1. What longing of yours is stirred by the traces of settlements
At Tawil Bilwa or at rugged Matar?

2. The storms have left remnants of their forms:
They razed tents and untethered camels.

3. Were you grieved when you parted from Unaizah
As you loved it when you visited al-Aḥfār?

4. I saw your fire when its fuel blazed,
So I saw the best kindled fire.

5. As for al-Ba‘īth, it has become clear that he
Is a slave whom you made equal to al-Ba‘īth.

6. Cowardice has reviled al-Ba‘īth and caused
Umm al-Farazdaq to yell at the evilest disputant.

7. Indeed, al-Farazdaq, al-Ba‘īth, his mother
And Abū al-Ba‘īth are the evilest protectors.

8. Al-Farazdaq has fallen in the wager and confusion has enveloped him—
The obscurity of incompetence, a loser in the race.

9. You hope for reconciliation, O Farazdaq, after you have
Extinguished your fire and borrowed my fire.

10. Indeed, my fire burns whoever I intend to revile;
It is my fire. May its flames reach the tyrants!

11. Woe to your pride in misguidance! Your father's robe
Has never ceased to be stained with shame.

12. What can you say when I have overcome you
While the Muslims approve of what I say?

13. If you appeal the judges will rule against you.
If you boast, my boasting is higher than yours.

14. I am the day surpassing you with its light.
The night conceals the outreach of visions.

15. We roar on Thursday—you will see it
Has splendor. We will topple the palace of the tyrant.

16. When protectors do not begrudge their daughters
On the day of release, no neighbor envies his neighbor.

17. Where are horsemen like ours for your people
On the day of the heavily loaded, fully caparisoned horses?

18. My people whom the mention of their name
Increases my hearing and my sight depended on their light.

19. Those who flow on tongues like sores—
Red, blistered—their gums unskilled.

20. Do you thank one who recovered your captives
While the women behind were heavily burdened?

21. My horsemen are known in the marches
And they dispel the darkness of every dust cloud.

22. We are the builders, buttresses and bastions
Rising above every buttress and bastion.

23. You call upon Rabī‘ah while the shirt is ripped open
Beneath the cloak, fastened with buttons.

24. Al-Ba‘īth and the slave of Banū Muqā‘is
Cannot recite a single sūrah of the soothsayers.

25. Inform Banū Wabān that their women
Are wicked—daughters of Muwaqqi‘ the vile.

26. You were a nation, so excellence was locked from you,
O sons of vileness, O sons of Nukhār.

27. O people of Qufayrah, the vilest of Banū Nizār
Have roped their mounts to you on the day of sharing.

28. The cowards, sons of cowards, are protectors
And the vilest people are in every girdle.

29. The poems have moved on and ridiculed Mujāshi‘
From Egypt to the south and north.

30. They criticize each other when Qayn
Made lawful their sanctuaries in the home of vileness.

31. Do not boast when you hear Mujāshi‘
Conspiring—the conspiracy of muleteers.

32. Are you angry with me that Qufayrah resembles
The position of a cuckold and a feeble man?

33. When talk of her reached him, al-Farazdaq said:
The glory of Mujāshi‘ is not glory.

34. You summon Ḍurays, son of Ḥūtāt, when they are agitated
And you say: Woe to you! Who feels my bastion?

35. The poems will always roam as long as
The tale of Ji‘thun is chanted by a vagrant poet.

36. When al-Khaṭfa built, I was pleased with his building
While Abū Farazdaq is the bellows blower.

37. You spend the night drinking at every brocade-wearing
Tattered-sleeved, twisted-wristed vintner.

38. Do not boast! The religion of Mujāshi‘
Is the religion of the Magians walking around an idol.
