What is with your ignorance after wisdom and religion
يا أيها الرجل المرخي عمامته
O you who let down his turban,
قد غلبتني رواة الناس كلهم
The tribesmen have conquered me, all of them
لم أر مثلك يا أمام خليلا
I have not seen the like of you, O Imam Khalil
لقد علقت يمينك قرن ثور
Your right hand has grasped the horn of a bull
أبلغ رياحا مردها وكهولها
Send word to those friends whose affections found me too hard to retain,
سب الفرزدق من حنيفة سابقا
Al-Farazdaq insulted Hani'ah's messenger
باع أباه المستنير وأمه
The enlightened one sold his father and mother
ألا حي المنازل والخياما
O dweller of encampments and abodes
جاءت بنو نمر كأن عيونهم
The sons of Namir came, their eyes
لمن الديار كأنها لم تحلل
For whom are the abodes as if they were not inhabited
أجد اليوم جيرتك ارتحالا
Today your neighbor departed on a journey
ألا حي دار الهاجرية بالزرق
O dweller of the blue abode of migrant birds, love it
ألا حي أهل الجوف قبل العوائق
Oh lively people of the insides before obstacles
أكلفت تصعيد الحدوج الروافع
You were tasked with building high walls
قد كان في ماءتي شاة تعزبها
Once there were two hundred sheep that grazed
إن تضرساني تجدا مضرسا
If you try to harm me, you'll find me already harmed
حيوا المقام وحيوا ساكن الدار
Greet the abode and greet the dweller therein
يا صاحبي هل الصباح منير
My friend, is the morning bright
صرم الخليط تباينا وبكورا
The mixed tribes differ in their origins and dawns
هاج الهوى وضمير الحاجة الذكر
Desire stirred and memory reminded
سقيا لنهي حمامة وحفير
Watering the urge of a dove and its mate
لعل فراق الحي للبين عامدي
Perhaps parting from friends to the estranged was my purpose
هل ينفعنك إن جربت تجريب
Will trying benefit you, though old age comes
ألا حي المنازل بالجناب
Oh you who reside in encampments, near at hand,
ألا حي رهبى ثم حي المطاليا
Awake, awake! Behold my Lord then my companions
طربت وما هذا الصبا والتكالف
You were troubled, yet this youth and pretentiousness -
سرت الهموم فبتن غير نيام
Worries crept in, so I couldn't sleep,
أما أسيد والهجيم ومازن
As for Ausaid, al-Hujaim, and Mazin -
تغطي نمير بالعمائم لؤمها
Numayr covers its defects with turbans
متى تغمز ذراع مجاشعي
When you pinch an emaciated one's arm
هل رام أم لم يرم ذو السدر فالثلم
Whether the possessor of the jujube tried or not
أصبح حبل وصلكم رماما
The bond of your alliance has become weak
كاد مجيب الخبث تلقى يمينه
The mischievous answerer nearly met his demise,
منا فتى الفتيان والجود معقل
From us a youth among youths, a fortress of generosity
لقد نادى أميرك باحتمال
Your prince called for endurance
لنعم الفتى والخيل تنحط في القنا
How excellent the youth and the horses that descend into the hollows
شبهت والقوم دوين العرق
I likened them, while the people buzzed with sweat,
سيروا فرب مسبحين وقائل
Journey on, though many a praiser cry
إذا أولى النجوم بدت فغارت
When the stars first appeared and then hid away,
ذكرت وصال البيض والشيب شائع
I recalled the union of white hair and gray hair prevalent,
يزين أيام ابن أروى فعاله
The deeds of Ibn Arwa's son adorn his days
أبا العوف إن الشول ينقع رسلها
O Abul Awfa, though the wounds inflicted by spears may heal
أدار الجميع الصالحين أبيني
My friend, show me the way
أواصل أنت أم العمرو أم تدع
Are you still my life's desire, or have you ceased?
ولقد رحلت إليكم عيدية
I came to you as a feast-day visitor
ما ذات أرواق تصدى لجؤذر
What galleries that faced a torrent
ما هاج شوقك من رسوم ديار
What longing of yours is stirred by the traces of settlements
حي الهدملة من ذات المواعيس
Revive the ruins from the abode of owl-cries
ألا بكرت سلمى فجد بكورها
Alas! Early dawned Salma, so her energetic one hastened at dawn,
تعللنا أمامة بالعدات
Amat allails us for weapons
أزرت ديار الحي أم لا تزورها
Have you visited the abodes of the living or do you not visit them?
قل للديار سقى أطلالك المطر
Tell the dwellings rain has watered your ruins,
ما بال نومك بالفراش غرارا
Why do you sleep so soundly in bed
نعوا عبد العزيز فقلت هذا
They mourned Abd al-Aziz, so I said: this
أهاج الشوق معرفة الديار
Longing stirred by knowing the abodes
خليلي كم من زفرة قد رددتها
My friend how many a moan have I stifled
ألا زارت وأهل منى هجود
Alas, they came and the dwellers of Miná bowed down,
قد غير الحي بعد الحي إقفار
The abandoned places after the past living
إن المهاجر حين يبسط كفه
When the emigrant extends his hand,
حي المنازل بالأجزاع غيرها
The dwellings with strong pillars time has changed,
إذا ما بت بالربعي ليلا
When the night found me stopping at a camp
ألا ينهى بنو صرد رياحا
Alas! Do not the sons of Surad restrain the winds?
لولا الحياء لعادني استعبار
Had it not been for shame, longing would have returned me,
تضج ربداء من الخطاب
The desert's belly rumbles speeches
أقلي اللوم عاذل والعتابا
Blame me less, O reproacher, and cease your blaming,
تكلفني معيشة آل زيد
The burdens of providing for Zayd's family fall on me
يا طعم يا ابن قريط إن بيعكم
O Tu'mah son of Qurayt, your trade
طرب الحمام بذي الأراك فهاجني
The doves cooed by Dhi al-Arak, so it stirred me,
من ذا نحمل حاجة نزلت بنا
Who can we blame for this misfortune that has befallen us,
أليس فوارس الحصبات منا
Are not the horsemen of the stony plains of us
أعاذل ما بالي أرى الحي ودعوا
I blame not what has befallen me, I see the beloved bid farewell
عجبت لهاذا الزائر المترقب
I wondered at this visitor watching
لعمري لئن خلى جبير مكانه
By my life, if Jubair leaves his place
أتبيت ليلك يا ابن أتأة نائما
Do I spend the night asleep, O son of Umm Amat,
لا خير في مستعجلات الملاوم
There is no good in hastily made friendships,
أمسيت إذ رحل الشباب حزينا
I became sad when youth departed
عرين من عرينة ليس منا
A den from Urayna is not one of ours
ويلكم يا قصبات الجوفان
Woe to you, O hollow reeds
أزادا سوى يحيى تريد وصاحبا
You wish for a companion other than Yahya
أدار الجميع الصالحين بذي السدر
With his fair-foliaged lote-tree he brought round all good men,
طرقت لميس وليتها لم تطرق
Lamees knocked, I wish she hadn't knocked
ليس زمان بالكميتين راجعاً
The times of glory won't come back again,
ألا حي ربع المنزل المتقادم
Alas, greet the quarters of the advancing abode
أتنسى دارتي هضبات غول
Do you forget my homeland, plateaus of Ghawl,
زار الفرزدق أهل الحجاز
Al-Farazdaq visited the people of Hijaz
لقد كان ظني يا ابن سعد سعادة
Indeed I thought, O Ibn Sa'd, it would bring me joy,
إني امرؤ يبني لي المجد البان
I am a man who builds glory upon glory,
يقول ذوو الحكومة من قريش
The rulers from Quraysh say,
انظر خليلي بأعلى ثرمداء ضحى
Look, my friend, at the summit of Tharmada in the morning glow,
أتنسى يوم حومل والدخول
Do you forget the day of departure and entering,
إذا ذكرت زيدا ترقرق دمعها
When she recalls Zayd, her tears flow
عشية أعلى مذنب الجوف قادني
At dusk, enticed by wavering comet-tail,
قولي لهم يا عبل قد خاب قينكم
Tell them, O Abla, their jealousy has failed,
لا تحسبي سباسب العراق
Do not suppose the pleasure palaces of Iraq
عفا ذو حمام بعدنا وحفير
The dove cooed after we left, and the grouse
بان الخليط فودعوا بسواد
The mixture has cleared, so they bid farewell with gloom
أتعرف أم أنكرت أطلال دمنة
Do you recognize or deny the ruins of Dimna
ما بال شرب بني الدلنطى ثابتا
What is with the drinking of the people of Dalanta, steadfast
كأن نقيق الحب في حاويائه
Like the hissing of love in its vessel
بت أرائي صاحبي تجلدا
I give my friend advice though he is stubborn
إن الفرزدق أخزته مثالبه
Al-Farazdaq has been disgraced by his own misdeeds
ما أرضى بنصح بني كليب
I am not pleased with the advice of the tribe of Kulayb,
أجد رواح القوم أم لا تروح
Do the souls of the people find comfort or do they not find solace?
ألمت وما رفقت بأن تلومي
You blamed me, yet were not gentle in blaming
قال الأمير لعبد تيم بئس ما
The prince said to the slave of Taim
بكر الأمير لغربة وتنائي
The prince wept for estrangement and separation
إليك كلفنا كل يوم هجيرة
To you we entrust every day of migration
ما للفرزدق من عز يلوذ به
Al-Farazdaq has no glory to take refuge in
ألا يال قوم من ملامة عيثم
Oh tribe that reproaches a land devastated by ruin
ألا إنما شن حمار وأعنز
Alas! Only the braying of a donkey and bleating of a sheep
بان الخليط ولو طوعت ما بانا
The mixture became clear even if I were bent, it would not become clear
من شاء بايعته مالي وخلعته
Whoever I wish, I give him my wealth and robe
قد قرب الحي إذ هاجوا لإصعاد
When their rage rose to storm the ascent,
عفا النسران بعدك والوحيد
The eagles have forgiven you after your absence, while the lonely one has nothing new left for his grandmother.
لقد ولدت غسان ثالبة الشوى
Ghassan was born of Thalibah, her hearth ablaze,
عيت تميم بأمر كان أفظعها
The tribe of Tamim was faced with a terrible affair
تلاقي في الولاء عليك سعدا
In loyalty to you I find joy
هنيئا مريئا غير داء مخامر
Welcome, pure and free from infecting disease,
مسلم جرار الجيوش إلى العدى
Muslim, commander of armies against the enemy
شتمتما قائلا بالحق مهتديا
I insulted saying the truth, guided,
أتطرب حين لاح بك المشيب
I'm disturbed when old age appears in you,
تنعى النعاة أمير المؤمنين لنا
The mourners mourn to us the Commander of the Faithful
عرفت ببرقة الوداء رسما
I knew by the radiance of love a fine shape
ودع أمامة حان منك رحيل
Bid farewell to Ummama, for it is time for you to depart
حي الديار بعاقل فالأنعم
The abodes prosper with a wise one, so be prosperous
ما هاج شوقك من عهود رسوم
What longing of yours was stirred by the customs of old
ألم يك لا أبا لك شتم تيم
Was it not enough that you insulted Taim,
حيوا الديار وأهلها بسلام
Greet the homes and their people with peace
لو كنت حرا يوم أعين لم تنم
Had you been free when eyes could not sleep,
ما علم الأقوام أسرق منكم
The people know not that none steals like you
ألا رب يوم قد أتيح لك الصبا
Alas how often a day whose beginning
جديلة والغوث الذين تعيبهم
Jadilah and al-Gauth, whom the generous fault
سقى الأجراع فوق بني شبيل
He watered the camels above Bani Shubail,
أبني أسيدة قد وجدت لمازن
O sons of Usaydah, I have found that the tribe of Mazin
سيبكي صدا في قبر سلمى ابن جندل
Sad will cry in the tomb of Salma son of Jundal
لمن الديار رسومهن خوالي
For whom are their dwellings now deserted?
حي الغداة برامة الأطلالا
In the early dawn, I recalled the ruins of Brammah
قالوا نصيبك من أجر فقلت لهم
They said your share of reward, so I said to them
جزيت الطيبات أخا لقوم
You were rewarded with blessings, O brother of a people
إذا كنت بالوعساء من كفة الغضا
When you are of the bleary-eyed from the scale of gloom
لله در عصابة نجدية
Praise be to a Najdi band
أتجعل يا ابن القين أولاد دارم
Do you make the sons of Darim, O son of Qayn,
أقمنا وربتنا الديار ولا أرى
We settled, though homesickness overwhelmed,
لست بذي دحس ولا تعريض
I do not scheme or hint at things
بان الخليط غداة الجناب
The mixture appeared after purification
أنتم فررتم يوم عدوة مازن
You fled the day of the battle of Mazin
إليك إليك يا جعد بن قيس
To you, to you O Ja'd son of Qais
يا عين جودي بدمع هاجه الذكر
O eye, shed copious tears in memory
لجت أمامة في لومي وما علمت
Ummama rebuked me for blaming her, though she knows not
أهاج البرق ليلة أذرعات
The lightning raged on a night of downpours
عفا نهيا حمامة فالجواء
The dove cooed gently, yet discord arose
إذا أعرضوا ألفين منها تعرضت
When they turned away two thousand strong, I stood my ground
ألا ليت شعري ما البحيرة فاعل
Alas! I wonder what the sea is doing
إن الندى من بني ذبيان قد علموا
The glory of the clan of Dhubyan is known
لقد سرني أن لا تعد مجاشع
I am glad that you do not count as valorous
ألم يكن في وسوم قد وسمت بها
Did you not bear the marks with which I branded
لولا ابن حكام وأشراف قومه
Had it not been for the son of rulers and nobles of his people,
شتمت مجاشعا ببني كليب
I reviled, yielding, the clan of Kulayb,
ألا حي الديار بسعد إني
O dweller of the abodes, rejoice in Sa'd!
سإمت من المواصلة العتابا
I grew weary of reproaching continuously,
أواصل أنت سلمى بعد معتبة
Are you still my friend after the estrangement,
لقد هتف اليوم الحمام ليطربا
The dove has cooed today to give delight,
لما دعا الداعي لأعين لم تكن
When the caller called to eyes that were not
يا دار أقوت بجانب اللبب
O abode, I dwelt beside the twisted sands
يا أهل جزرة لا حلم فينفعكم
O people of Jazirat, neither patience benefits you
يا حزر أشبه منطقي وأجلاد
My cautious friend
غزا نمر وقاد بني تميم
A tiger led the tribe of Tamim
أتزور أم محمد أم تهجر
Do you visit the mother of Muhammad or do you shun her?
ذكرت ثرى نواظر والخزامى
You recalled the dwellings of Nawazir and Al-Khuzama
أمامة ليست للتي شاع سرها
Umma is not for the one whose secret is widespread
سمت لي نظرة فرأيت برقا
She glanced at me, so I saw a flashing light
فدى لبني سعد بن ضبة خالتي
A ransom for the clan of Sa'd son of Dhubyan my aunt
تلقى السليطي والأبطال قد كلموا
The heroes and warriors were instructed
فجعنا بحمال الديات ابن غالب
We mourn the bearer of blood-money, son of Galib
إني لوصال بغير شناءة
I am one who reaches out without ulterior motive
حي المنازل بالأجزاع فالوادي
The abodes greeted with tree trunks, then the valley
ما ينسني الدهر لا يبرح لنا شجنا
What time does not make me forget still leaves us with yearning
ألا إنما تيم لعمرو ومالك
Alas, Taim, which belongs to ‘Amr and Malik,
علام تلوم عاذلة جهول
Why does the blamer blame, ignorant one,
لست بمعطي الحكم عن شف منصب
I do not give judgment from a lofty office,
يا تيم ما القارون في شدة القرى
O Taym, neither Qarun was helpless in adversity
ألم خيال هاج من حاجة وقرا
A longing stirred from need has come over me
زار القبور أبو مالك
Abu Malik visited the graves
لقد نادى أميرك بابتكار
Your prince has called for innovation
طربت وهاج الشوق منزلة قفر
Disturbed and longing stirred an abandoned abode,
إن الهجيم قبيلة مخسوسة
The Hujeim are a wretched tribe,
متى كان الخيام بذي طلوح
When were the tents in Thu-al-Huj
أبلغ أبا هرمز عني مغلغلة
Tell Abu Hurmuz from me, bound in chains,
تقول ذات المطرف الهفهاف
The one with fluttering eyelids, swaying hips
ألست اللئيم وفرخ اللئيم
Are you not the despicable one, offspring of the despicable?
ألا قل لربع بالأفاقين يسلم
Lo! Say to the tribe in all regions, "Peace be upon you,
إذا أوضع الركبان غورا وأنجدوا
When the travelers halted at a valley and sought refuge in it
راح الرفاق ولم يرح مرار
My friends have left, but bitterness lingers on,
أمست طهية كالبكار أفزها
Tuhayya awoke as chaste as an untouched virgin
أما صبير فإن قلوا وإن لؤموا
Though some abuse a patient man and blame him,
يا عقب لا عقب لي في البيت أسمعه
O Ukbah, in my house there is no Ukbah to hear
عفا قو وكان لنا محلاً
Kindness passed us by though it once was our abode
أقول لأصحابي اربعوا من مطيكم
I say to my friends, dismount from your riding beasts
ألا حي الديار وإن تعفت
O dweller of the abodes, though they are desolate,
لقد علموا أن الكتيبة كبشها
They knew that the battalion's ram
لو كنت في غمدان أو في عماية
Were I in Ghumdan or in 'Amayah,
أسرى لخالدة الخيال ولا أرى
The imagination has captivated me, and I see no ruins
أبت عيناك بالحسن الرقادا
Your eyes refused slumber's charm,
سيخزى إذا ضنت حلائب مالك
Thou'ayr and 'Asim will feel shame
إذا ذكرت نفسي شريكا تقطعت
If my soul remembers a partner, it is cut to pieces
بان الخليط فعينه لا تهجع
Sleep stays away as his eyes mix with tears,
فلا خوف عليك ولن تراعي
So fear not their rage or flight
أمن عهد ذي عهد تفيض مدامع
Is it from a pact of the one with whom there was a pact that tears overflow
بحري قومي هيجي الأحزانا
وهبت عطاردا لبني صدي
إذا شاع السلام بدار قوم
عوجي علينا واربعي ربة البغل
خف القطين فقلبي اليوم متبول
أميجاس الخبائث عد عنا
اسأل سليطاً إذا ما الحرب أفزعها
ألا حي بالبردين دارا ولا أرى
لمن طلل هاج الفؤاد المتيما
أقبلن من جنبي فتاخ وإضم
على أي دين دين سوداء إذ شوت
عرفت الدار بعد بلى الخيام
ألم تر أن الجهل أقصر باطله
شعفت بعهد ذكرته المنازل
متى أهجم عليك يقل دعي
سنخبر أهلنا بقرى حماس
ألا أيها القلب الطروب المكلف
بان الخليط برامتين فودعوا
حي الديار على سفي الأعاصير
لمن رسم دار هم أن يتغيرا
فلا حملت بعد الفرزدق حرة
أرق العيون فنومهن غرار
غدا باجتماع الحي نقضي لبانة
أمسى فؤادك ذا شجون مقصدا
أهوى أراك برامتين وقودا
متى كان المنازل بالوحيد
أصاح أليس اليوم منتظري صحبي
أنا الموت الذي آتى عليكم
حيوا أمامة واذكروا عهدا مضى
لمن الديار ببرقة الروحان
ما لمنا عميرة غير أنا
طاف الخيال وأين منك لماما
إن بلالا لم تشنه أمه
بئس الفوارس يوم نعف قشاوة
حي الديار كوحي الكاف والميم
عجبت لرحل من عدي مشمس
أجدك لا يصحو الفؤاد المعلل
من ذا يعد بني غدانة للعلى
أبا الورد أبقى الله منها بقية
هاج الشجون برهبى ربع أطلال
أغرتنا أمامة فافتحلنا
إن الذي بعث النبي محمدا
ألا تصحو وتقصر عن صباكا
لعمري لقد أشجى تميما وهدها
أمسى خليطك قد أجد فراقا
بات هلال بالخضارم موجفا
متى ما التوى بالظاعنين نزيع
إن سليطا كاسمها سليط
أعوذ بالله العزيز الغفار
أتذكرهم وحاجتك ادكار
أتنفي قروما من معد لغيرهم
كأني بالمديبر بين زكا
حي الهدملة والأنقاء والجردا
أنا ابن أبي سعد وعمرو ومالك
أرسم الحي إذ نزلوا الإيادا
ألا يا لقوم ما أجنت ضريحة
أراح الحي من إرم الطراد
وباكية من نأي قيس وقد نأت
إن الأسيدي زنباعا وإخوته
لولا أن يسوء بني رياح
أربت بعينيك الدموع السوافح
أتصحو بل فؤادك غير صاح
قد أرقصت أم البعيث حججا
هاج الهوى لفؤادك المهتاج
ألم ترني حززت أنوف تيم
سربلت سربال ملك غير مغتصب
ما أنت يا عناب من رهط حاتم
أخالد عاد وعدكم خلابا
أصبح زوار الجنيد وجنده
أبني حنيفة أحكموا سفهاءكم
غضبت طهية أن سببت مجاشعا
بان الخليط فما له من مطلب
خنازير ناموا عن المكرمات
عرفت منازلاً بلوى الثماني
أمسى فؤادك عند الحي مرهونا
ألا حي أطلال الرسوم الدوارس
قد وطنت مجاشع من الشقا
