١. لَعَمري لَئِن خَلّى جُبَيرٌ مَكانَهُ
لَقَد كانَ شَعشاعَ العَشِيَّةِ شَيظَما
2. With arms longer than spear shafts, you would see him
When the people recoiled, stepping forward
٢. أَشَمَّ طُوالَ الساعِدَينِ تَرى لَهُ
إِذا القَومُ هابوا القَومَ أَن يَتَقَدَّما
3. By my life, Muhariz was borne high on the bier
A man of chaste conduct and generosity
٣. لَعَمري لَقَد عالى عَلى النَعشِ مُحرِزٌ
فَتىً نالَ قِدماً عِفَّةً وَتَكَرُّما
4. A man more alive than a sprightly young girl
And braver than a lion with hasty steps
٤. فَتىً كانَ أَحيا مِن فَتاةٍ حَيِيَّةٍ
وَأَشجَعَ مِن لَيثٍ بِخَفّانَ مُقدِما
5. When meat was the provision, his meat was not
Hoarded, but shared among the living
٥. إِذا اللَحمُ كانَ الزادَ لَم يُلفَ لَحمُهُ
جَميعاً وَلَكِن شاعَ في الحَيِّ أَلحُما
6. When leadership suited the tribe, none but he
Would undertake it, smiling if guests knocked at night
٦. إِذا الأَمرُ نابَ الحَيَّ لَم يُقضَ دونَهُ
وَإِن طَرَقَ الأَضيافُ لَيلاً تَبَسَّما
