البَدارِقِ مِن بَني عَمرِو
3. In those twisting valleys, between
The rising and ebbing tides
٣. وَالريحَ في تِلكَ الذَنائِبِ ما
بَينَ اِختِلافِ المَدِّ وَالجَزرِ
4. And waves like mountains, when the sailor
Furrows through them seeking deliverance
٤. وَالمَوجَ أَمثالَ الجِبالِ إِذا ال
مَلّاحِ شَقَّلَ فيهِ لِلعَبرِ
5. Until when the ill-omened one reached
The exalted river's bank, by the bridge
٥. حَتّى إِذا وَصَلَ المَشومُ إِلى
نَهرِ المُعَلّى جانِبَ الجِسرِ
6. Misfortunes befell me there, though
I was unaware, I know not whence
٦. دَهَمَتنِيَ الآفاتُ فيهِ وَلَم
أَفطَن بِها مِن حَيثُ لا أَدري
7. And talkative slave boys came
Successively like drops of rain
٧. وَأَتَوهُ غِلمانٌ زَبانِيَةٌ
يَتَتابَعونَ تَتابُعَ القَطرِ
8. Until they had loaded for their day
What the sailor had lowered in a month
٨. حَتّى لَقَد رَفَعوا لِيومِهِمُ
ما حَطَّهُ المَلّاحُ في شَهرِ
9. So spare me your negligence, if I ask you
And soothe my breast by answering me
٩. فَدَعوا التَغافُلَ إِن سَأَلتُكُمُ
وَاِشفوا بِرَدِّ جَوابِكُم صَدري
10. How did you judge it right, with your uniqueness
Above all creation, in arrogance and pride
١٠. كَيفَ اِستَخَرتُم مَع تَفَرُّدِكُم
دونَ الوَرى بِالتِيَّهِ وَالكِبرِ
11. To spurn me without cause
With no excuse you cling to or reason
١١. أَن تُعرِضوا مِن غَيرِ ما سَبَبٍ
تَتَشَبَّثونَ بِهِ وَلا عُذرِ
12. A gift that came to your poet
From other than you, of cherished worth
١٢. لِهَدِيَّةٍ جاءَت لِشاعِرِكُم
مِن غَيرِكُم مَنزورَةِ القَدرِ
13. It's as if I never wove for you
In your praise a verse of poetry
١٣. حَتّى كَأَنّي ما نَظَمتُ لَكُم
في مَدحِكُم بَيتاً مِنَ الشِعَرِ
14. Or clothed you in perfumed robes
With praise in my verse and prose
١٤. وَكَسَوتُكُم حُلَلاً مُفوَّفَةً
بِالحَمدِ مِن نَظمي وَمِن نَثري
15. Or spread among the settlements the mention of you
Beyond the perfume sellers' musk bags
١٥. وَنَشَرتُ في الأَحياءِ ذِكرَكُمُ
فَضَّ التِجارِ لَطيمَةَ العِطرِ
16. By the one to whom the pilgrims' aspire
And the House of curtains and stones
١٦. قَسَماً بِمَن قَصَدَ الحَجيجُ لَهُ
وَالبَيتِ ذي الأَستارِ وَالحِجرِ
17. As long as I look upon your faces
Will I attain success in my latter days
١٧. ما دُمتُ أَنظُرُ في وُجوهِكُمُ
إِن كُنتُ أُفلِحُ آخِرَ الدَهرِ
18. And I will weep—such is my state with you—
For what you wasted of my life
١٨. وَلَأَبكِيَنَّ وَهَذِهِ مَعَكُم
حالي لِما ضَيَّعتَ مِن عُمري
19. And you will know who is foolish when
I leave you and you recognise my worth
١٩. وَسَتَعلَمونَ مَنِ الغَبينُ إِذا
فارَقتُكُم وَعَرَفتُمُ قَدري
