1. My friends have left, but bitterness lingers on,
Remaining after the mourners have gone.
١. راحَ الرِفاقُ وَلَم يَرُح مَرّارُ
وَأَقامَ بَعدَ الظاعِنينَ وَساروا
2. Do not go far, for all that lives must perish,
And for each fading life, a term is set.
٢. لا تَبعَدَنَّ وَكُلُّ حَيٍّ هالِكٌ
وَلِكُلِّ مَصرَعِ هالِكٍ مِقدارُ
3. The best were none but his father and uncle,
And each people has its leaders and best.
٣. كانَ الخِيارَ سِوى أَبيهِ وَعَمِّهِ
وَلِكُلِّ قَومٍ سادَةٌ وَخِيارُ
4. They do not surrender their neighbor in misfortune,
But are neighbors to those who dread misfortune.
٤. لا يُسلِمونَ لَدى الحَوادِثِ جارَهُم
وَهُمُ لِمَن خَشِيَ الحَوادِثَ جارُ
5. And I say in sorrow, tried as we are by it,
While copious tears moisten my cloak,
٥. وَأَقولُ مِن جَزَعٍ وَقَد فُتِنا بِهِ
وَدُموعُ عَيني في الرِداءِ غِزارُ
6. For those burying the brother of generosity and bounty,
By God, the stones have guaranteed you nothing.
٦. لِلدافِنينَ أَخا المَكارِمِ وَالنَدى
لِلَّهِ ما ضَمِنَت بِكَ الأَحجارُ
7. When they set out in the tenderest dawn,
Like the moon whose rain is sought,
٧. لَمّا غَدَوا بِأَغَرَّ أَروَعَ ماجِدٍ
كَالبَدرِ تُستَسقى بِهِ الأَمطارُ
8. My soul almost ruptured with grief
When the morning excursion became but a tomb visit.
٨. كادَت تَقَطَّعُ عِندَ ذَلِكَ حَسرَةً
نَفسي وَقَد بَعُدَ الغَداةَ مَزارُ
9. May God pray upon you from one with a grave,
The houses emptied for him, now desolate ruins,
٩. صَلّى الإِلَهُ عَلَيكَ مِن ذي حُفرَةٍ
خَلَتِ الدِيارُ لَهُ فَهُنَّ قِفارُ
10. And give you to drink from the starry Pleiades,
From which pours a constant, flowing spring.
١٠. وَسَقاكَ مِن نَوءِ الثُرَيّا عارِضٌ
تَنهَلُّ مِنهُ ديمَةٌ مِدرارُ
