1. The abodes prosper with a wise one, so be prosperous
Like a revelation in elegant script on parchment
١. حَيِّ الدِيارَ بِعاقِلٍ فَالأَنعُمِ
كَالوَحيِ في رَقِّ الكِتابِ المُعجَمِ
2. A relic over which the winds drag trains
And spotted cattle graze among acacias
٢. طَلَلٌ تَجُرُّ بِهِ الرِياحُ سَوارِياً
وَالمُدجِناتُ مِنَ السِماكِ المِرزَمِ
3. Every valley exposed by a downpour decays
Or every tempest whose pebbles it hurls far away
٣. عَفّى المَنازِلَ كُلُّ جَونٍ ماطِرٍ
أَو كُلُّ مُعصِفَةٍ حَصاها يَرتَمي
4. You have attained the need for which you strived
While with the beasts is another need, unattained
٤. أَصرَمتَ حاجَتَكَ الَّتي قَضَّيتَها
وَمَعَ الظَعائِنِ حاجَةٌ لَم تُصرَمِ
5. Gazelles of meadows that have not faced the arrows
Of archers nor the spears thrown in battle
٥. بَقَرٌ أَوانِسُ لَم تُصِب غِرّاتِها
نَبلُ الرُماةِ وَلا رِماحُ المُستَمي
6. One after another, the abandoned tents decayed
And the dwellings of the mortgaged faded away
٦. أَخلَفنَ كُلَّ مُتَيَّمٍ مَنَّينَهُ
وَجَفَونَ مَنزِلَةَ الرَهينِ المُغرَمِ
7. Indeed, the hated one has dwellings with us
Not like the dwellings of the loved one, honored
٧. إِنَّ البَغيضَ لَهُ مَنازِلُ عِندَنا
لَيسَت كَمَنزِلَةِ المُحِبِّ المُكرَمِ
8. No glance at you on a day that you place
The preference of a cloak and take caution with bracelets
٨. ما نَظرَةٌ لَكَ يَومَ تَجعَلُ دونَها
فَضلَ الرِداءِ وَتَتَّقي بِالمِعصَمِ
9. I have traversed ignorant lands and watering places
And their camel saddles are the color of andam wood
٩. وَلَقَد قَطَعتُ مجاهِلاً وَمَناهِلاً
وَجِمامُ آجِنِها كَلَونِ العَندَمِ
10. And when the adorned camels ranged about
Their brands were counted as the claws of the monitor
١٠. وَإِذا المُطَوَّقُ باضَ في أَرجائِها
حُسِبَت نَقائِضُهُ فَلاقُ الحَنتَمِ
11. Indeed, al-Walid is the caliph to a caliph
Who raised the edifice above a greater edifice
١١. إِنَّ الوَليدَ خَليفَةٌ لِخَليفَةٍ
رَفَعَ البِناءَ عَلى البِناءِ الأَعظَمِ
12. Your structure you ennobled and exalted
And for you are the plains of every valley teeming
١٢. فَعَلا بِناؤُكُمُ الَّذي شَرَّفتُمُ
وَلَكُم أَباطِحُ كُلِّ وادٍ مُفعَمِ
13. How much sun-scorched wilderness have I traversed toward you
The night-darkness of which is like ambiguous night
١٣. كَم قَد قَطَعتُ إِلَيكَ مِن دَيمومَةٍ
يَهماءَ غُفلٍ لَيلُها كَالأَيهَمِ
14. I left the cameleer's song behind, crawling
After visiting at noon and earnest journeys
١٤. وَتَرَكتُ ناجِيَةَ المَهارى زاحِفاً
بَعدَ الزِوَرَّةِ وَالجُلالِ الأَحزَمِ
15. Indeed, al-Walid, he is the chosen imam
His banner stirs to victory and booty
١٥. إِنَّ الوَليدَ هُوَ الإِمامُ المُصطَفى
بِالنَصرِ هُزَّ لِواؤُهُ وَالمَغنَمِ
16. He of the Throne has decreed that you be caliph
You were empowered, so submit, O speaker
١٦. ذو العَرشِ قَدَّرَ أَن تَكونَ خَليفَةً
مُلِّكتَ فَاِعلُ عَلى المَنابِرِ وَاِسلَمِ
17. He inherited the staffs and the swords and claimed ancestry
In a house of honor, with a lofty ladder
١٧. وَرِثَ الأَعِنَّةَ وَالأَسِنَّةَ وَاِنتَمى
في بَيتِ مَكرُمَةٍ رَفيعِ السُلَّمِ
18. I have seen structures built then destroyed
While your throne's edifice is eternal, undiminished
١٨. وَرَأَيتُ أَبنِيَةً خَوَت وَتَهَدَّمَت
وَبِناءُ عَرشِكَ خالِدٌ لَم يُهدَمِ
19. He has abandoned salvation and settled where
His unruly steeds refused and scorned all good
١٩. تَرَكَ النَجاةَ وَحَلَّ حَيثُ تَمَنَّعَت
أَعياصُهُ وَلِكُلِّ خَيرٍ يَنتَمي
20. The land knew that every caliph
From your noble line is like a seasoned phoenix
٢٠. عَرَفَ البَرِيَّةُ أَنَّ كُلَّ خَليفَةٍ
مِن فَرعِ عيصِكَ كَالفَنيقِ المُقرَمِ
21. He broke the noses [i.e. humiliated enemies] and led
Every lofty structure, bold, unbroken
٢١. خَزَمَ الأُنوفَ وَقادَ كُلَّ عِمارَةٍ
صَعبُ القِيادِ مَخاطِرٌ لَم يُخزَمِ
22. Al Walid's sons are to Al Walid in position
Like the full moon ringed by shining stars
٢٢. وَبَنو الوَليدِ مِنَ الوَليدِ بِمَنزِلٍ
كَالبَدرِ حُفَّ بِواضِحاتِ الأَنجُمِ
23. You have soared against the Christians with a soaring
That shook for its impact the mountains of Edessa
٢٣. وَلَقَد سَمَوتَ إِلى النَصارى سَموَةً
رَجَفَت لِوَقعَتِها جِبالُ الديلَمِ
24. Verily, the demolition of their church's structure
Was difficult, so it was a defeat for the noseless
٢٤. إِنَّ الكَنيسَةَ كانَ هَدمُ بِنائِها
قَسراً فَكانَ هَزيمَةً لِلأَخرَمِ
25. Thus your Lord showed you when you destroyed their cross
The light of guidance and taught what we did not know
٢٥. فَأَراكَ رَبُّكَ إِذ كَسَرتَ صَليبَهُم
نورَ الهُدى وَعَلِمتَ ما لَم نَعلَمِ
26. When the battalions raised their banners
It was as if they were the feathers of circling birds
٢٦. وَإِذا الكَتائِبُ أَعلَمَت راياتِها
وَكَأَنَّهُنَّ عِتاقُ طَيرٍ حُوَّمِ
27. He gored heads with resolve, so they scattered
From it, yet the expanse of its bed was not defeated
٢٧. نَطَحَ الرُؤوسَ بِهامَةٍ فَتَفَرَّقوا
عَنها وَعَظمُ فَراشِها لَم يُهزَمِ
28. The stirring of wars when wars ignited
And the livelihoods when pillars of support multiplied
٢٨. مِردى الحُروبِ إِذَ الحُروبُ تَوَقَّدَت
وَحَياً إِذا كَثُرَت عِمادُ الرُزَّمِ
29. I am one of those who judge your contention
Which bubbles from the mighty Euphrates
٢٩. إِنّي مِنَ المُتَنَصِّفينَ سِجالَكُم
يَنفَحنَ مِن ثَبَجِ الفُراتِ الأَعظَمِ
30. I hope for the excellent ones' precedence of merit among them
Yet I fear the ferocity of the gloomy ignoble one
٣٠. أَرجو سَوابِقَ ذي فَواضِلَ مِنهُمُ
وَأَخافُ صَولَةَ ذي شُبولٍ ضَيغَمِ
31. I complain to you, and perhaps you will protect me
From the bite of time and the debt of the infatuated
٣١. أَشكو إِلَيكَ وَرُبَّما تَكفونَني
عَضَّ الزَمانِ وَثِقلَ دَينِ المَغرَمِ
32. The land's expanse is harnessed, levied for you
And the sea is harnessed with ships fully laden
٣٢. بَرُّ البِلادِ مُسَخَّرٌ يُجبى لَكُم
وَالبَحرُ سُخِّرَ بِالجَواري العُوَّمِ
33. You see the leather buckets which the star of fortune
Extends like the channels filled to the brim
٣٣. وَتَرى الجِفانَ يَمُدُّها قَمعُ الذُرى
مَدَّ الجَداوِلِ بِالأَتِيِّ المُفعَمِ
34. And the cooking pots bubble ambitiously and hurl
With fraud the murmur of the dusky steed
٣٤. وَالقِدرُ تَنهِمُ بِالمَحالِ وَتَرتَمي
بِالزَورِ هَمهَمَةَ الحِصانِ الأَدهَمِ
