1. Let not the crowds that flock to you annoy,
Nor what you generously expend destroy.
١. فَلا يُضجِرَنكَ اِزدِحامُ الوُفودِ
عَلَيكَ وَكَثرَةُ ما تَبذُلُ
2. For in these times so few like you remain
To give, or with an open hand sustain.
٢. فَإِنَّكَ في زَمَنٍ لَيسَ فيهِ
جَوادٌ سِواكَ وَلا مُفضِلُ
3. Munificent men are few and far between,
While indigent and needy throngs are seen.
٣. وَقَد قَلَّ في أَهلِهِ المُنعِمونَ
وَقَد كَثُرَ البائِسُ المُرمِلُ
4. None but yourself is looked to for relief,
On none but you is cast the shame of grief.
٤. وَما فيهِ غَيرُكَ مَن يُستَماحُ
وَما فيهِ إِلّاكَ مَن يُسأَلُ
