حتام مطلك يا ظلوم

1. For how long, O unjust one, will you avoid me?
When will my grievance be redressed?

١. حَتّامَ مَطلُكَ يا ظَلومُ
ماآنَ أَن يُقضى الغَريمُ

2. If your affection is unattainable,
Then my love is unending torment.

٢. إِن كانَ وَصلُكَ ما يُرا
مُ فَإِنَّ وَجدي ما يَريمُ

3. Whoever's heart is free of passion's agony,
I'm not that stoic one.

٣. مَن باتَ ذا قَلبٍ سَلي
مٍ مِن جَوىً فَأَنا السَليمُ

4. Why do I conceal my love
As my aching heart grows more forlorn?

٤. مالي إِذا رُمتُ السُلُو
وَ تَلَوَّمَ القَلبُ المُليمُ

5. With my sorrows unspoken
My teary eyes already tell.

٥. وَإِذا كَتَمتُ السِرَّ با
حَ بِسِرِّهِ دَمعٌ نَمومُ

6. My eyes and heart in passion enslaved,
Who else but me is to blame?

٦. عَيني وَقَلبي في الهَوى
عَونٌ عَلَيَّ فَمَن أَلومُ

7. O you whose nature is steeped in grace,
Be generous in excusing your lover's state.

٧. يا مَن لَهُ قَدٌّ يَقو
مُ بِعُذرِ عاشِقِهِ قَويمُ

8. Though you're absent at dawn,
Within my heart you'll remain.

٨. إِن غِبتَ عَن عَيني الغَدا
ةَ فَأَنتَ في قَلبي مُقيمُ

9. You know well the ordeals I've endured,
Yet you ask about me as though oblivious.

٩. وَسَأَلتَ عَن حالي وَأَن
تَ بِما بُليتُ بِهِ عَليمُ

10. O you who reproached me at noon
As if I were a startled beast.

١٠. يا عاذِلاً في ظَهرِ نا
جِيَةٍ كَما ذُعِرَ الظَليمُ

11. Camels of Nejd, though far, yearn
For their ancient abode.

١١. أَلبانُ مِن نَجدٍ فَلي
وَجدٌ بِساكِنِهِ قَديمُ

12. Ask the tavern's songs if the old traditions
Have since changed.

١٢. وَاِسأَل مَغاني الحَيِّ بَع
دِيَ هَل تَغَيَّرَتِ الرُسومُ

13. A drink for days of sorrow,
When clouds bring sweet rain.

١٣. سَقياً لِأَيّامِ الغَمي
مِ وَمَن بَهِ طابَ الغَميمُ

14. By the gazelles' meadow I pass,
A graceful and shy herd.

١٤. وَعَلى النَقا إِمّا مَرَر
تَ بِذي النَقا ظَبِيٌ رَخيمُ

15. My heart's their pasture, while
For them are the bushes and brush.

١٥. قَلبي لَهُ مَرعىً وَلِل
ظَبيِ الكُناسَةُ وَالصَريمُ

16. Wondrous that my heart longs for them
Though its depths are unreached.

١٦. عَجَباً لَهُ يَشتاقُهُ
قَلبي وَمَسكَنُهُ الصَميمُ

17. Glorious is their charm as
The stars tilt westward in the dusk.

١٧. لِلَّهِ رَونَقُهُ وَقَد
مالَت إِلى الغَربِ النُجومُ

18. The Gemini's necklace is a precise line
In its arrangement and thread.

١٨. وَقِلادَةُ الجَوزاءُ عِق
دٌ في تَرائِبِهِ نَظيمُ

19. The meadow is burnished by dewdrops
As the gentle breeze makes it sway.

١٩. وَالرَوضُ يَصقُلُهُ النَدى
وَهناً وَيَرقُطُهُ النَسيمُ

20. The vines have now flourished
And doves are its friends.

٢٠. وَقَدِ اِنتَشى خوطُ الأَرا
كَةِ وَالحَمامُ لَهُ نَديمُ

21. Flowers smile amidst their cover
When clouds weep rains.

٢١. وَالزَهرُ يَضحَكُ في خَما
ئِلِهِ إِذا بَكَتِ الغُيومُ

22. It's the abode of kindness -
Cares never descend in its yard.

٢٢. هُوَ مَنزِلُ الإِحسانِ لا
نَزَلَت بِساحَتِهِ الهُمومُ

23. The ground is fertile, roses ever bounteous,
And the desired one sublime.

٢٣. خَضِلُ الثَرى فَالوِردُ جَم
مٌ وَالمُرادُ بِهِ جَميمُ

24. Descend unto it and you'll gain
The wish and I your guide.

٢٤. إِنزِل بِهِ تَظَفَر بِقا
صِيَةِ المُنى وَأَنا الزَعيمُ

25. O you who brightened for us the gloomed night
With the illumination of your wisdom.

٢٥. يا مَن أَضاءَ لَنا بِثا
قِبِ رَأيِهِ اللَيلُ البَهيمُ

26. For us is a shaded refuge,
A general blessing and fresh rains.

٢٦. وَلَنا مَقيلٌ بارِدٌ
في ظِلِّهِ وَنَدىً عَميمُ

27. You have set munificence as exemplar -
Even clouds learned from your charity.

٢٧. شَرَعَ السَخاءَ فَمِن مَوا
هِبِهِ تَعَلَّمَتِ الغُيومُ

28. O recent glorious one,
Noble deeds make ancient honor shine.

٢٨. المُستَجِدُّ مَآثِراً
يَزهو بِها الشَرَفُ القَديمُ

29. Lenient when fate is miserly,
Steadfast when tempers flare.

٢٩. سَمحٌ إِذا بَخِلَ الحَيا
ثَبتٌ إِذا طاشَ الحَليمُ

30. Of a folk whose nobility like perfume
Spreads as fresh aroma.

٣٠. مِن مَعشَرٍ طابَت فُرو
عُهُمُ كَما طابَ الأَرومُ

31. A people, within whom the prodded angry one Finds appeasing and deterring.
Nobility upon you, house of forgiveness -

٣١. قَومٌ إِذا غَضِبَ الغَما
مُ فَعِندَهُم رَضِيَ المُسيمُ

32. Even stars cannot rival your stature.
By the best of caravans whose winding path

٣٢. شَرَفٌ لَكُم آلَ المُظَف
فَرِ لا تُساميهِ النُجومُ

33. Was set straight by the winds.
None remain of them in crises and lands

٣٣. قَسَماً بِأَمثالِ الحَنا
يا العوجِ أَنضاها الرَسيمُ

34. Except the ancient and timeless.
They ply the sands, the winds their guide

٣٤. لَم يَبقَ مِنها في الأَزِم
مَةِ وَالبُرى إِلّا الأَديمُ

35. And passion their driving force.
Sheltered she-camels who sense no

٣٥. تَطوي الفَلا وَالشَوقُ سا
ئِقُها وَقائِدُها النَسيمُ

36. Heat or cold from the conditions.
Mecca's days escorted them, and the Revered,

٣٦. مُتَمَطِّراتٍ تَلتَوي
تَحتَ الرِحالِ وَتَستَقيمُ

37. As well as resolve and determination.
Without you, son of Muhammad,

٣٧. وَعَلى غَوارِبِها نُفو
سٌ لا تُحَسُّ لَها جُسومُ

38. No dignified one would grace this life.
Etiquette itself would be but

٣٨. ساقَتهُمُ أَيّامُ مَك
كَةَ وَالمَحارِمُ وَالحَطيمُ

39. A market of no esteem.
You enriched me when no friend or confidant

٣٩. لَولاكَ يا اِبنَ مُحَمَّدٍ
لَم يُلفَ في الدُنيا كَريمُ

40. Could provide warmth or solace.
I gained the triumph of my argument

٤٠. وَلَأَضحَتِ الآدابُ في
ها وَهيَ سوقٌ لا تَقومُ

41. Though all humankind protested.
May one of stern features but heart most kind

٤١. أَغنَيتَ عَنّي حَيثُ لا
يُغني الشَقيقُ أَوِ الحَميمُ

42. Sacrifice himself for you.
The rain of his gifts is abundant,

٤٢. حَتّى عَلَوتُ بِحُجَّتي
وَالناسُ كُلُّهُمُ خُصومُ

43. Wide and free his shelter.
His sky is never devoid of benevolence,

٤٣. يَفديكَ فَظٌ لا يُجا
وِرُ صَدرَهُ قَلبٌ رَحيمُ

44. Nor does it bode ill.
The birds of hope circle his banquets,

٤٤. نَزرُ العَطايا ماؤُهُ
وَشلٌ وَمَربَعُهُ وَخيمُ

45. Welcomed and soaring overhead.
His coins are flawless, though

٤٥. لا يَستَهِلُّ سَماؤُهُ
بِالمَكرُماتِ وَلا تَغيمُ

46. His honor is truly sublime.
This is my brother's praise, sincere and plain,

٤٦. طَيرُ الرَجاءِ عَلى مَوا
ئِدِهِ مُحَلَّأَةً تَحومُ

47. His affection is sheer and untainted.
For the sky of your glory there are stars,

٤٧. سَلِمَت دَراهِمُهُ وَلَ
كِن عِرضُهُ عِرضٌ سَقيمُ

48. And for those who oppose you, meteorites.

٤٨. هَذا ثَناءُ أَخي وَلا
ءٍ وَدُّهُ مَحضٌ سَليمُ

٤٩. لِسَماءِ مَجدِكَ أَنجُمٌ
وَلِمَن يُعاديها رُجومُ
