1. The doves cooed by Dhi al-Arak, so it stirred me,
While you are still in thickets and fresh meadows.

2. I likened an abode to the wind that came
Around the resting place throughout a revolving eyelid.

3. A Yemini wind was spread upon you, heralding
After misery, a rainy day.

4. If your companions said farewell, then tell them
To greet the beloved, and those present with him.

5. We dislike parting, even if we stay after them,
For the stayer is obligated to the leaver.

6. The riding camel kneels down at dawn tomorrow,
And today is a day of sweet herbs and visitings.

7. Passion called so I hid a need from my friends,
My patience reached that of the grieving, forbearing.

8. I wept in anguish for my youth, and it pained me,
The knowledge of status with my streaming tears.

9. As for my heart, it will never cease to yearn
For Jumana or the barren doe.

10. I wandered the lonely desert as an outcast,
Making the arms of a withered palm branch my pillow.

11. O mother of Talhah, we have not seen the likes of you
Among helpers, nor in the land of settlements.

12. If the monks of Medina saw you descend,
They would be awed, protected from overflowing minds.

13. For whom are the pregnant camels from mounts and gifts?
Like insects or the shadows of a passing ship.

14. A prepared rider herds them, bare above his legs,
Like a fierce ostrich heading to the racing camels.

15. They brought the pregnant she-camels closer, slowly,
From every repelled, ancient, fleeing she-camel.

16. Listen to the sighs when the resting place of a loved one appears,
The outstretched palms of theseparator or cleaver.

17. From it, with gathered forearms, the flow gushes forth
Covering the ribs like poured kohl.

18. And when the problems were suspended, its verses
Were dragged between inspiration and throats.

19. Beauty in the palm trees of Yathrib departed at dawn,
Or in the meadows from the flourishing settlements.

20. If only al-Zubayr amongst us donned his rope,
The loyal is not to his neighbor like the betrayer.

21. Al-Zubayr found in Dhi al-Sibā' a weakling
For al-Haythalaq and an outburst from a talker.

22. They slept while al-Zubayr was killed as if they were
Deaf asses from a forest of numerous palm trees.

23. Qufayrah the mother of Sa'sa'ah gave birth to her son
Above al-Muzannam between Waṭbah and Jādhir.

24. Qufayrah separated in seclusion and wandered
With her palm between arrivers and departors.

25. Al-Ukhaydir became entangled in my ropes after
Al-Farazdaq stumbled, no shame to the stumbler.

26. Al-Ukhaydir met what you met, and before him
Al-Ba'iz fell without ample honor.

27. And if they hope to gain strength from me,
My strength presses upon them and my verses.

28. And they wish for the bridle with the stakes in relay,
When racing, drawing near, and discussing.

29. I have descended in Mufarrad from Khandaq
Amongst a kingdom's people and victorious king.

30. Our debts upon you were great,
From honored, mighty, powerful booty.

31. What can you say when you know Khandaf
Is the flower of stars and every gushing sea?

32. Poems have trodden coquettishly upon,
And trodden Tadlīb―they have no deterrent.

33. I was told Tadlīb worships their cross
Facing south with the two prostrations.

34. They seek help from Saint Sergius and his son
After the cross―they have no victor.

35. Al-Ukhaydir lied that our horses halted
During battle, and none are seen in the Samir.

36. In retreat we lessen the iron from the wound
After the cutting off of poles and tent pegs.

37. Ask all of them about Abū Rabi'ah's family,
And ask Banū Ghubar the next confused morning.

38. The steeds of Banū Tamīm trampled Tadlīb
The day after Ḥayyī Hājir.

39. And when they return after trampling our enemy,
They are brought between notables and chieftains.

40. Our horses descended you from the heights of Khazar,
And war is of daring and covering over.

41. Al-Ukhaydir, the cross, and Tadlīb were lost,
And they measure what they gathered with loss.

42. You bought your father’s doom―painful the drink
With the corruption of Tadlīb―evil the merchant’s profit.

43. Pay the penalty and leave the boasting of Tadlīb,
Degrade yourself to the position of the disgraced weakling.

44. I was told Tadlīb, after I split them open,
Make excuses―they have no justifier.

45. And Tadlīb, when its beloved was absent,
Its nails sank into the worst of lowlands.

46. Al-Ukhaydir cannot withstand a mule,
Its fangs like shards of glass bracelets.

47. With us are the caliphate, prophecy, and guidance,
And the counselors, discussing every day.

48. And al-Ukhaydir hoped to stir our sea,
But met the stupidity of the raging, gushing sea.

49. Between the eyebrows and beard of Tadlīb
Are shameful traits that make the elderly inherit from the elderly.

50. O son of an evil woman! Where are those you prepared
For Banū Fazārah or Ḥayyī 'Āmir?

51. And when you meet the Heraclian fleets of Khandaf,
Strutting after deception and gambling,

52. You have deviated from the ways, and did not cease to be
Amongst them, kings of lineage and pulpits.
