1. She has desisted, so forgive her transgression, O noble ones,
And the vicissitudes of fate have come to you pleading her case.

2. In her drunkenness she misspoke, so pardon her,
With your sublime dreams, the errors brought on by intoxication.

3. And act according to your custom of forgiveness, in which
The predecessors set a noble example for you to follow.

4. Her offense was against herself, not you,
And the harm was among her children, not yours.

5. It struck you during times of plenty, which were being
Reserved for the needy or hopeful youth.

6. Thus disasters do not threaten anyone
Except those destined for misfortune.

7. There was indeed loss, yet it was a gift,
For the money was safe while the brave lad was sacrificed.

8. So whenever fate snatches something from your palms,
O Time, it is negligible next to what you have left us.

9. I see victory looming, so sense its tribulations,
For triumph comes to those who endure.

10. This is a morn whose rising sun
Will later shine, and the rain trailing it will pour.

11. The cloud of that evil has lifted from us
And the embers of that flame have turned to ashes.

12. The wisdom of the Commander of the Faithful will help you
In every impending, grave concern or burden.

13. Every past weakness has a successor to rectify it,
And all disgrace meets its repairer.

14. You, Family of the Victorious, are the land’s vitality,
Your dew revives it while drought smolders.

15. From your storied past came revelations and surahs,
And through you humankind learned nobleness and generosity.

16. A people who with their views illuminate
Every hopeful cause, dispelling the darkness of distress.

17. They raced to be first in munificence and won,
Their glowing moons equal, their full moons a match.

18. Lions when united, yet moons when they travel,
Boasting not of lofty rule, though kingdoms boast of them.

19. When the earth trembles, their faces are
Our meadows, their hands our gardens and streamlets.

20. With their moist springs they light fires in homes
And kindle the moon over the lands.

21. Their openhandedness makes them more inclined to pardon,
So forbearing were they when able to punish.

22. When the veil of glory dropped from the office of vizier,
And it lost the companionship of that radiant moon.

23. None on earth would it find worthy of obedience and order
Save you, so it has no recourse apart from your management.

24. Some foolishly aspired to this office,
Too incompetent and unable to attain it.

25. Tell them: Shun its path, for when
Thoroughbreds race, donkeys cannot compete.

26. Make way, leave the arena of glory,
Vacate the lions’ abode, which oxen cannot occupy.

27. War needs men known for it,
And rule, others than you.

28. Precedence belongs to racers, and only
Stallions pay the tithe, not the infertile mule.

29. Through you alone faith has a guardian to champion it
When oppressed and avenge it when wronged.

30. Without a keen helmsman from you, power would wander
Astray, a prize for roving beasts.

31. It has reached you while opponents bewailed their arms,
With no claws to show or talons to display.

32. Enjoy life’s bounty and live long, Pillar of Faith,
As none have attained the ease you enjoy.

33. In people’s eyes your achievements are praised, though many
Have ruled but left no legacy.

34. Those grateful to you for your peace extol your rest
As they praised the rain once the flowers bloomed.

35. A king towards whom the hopes of the destitute gravitate,
And throngs gather before his doors.

36. Bashfulness flows from his face; from his youthful form
The waters of munificence can be squeezed.

37. Lions revere him, the sun and rain envy
His cheerful disposition and radiant grace.

38. A flaming brand against enemies, the clouds
Overflowing with goodness to the prosperous.

39. O you who make life pleasant while we are your partisans!
Days are wholesome during your prosperous reign.

40. This is a foal guided by luck; its star ascending,
Resembling the rosebud in soothing breasts.

41. May your lands remain prosperous, your soul gratified
By the meadows and maidens ever greeting you.

42. Fate proceeds as you wish, fortune accompanies
All you do or refrain from doing.

43. Delighting in your radiant sons, stars shine
In the heavens of your glory for them.

44. Until in the order of faith, you clearly see
What the Hashimites beheld from the exalted heavens.

45. O people so formidable when angry
That the world yields to them submissively when they command!

46. Tell Time to turn its fortunes my way
And reveal its days that have betrayed me.

47. Or restrain its discord from me; perhaps
Its afflictions will cease and desist because of you.

48. Why do I watch as days slip by,
Diverting the favors of fate from me, while I wait?

49. How many nights has wakefulness severed
With sorrows! Neither dawn shining nor darkness lifting.

50. It is not yet time for daylight to emerge
When will slumber finally delight my eyes?

51. Secrets lasted until I thought the night forgot
To pass the moon around in its resting place.

52. May I never lack your gifts nor your listening
To my poor poetry and scattered rhymes.

53. May I not stand at any door but yours,
Hopeful for aid from none but your munificence.

54. My praise of you is beyond reproach,
Pure in you, by no blemish marred.

55. It is poetry, but studied closely, wisdom,
Rhymed, yet its meaning polished pearls.
