1. Your eyes refused slumber's charm,
And denied the truthful and the land.

2. By your life, Su'ad's happiness benefits me not,
While my joy is turned from Su'ad.

3. No blood-money was I made to drink,
Nor any vengeance gained by my murder.

4. Grieving, my companion visited Su'ad
Nearing her tomb, shunning all separation.

5. Soon disaster's missiles will assault us,
Cast by hands releasing harnessed steeds.

6. To you I complain of the gloating foe,
And estrangement, whose beginning was avoidance.

7. How can I, when she is harsh and remote,
Comfort my soul, or calm my heart?

8. You were allowed attainment of wishes
While no fortune allowed us wishes.

9. To you, Omar son of Layla, I came
Trusting, to visit and rely on you.

10. I am wont to righteous deeds; I saw
Man keeps to what he is accustomed to.

11. When the wine-jars come round, I say,
And Fate's cups circle without cease:

12. "May generous Omar, noble steed, son of Layla
Race on, outstripping the racers!"

13. Son of Layla traces back to the Farouk,
And Marwan who raised up the Column.

14. Take provision for us like your father's provision -
Fair provision your father's provision was!

15. Neither Kaab ibn Mamah nor Ibn Su'ada
Were more open-handed than you, generous Omar!

16. Joy to Medina, when it was peopled
By the Folk of the Kingdom - first, then once more!

17. Forbearance returns to Quraysh through you,
And you relieve them of sorrow most grim.

18. You softened their ferocity with gentleness,
And you shepherd people, though your nature is wild.

19. Glory you build, O Omar son of Layla,
Sparing the burdened the year's barrenness.

20. And you call on God with utmost striving, that He be pleased,
Mindful, for your flock's sake, of the Return.

21. Excellent war's brother, when armies advance
Against hosts, pressing on, reinforcements massed!

22. You, son of Khadrama, are of Quraysh,
Who championed prophecy and holy war,

23. And led the faithful, nor were their steeds accustomed
To panic at dawn when they took the lead.

24. When you surpass your peers of Quraysh in merit,
Seas overflowing with abundant rain are stirred up.

25. If you summon the houses of Saad's descendants,
You meet heroes among bygone nobles.

26. The day of the Dogs, the day of Qays, they
Shed blood freely on coats of mail.
