1. Alas, they came and the dwellers of Miná bowed down,

5. O Khálid, I loved you after Hind,
So the Khawálid and the Indians tried me.

6. Neither stinginess that disappoints from you nor generosity,
That benefits from you, is of use.

7. We complained of what you knew but you did not care,
And we kept away but the estrangement did not benefit.

8. You thought the dwellings in stony Rahbá were like your covenant,
But truly the covenants have changed.

9. How did you see a house for ‘Uthmán
For which the dry wood of Wáqisah is kindled?

10. A passion in Tihámah and a passion in Najd,
So the sands and the uplands tried me.

11. Then chant, O Farazdaq, without exalting,
For today chanting disgraced you.

12. You went out from Madínah undecently
And witnesses rose up against you in the sanctuary.

13. The Christians love you on their feast day
And the Jews escort you on the Sabbath.

14. If you are stoned the ḥudúd are obligatory
And there befalls you what befell Thamúd.

15. You follow whoever you know has wealth
Just as nuts are given to monkeys.

16. Do you make the Kiláb girls equal to highbred steeds
Upon whom are gold-embroidered saddles and Yemen cloth?

17. They came back safe and gained good fortune,
And with coats-of-mail that File can pierce.

18. And we defended the tribes of Iyád though few,
And you know the notches of their arrows.

19. Al-Ḥawfazán marched on and he was mighty,
While Abjar, I do not like him nor is he clever.

20. He took them by surprise at the foot of Dhi Ṭuluḥ
Caravans that are not humiliated and do not turn back.

21. They contend with the young men and Laylá visits
Jubayr while she is confiding her secret.

22. My horsemen who met Buḥayr
And warded off the horses when Yazíd called.

23. We repelled the warring parties as you know
At Dhi Najb while we were clad in iron.

24. Then bring to the swelling (varicose vein) gently,
When it swells and the vein stands out.

25. They did not guard the frontiers as we guard them,
Nor did they ward off Thursday as we ward it off.

26. You mocked the hirelings of Az-Zubayr,
As though you were the coddled and the petted ones.

27. Wa-Qiṭ is not patient with you,
As Zarwad was patient with your baseness.

28. Indeed, Farazdaq has disgraced the people of Laylá
And the tribe of Taym whom their driver has led astray.

29. I linked the wrong-doers with Marmaris
Before whom the servant abases himself.

30. If immortality belonged by excellence to a people
Above a people, we would have immortality.

31. I castrated Mujáshi‘ and maimed Taym
And with me - so know - there is increase for them.

32. And the people said, ‘The perdition of Taym has strayed,’
Was there not amongst them a rightly-guided man?

33. It became evident where you, O son of Taym, are struggling fruitlessly
For before you the excellent daring got there first.

34. Does Taym hope for the hunting birds of Buġáth
When the hunting birds do not protect and do not hunt?

35. You presented to us wild doves with claws
While your birds are in their crannies tied fast.

36. Is Taym making itself an equal opponent to me
While Taym compared to Tamím - how far apart!

37. Our father is Málik and your father is Taym,
So is Taym for one of noble lineage an equal opponent?

38. You did not beget Nawár and Mughda' the blessed did not beget you,
Prolific bearers of children.

39. I am the son of the noblest two, I was begotten
By a noble family between Zayd Manát and hunted game.

40. I repel those who shoot at me and a shield
Of their attributes, firm, turns away from me.

41. Are you threatening Zayd Manát, O son of Taym?
Make evident where your threat has strayed!

42. You threaten us and forbid what we desire
While we take from behind you what we want.

43. And the matter is decided when Taym is absent
And they are not consulted though they are present.

44. Neither lineage which an honourable man boasts of
Nor ancestry when the ancestors press together.

45. The riff-raff of mankind are the noble ones of Taym
And their leader though they loathe him.

46. And were you to meet the slaves of Taym
And Taym you would say, 'Which of them are the slaves?'

47. The baseness of Taym resembles the baseness of their father,
Garments whose patches are black.

48. They were created for them and from them
So neither their skins wear out nor their patches.

49. And the halters of the routed from ‘iqál
Whose inheritor is Jubayr or Labíd.

50. The enemy see in me apart from Tamím
Merely wind-bags no lion approaches.

51. By your father's life, the days of Taym
Have not been fortunate nor have they had success.

52. I fixed seasons against the snouts of Taym
And I have certainly made to grimace those I wanted.

53. We will contend with them while the daughters of Taym ask,
'Is rakhsaf or zuhd of the left hand better or nahíd?'

54. That is so, and do not wink, O companion of Laylá
Upon a kír which is pierced in it a tent pole.

55. The Ḥanṭabí dressed you in a woollen garment
While you strutted proudly in it.

56. And Shaddád dressed you in a garment of baseness
While the humiliating things do not cease.

57. When the martyrs are brought near one day
Taym will have no martyr that day.

58. They attacked my fire so I said, 'It is the disgrace of Taym,
Light it, for the fuel has caught fire.'

59. And we came near when the doors were closed to Taym,
The young men barred the doors and the delegations were cut off.

60. And we burned every crooked tall arbitrator
Whom counter-argument and flowers oppose.

61. As an impartial man would examine his riding beast
For weakness in Dhi'r-Radhát their chief.

62. We repelled them and the daughter of Taym asks,
'Is rakhsaf foam of the left side or nahíd?'

63. That one, so do not wink, O companion of Laylá,
Upon a dry branch in which a tent pole is pierced.

64. Al-Ḥanṭabí clothed you in a woollen robe
While you swagger proudly wearing it.

65. And Shaddád clothed you in a garment of vileness
But the humiliating things do not cease.

66. When the martyrs are brought near one day
Taym will have no martyr on that day.

67. They attacked my fire, so I said, 'It is the disgrace of Taym.
Kindle it, for the fuel has caught fire.'

68. And we came near when the doors were closed against Taym,
The young men barred the doors and visitors were cut off.

69. And we burned every crooked tall judge
Whom argument and present oppose.

70. Like an even-handed man examining his riding camel
For weakness, with Dhi'r-Radhát their chief.

71. We fought them, and the daughter of Taym asks,
'Is Rakhshaf froth of the left hand or Nahid?'

72. That one, and do not wink, companion of Layla,
At a palm branch pierced with a tent pole.

73. Al-Hanṭabī clothed you in a woolen robe
While strutting proudly in it you swagger.

74. And Shaddād clothed you in a garment of vileness
But the humiliating things do not cease.

75. When the martyrs are brought near one day
Taym will have no martyr on that day.

76. They attacked my fire, so I said, 'It's Taym's disgrace,
Kindle it, for the fuel has caught fire.'
