1. If your heart were like mine, so captivated,

١. لَو أَنَّ قَلبَكِ مِثلُ قَلبي مُغرَمٌ

2. But your youth obeyed the blamers so you obeyed them,
Great is the difference between an arid heart and one downcast.

٢. لَكِن عَدَتكِ صَبابَتي فَأَطَعتِهِم
شَتّانَ خالٍ قَلبُهُ وَمُتَيَّمُ

3. Return to me, ailing, that I may heal you
Cure me, for you know well what I endure.

٣. عودي مَريضاً في يَدَيكَ شِفاؤُهُ
إِشفي وَأَنتِ بِما يُكابِدُ أَعلَمُ

4. Or end the malady of desire outright,
If your desire be of those that can be ended.

٤. أَو فَاِحسِمي شَكواهُ مِن داءِ الهَوى
إِن كانَ داءُ هَواكِ مِمّا يُحسَمُ

5. Seldom has a patient found a cure
When his healer is himself diseased.

٥. وَلَقَلَّما وَجَدَ المَريضُ لِدائِهِ
بُرءاً إِذا كانَ الطَبيبَ المُسقِمُ

6. Behind what appears to your eye of my sadness
Lies anguish concealed deep in my ribs.

٦. وَوَراءَ ما يَبدو لِعَينِكِ مِن ضَنىً
وَجَدٌ بِأَثناءِ الضُلوعِ مُكَتَّمُ

7. If awake you greet me coldly out of spite
Have dreams pass by me in sleep and bid me peace,

٧. إِن كُنتِ يَقظى بِالسَلامِ بِخَيلَةً
فَمُري الخَيالَ يَمُرُّ بي فَيُسَلِّمُ

8. And promise trysts with me in dreams—perhaps
My languishing eyes will hope and wish to see you.

٨. وَعِدي بِوَصلِكِ في المَنامِ لَعَلَّها
تَرجو لِقاءَكَ مُقلَتي فَتَهَوَّمُ

9. You turned from my white hair though it was your doing.
My soul is sacrifice for one who commits crime!

٩. أَعرَضتِ عَن شَيبي وَأَنتِ جَنَيتِهِ
نَفسي الفِداءُ لِمُجرِمٍ يَتَجَرَّمُ

10. Either you see me kneeling, though long have I
Galloped to prove myself in lands and blame myself.

١٠. إِمّا تَرَيني جاثِماً فَلَطالَما
رَكَّضتُ أُنجِدُ في البِلادِ وَأُتهِمُ

11. I dragged the train of my youth and my vigour,
And guided my steed though tiring I did not.

١١. وَجَرَرتُ ذَيلَ شَبيبَتي وَخَلاعَتي
وَأَسَمتُ خَيلَ بِطالَتي لا أَسأَمُ

12. So today my needs and wishes—
Grim-faced after adventures—are blocked.

١٢. فَاليَومَ وَجهُ مَطالِبي وَمَآرِبي
بَعدَ الطَلاقَةِ عابِسٌ مُتَجَهِّمُ

13. Their prospects have closed against me, so beyond
What I hope from them lies a door barred.

١٣. سُدَّت مَطالِعُها عَلَيَّ فَدونَ ما
أَرجوهُ مِنها بابُ يَأسٍ مُردَمُ

14. If events have set me back though I have not ceased to excel in merit and special traits,
Fate is ungrateful, delaying superior qualities, a passionate lover.

١٤. وَلَئِن رَمَينَني الخُطوبُ بِمُقصِدٍ
مِن صَرفِهِنَّ فلِلنَوائِبِ أَسهُمُ

15. A fate that cast me into a narrow corner,
My day in it all gloom and my night without end.

١٥. أَو أَخَّرَتني الحادِثاتُ وَلَم أَزَل
بِفَضائِلي وَخَصائِصي أَتَقَدَّمُ

16. My night like the night of one malignant,
To anxiety and desolation I am resigned.

١٦. فَالدَهرُ لا شُكِرَت مَساعيهِ بِتَأ
خيرِ الفَضائِلِ مُستَهامٌ مُغرَمُ

17. Bearing the loss of my gracious plenty, if not for
The age and its betrayal, I would not lose heart.

١٧. دَهرٌ رَماني في قَرارَةِ مَنزِلٍ
ضَنكٍ نَهاري فيهِ لَيلٌ مُعتِمُ

18. So when will anxiety dismounting my threshold
Weigh on me with encampments that gather?

١٨. لَيلي بِهِ لَيلُ السَليمِ وَإِنَّني
لِلهَمِّ وَالبُرَحاءِ فيهِ لَمُسلَمُ

19. As for me, O my age, if your afflictions trample
My back in injustice, I under darkness complain!

١٩. مُتَهَضِّماً فَضلي الأَبِيُّ وَلَم يَكُن
لَولا الزَمانُ وَغَدرُهُ يَتَهَضَّمُ

20. Never, one who upholds a mighty affair
Feels weighed down when the greatest imam is his supporter.

٢٠. فَمَتى يُقَوِضُ راحِلاً عَن ساحَتي
هَمٌّ عَلَيَّ بِما يَنوءُ مُخَيِّمُ

21. The helper, the victorious, his armies
Devour enemy legions, stern, unyielding.

٢١. أَنا يا زَماني إِن تَطَأ مِن مَنكِبي
ضَرَعاً لِظُلمي مِن خُطوبِكَ أَظلَمُ

22. The angels of heaven are his auxiliaries
So flanked by them he fights, by fate distinguished.

٢٢. هَيهاتَ لا يَعبا بِحَملِ عَظيمَةٍ
مَن كانَ ناصِرَهُ الإِمامُ الأَعظَمُ

23. Bowing in awe, swiftly to the charge,
From prohibitions reverently refraining.

٢٣. الناصِرُ المَنصورُ جَيشُ لِوائِهِ
وَمَعاطِسُ الأَعداءِ جُدعٌ رُغَّمُ

24. He disdains donning iron through boldness
As if wearing iron were an inviolable sin.

٢٤. نَصَرَتهُ أَملاكُ السَماءِ فَمُردِفٌ
مِنهُم يُقاتِلُ دونَهُ وَمُسَوَّمُ

25. Accustomed is he to the blows of blades, a deafening
Roar, a nude Indian blade, a piercing point.

٢٥. الخاشِعُ الأَوّابُ يُقدِمُ حاسِراً
في الرَوعِ وَهوَ عَنِ المَحارِمِ مُحجِمُ

26. An opinion that defeats armies though they are iron walls
And a charge that repels a host, though fully armed.

٢٦. لا يَرتَضي لُبسَ الحَديدِ بَسالَةً
فَكَأَنَّهُ لُبسُ الحَديدِ مُحَرَّمُ

27. He prays the fires of affliction to roast the enemies’ faces,
Its blaze scorching, leaping, crackling.

٢٧. فَعَتادُهُ عَضبُ المَضارِبِ باتِرٌ
وَأَصَمُّ عَسّالٌ وَأَجرَدُ شَيظَمُ

28. He unleashes on them clouds like pigeons, their thunder
A rumbling roar, their lightning bolts, blood.

٢٨. رَأيٌ يَفُلُّ البيضَ وَهيَ حَدائِدٌ
وَسُطىً تَرُدُّ الجَيشَ وَهوَ عَرَمرَمُ

29. So their time with him is a night of fear
Fearsome night or glowering, calamitous day.

٢٩. يُصلي الأَعادي نارَ كُلِّ كَريهَةٍ
يَشوي الوُجوهَ حَريقُها المُتَضَرِّمُ

30. The shining blades are sheathed in skulls
And the Indian sword sheathed in ribs made straight.

٣٠. يُزجي لَهُم سُحبَ الحِمامِ رُعودُها
زَجَلُ الكُماةِ وَصَوبُ عارِضِها الدَمُ

31. He inherited prophecy as his pulpit and the caliphate as his succession
And piety so upon him is the marking of the three distinctions.

٣١. فَزَمانُهُم بِالرُعبِ مِنهُ لَيلَةٌ
لَيلاءُ أَو يَومٌ عَبوسٌ أَيوَمُ

32. A cloak, sword that does not fail, signet ring—
Adorned, accoutred, and ringed.

٣٢. فَالبيضُ تُغمَدُ في المَفارِقِ وَالطُلى
وَالسَمهَرِيَّةُ في الضُلوعِ تُقَوَّمُ

33. A king whose justice and munificence leaves no
Oppressed soul on his two days, no destroyer.

٣٣. وَرِثَ النُبوَّةَ مِنبَراً وَخِلافَةً
وَتَقِيَّةً فَعَلَيهِ مِنها ميسَمُ

34. His open hand extends prosperity
As his trenchant blade dispels injustice.

٣٤. فَلِمَنكِبٍ وَلِعاتِقٍ وَلِخِنصِرٍ
مِنهُ ثَلاثٌ قَدرُهُنَّ مُعَظَّمُ

35. Vigilant, his gaze tends the subjects—
While they sleep in beds, he keeps awake.

٣٥. بُردٌ وَسَيفٌ لا يُفَلُّ وَخاتِمٌ
فَمُحَلبَبٌ وَمُقَلَّدٌ وَمُخَتَّمُ

36. His palm brings skills to fruition and his fingers
Quench the flames of events—he closes and stitches.

٣٦. مَلِكٌ لَهُ عَدلٌ وَجودٌ يَعدَمُ ال
مَظلومُ في يَوميهِما وَالمُعدِمُ

37. O son of the imams and the guides, the one whose
Lineage the noble debris and sacred wellspring grace!

٣٧. فَالرِفدُ تَبسُطُهُ يَدٌ مَبسوطَةٌ
وَالجَورُ يَحسِمُهُ حُسامٌ مِحذَمُ

38. No ancient glory was recorded
But their enduring glory is more ancient.

٣٨. مُتَيَقِّظٌ يَرعى الرَعايا طَرفُهُ
وَهُمُ رُقودٌ في المَضاجِعِ نُوَّمُ

39. The House of Messengers—may prayers be upon them
And praise—prayers begin and end with their mention.

٣٩. القائِدُ الغُلبَ الكُماةَ عَوابِساً
وَالبيضُ في أَيمانِهِم تَتَبَسَّمُ

40. They are people the angels descend upon their homes
And the sent one Ahmad is of them.

٤٠. مِن غِلمَةٍ بِجَمالِهِم نارُ الهَوى
وَبِبَأسِهِم نارُ الوَغى تَتَضَرَّمُ

41. Through loyalty to them the intercession of a believer is granted
And through love of them a sinner hopes for absolution.

٤١. سِيّانِ سِلمُهُمُ وَحَربُهُمُ فَما
يَنفَكُّ يَقطُرُ مِن أَكُفِّهِمُ الدَمُ

42. Through their guidance error is known from guidance
And through their superiority the perfect book was revealed.

٤٢. تُركٌ إِذا لَبِسوا التَرائِكَ أَيقَنَت
صُمُّ العَوالي أَنَّها سَتُحَطَّمُ

43. From the light of their faces on resurrection day
Hell will seek refuge when they pass by.

٤٣. يَزدادُ إِشراقاً ضِياءُ وُجوهِهِم
وَالجَوُّ بِالهَبَواتِ أَربَدُ أَقتَمُ

44. By you, O Abu Al-Abbas Ahmad, Ahmad! Time of wrongdoing
Though indeed it is condemned.

٤٤. فَهُمُ إِذا حَسَروا ظَباءُ خَميلَةٍ
وَهُمُ أُسودُ شَرى إِذا ما اِستَلأَموا

45. So entrust the Commander of the Faithful, for through you
From fears we are safe if you are unharmed!

٤٥. رَكِبوا الدَياجي وَالسُروجُ أَهِلَّةٌ
وَهُمُ بُدورٌ وَالأَسِنَّةُ أَنجُمُ

46. And listen to it with presence of mind, Bedouin wisdom
Of ancestry whose origins were not known.

٤٦. فَكَأَنَّ إيماضَ السُيوفِ بَوارِقٌ
وَعَجاجَ خَيلِهِمُ سَحابٌ مُظلِمُ

47. It went not beyond the superficiality of Iraq though it
Speaks in the tongue of an eloquent member of Tay.

٤٧. مِن كُلِّ رَيّانِ المَعاطِفِ خَصرُهُ
كَمُحِبِّهِ مِن رِدفِهِ يَتَظَلَّمُ

48. In your praise it became stars in the sky of glory
By which the devils of enmity are stoned.

٤٨. في ثَنيِ بُردَتِهِ قَضيبُ نَقىً فَفي
الدِرعِ المُفاضَةِ مِنهُ طَودٌ أَيهَمُ

49. Choice Arabic prose it borrows discernment
And eloquence from—the crude foreigner its aid!

٤٩. بَشَرٌ أَرَقُّ مِنَ الزُلالِ وَتَحتَهُ
كَالصَخرِ قَلبٌ لا يَرِقُّ فَيَرحَمُ

50. It flows so rouses in the robes an intoxication—
Its reciter, so enraptured, sings its rhythm.

٥٠. يُصمي الخَلِيَّ بِطَرفِهِ وَبِكَفِّهِ
يُصمي الكَمِيَّ فَجُؤذَرٌ أَم ضيغَمُ

51. It mixed fervour with gentle birth—say to it:
“Ancestors of wine in your cup or blood?”

٥١. هُوَ تارَةً لِلحُسنِ في أَترابِهِ
عَلَمٌ وَطَوراً في الكَتيبَةِ مُعلَمُ

52. None praised the caliphs before with its like,
Not in what we传 on al-Walid and Muslim.

٥٢. لَحظٌ عَلى نَهبِ القُلوبِ مُسَلَّطٌ
وَغِرارُ نَصلٍ في الرِقابِ مُحَكَّمُ

53. I would have it judge the Hakami had I power over him,
But one to arbitrate between us has proven elusive.

٥٣. عَزَماتُ مَنصورِ السَرايا هَمُّهُ
في نُصرَةٍ الدينِ الحَنيفِ مُقَسَّمُ

54. It serves you in holy seasons—not one without it
Nor without the shade of your kingdom a holy season.

٥٤. قَرمٌ بِأَعباءِ الخِلافَةِ ناهِضٌ
صَبٌّ بِتَدبيرِ المَمالِكِ قَيِّمُ

55. I am roused by it though between us kinship lies broken,
The pleasing rubble, sacred waters, and my song.

٥٥. قَرمٌ يَومَ النَدى لِعُفاتِهِ
كَرَماً وَفي وَجهِ الزَمانِ تَجَهُّمُ

٥٦. مُتَبَسِّمٌ يَومَ النَدى لِعُفاتِهِ
كَرَماً وَفي وَجهِ الزَمانِ تَجَهُّمُ

٥٧. يَغشى الطِعانَ فَلا يُراعُ جَنانُهُ
وَيَجودُ بِالدُنيا فَلا يَتَنَدَّمُ

٥٨. تُسدي الصَنائِعَ كَفُّهُ وَتَشِبُّ ن
يرانُ الوَقائِعِ فَهوَ مُسدٍ مُلحِمُ

٥٩. يا اِبنَ الأَئِمَّةِ وَالهُداةِ وَمَن إِلى
أَحسابِهِم يُنمى الحَطيمُ وَزَمزَمُ

٦٠. ما عُدَّ مَجدٌ أَوَّلٌ مُتَقادِمٌ
إِلّا وَمَجدُهُمُ المُؤَثَّلُ أَقدَمُ

٦١. آلُ الرِسالَةِ بِالصَلَوةِ عَلَيهِمُ
وَالحَمدِ يُفتَتَحُ الصَلَوَةُ وَتُختَمُ

٦٢. قَومٌ عَلى أَبياتِهِم تَتَنَزَّلُ ال
أَملاكُ وَالمَبعوثُ أَحمَدُ مِنهُمُ

٦٣. بَوَلائِهِم يُعطى الوَسيلَةَ مُؤمِنٌ
وَبِحُبِّهِم يَرجو الشَفاعَةَ مُجرِمُ

٦٤. وَبِهَديِهِم عُرِفَ الضَلالُ مِنَ الهُدى
وَبِفَضلِهِم نَزَلَ الكِتابُ المُحكَمُ

٦٥. مِن نورِ أَوجُهِهِم إِذا مَرّوا بِها
يَومَ القِيامَةِ تَستَعيذُ جَهَنَّمُ

٦٦. بِكَ يا أَبا العَبّاسِ أَحمَدَ أَحمَدَ ال
زَمَنُ المُسيءُ وَإِنَّهُ لَمُذَمَّمُ

٦٧. فَاِسلَم أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ فَإِنَّنا
بِكَ ما سَلِمتَ مِنَ المَخاوِفِ نَسلَمُ

٦٨. وَاِنصِت لَها حَضَرِيَّةً بَدَوِيَّةَ ال
أَنسابِ لَم يُفتَح بِشَرواها فَمُ

٦٩. ما جاوَزَت زَيفَ العِراقِ وَإِنَّها
بِلِسانِ حاضِرِ طَيِّءٍ تَتَكَلَّمُ

٧٠. مِدَحاً غَدَت لِسَماءِ مَجدِكَ أَنجُماً
فَبِها شَياطينُ العَداوَةِ تُرجَمُ

٧١. عُرباً فِصاحاً يَستَعيرُ فَطانَةً
وَفَصاحَةً مِنها البَليدُ الأَعجَمُ

٧٢. تُروى فَتُحدِثُ في المَعاطِفِ نَشوَةً
فَمُديرُها طَرَباً بِها يَتَرَنَّمُ

٧٣. خَلَطَ الحَماسَةَ بِالنَسيبِ فَقُل لَهُ
أَسلافُ خَمرٍ في كُؤوسِكَ أَم دَمُ

٧٤. لَم يَمدَحِ الخُلَفاءَ قَبلُ بِمِثلِها
فيما رَوَيناهُ الوَلَيدِ وَمُسلِمُ

٧٥. أُشجي بِها الحَكَمِيَّ لَو حاكَمتُهُ
لَكِن تَعَذَّرَ بَينَنا مَن يَحكُمُ

٧٦. خَدَمُ تَزورُكَ في المَواسِمِ لا خَلا
مِنها وَلا مِن ظِلِّ مُلكِكَ مَوسِمُ
