- أبتغي الموت ليس أن صنيعيI seek death—not because my conduct
- أبكي وعبراتي دم فانا الذيI weep, and my tears are blood; for it is I
- أترى نظام الكون أوشك يهدمDo you think the order of the universe is about to crumble,
- أتلفت فهمك في ضيائكYou ruined your understanding through your splendor,
- أحتام تصبو للتصابي وتهزلHow long will you yearn for youthful dalliance and jest,
- أحسن الله في البرية صنعاHow beautifully God has fashioned His creation!
- أحسن بدار قد زها حسنهاA goodly home its beauty graced
- إحفظ وصايا الله يا ذا المتقيKeep God's commandments, O God-fearing one.
- أحكم علي بما تختاره أبداAlways judge me however you choose.
- اخجلت دهرا قد كشفت خداعهYou have shamed an age whose deceit you have exposed,
- أخفاك رمس أم ظاهر عنA grave has hidden you, Umm Zahir, from
- أخفيت عني ما طويت فما اختفىYou hid from me what you folded away, yet it did not stay hidden;
- أخلاي أين المعولات النوائحMy friends, where are the wailing mourners?
- إذا أخطى أمرؤ بالكبر يخطيIf a man sins through pride, he sins
- إذا رمت الصعود إلى علاءIf you seek to rise to lofty heights,
- إذا شمت الحسود به اكتئابIf you see the envious man in sorrow,
- إذا عد اهل الفضل زهرا منيرةIf the people of merit are reckoned as shining stars,
- إذا فقدت منا حرارة روحناIf the warmth of our soul is lost to us,
- إذا كان فعل المرء في الناس سالماIf a person’s deed among people is sound,
- إذا ما أدبرت دنياي عنيIf my world turns away from me,
- إذا ما شئت ان تحيى سعيداIf you wish to live in happiness,
- إذا نهل الهندي ظلما دم الورىIf the Indian blade unjustly drinks the blood of humankind,
- أرسلت منظومي اليك مؤرخاI sent you my verse, recording
- أرى في يد التسماح عظما مجرداI see a bare bone in the crocodile’s hand,
- أشر رئيس من أضل بحزبهThe worst leader is one who leads his party astray
- أشمس الضحى لاحت ام الكون باسمHas the morning sun appeared, or is the universe smiling?
- أضحي وأبصاري تغض وتبصرI spend the day with my eyes lowering their gaze and looking,
- أعيى على كل نطس طب اربعةThe treatment of four ailments has baffled every skilled physician;
- أكرم بشأن كنيسة قد شيدتHow noble is the standing of a church that has been built,
- أكرم بمولود اتىHow noble is the newborn who has come,
- أكرم بمولود لاكرم والدHow noble a newborn of the noblest father!
- ألا إن مغنى المجد ثلت دعائمهBehold, the pillars of glory's dwelling have been shattered,
- ألا رعاك الاله من وطنAh, may God protect you—what a dwelling,
- ألا فالكرى خل ردي مضيعBehold, slumber is a vile companion, squandering
- ألا قاطعوا الدنيا فقد واصلت أذىBehold, break with the world, for it has persisted in harming
- ألا يا ذا الهمام الألمعيHark, O you high-minded, keen-witted man,
- إلام أداري الجسم حرصا وأتعبHow long shall I anxiously tend the body and wear myself out,
- الحب يبتلع الأتعاب قاطبةLove swallows hardships, one and all.
- الشيخ صقر الخازني قد مضىSheikh Saqr al-Khazini has passed away.
- الطفل الأقدس بهجتي وبهائيThe holiest child, my joy and my glory
- العدل يبني والأمان يشيدJustice builds, and security raises firm structures.
- العمر فان والتنعم زائلLife perishes, and pleasure passes away.
- الغم والهم هما آفة للقلبGrief and worry are a blight upon the heart.
- المرء موضوع التغاير إذ بداMan is subject to change, for he appears
- الموت معلوم واما نوعهDeath is certain; but as for its manner
- إلى كم تعتني في رحض جسمHow long will you attend to washing a body
- إلى ما لا تكف عن المعيبHow long will you persist in shameful deeds,
- أليوم ضاءت لمحة السر الخفيToday a gleam of the hidden mystery shone
- أمانا لبنيان غدا أسه الصفاSafety to a building whose foundation has become the Rock!
- أمر من اللألاء بالمن منةA favor with reproachful reminders is more bitter than laʾlāʾ;
- إن اجتماع الدين والدنيا معاThe joining of religion and world together,
- إن الجمال مع الصيانةIndeed, beauty with chas-
- إن الحواس مصارع الظلماتIndeed, the senses are the killing grounds of
- إن الخطية خطة ما اسطاعهاIndeed, sin is an ordeal that could not be borne
- إن السياسة لم تصلح لذي جسدGovernance is not suited to a mortal,
- إن الشجاعة في التحمل للأذىIndeed, courage in enduring harm
- إن الغني مع الغنى يوم المناIndeed, the rich man with his wealth, on the day of death,
- إن الفروع تجيء مثل أصولهاIndeed, the branches come forth like their roots,
- إن الملامة للصنيع ولائماIndeed, censure of a deed and a reprover
- إن الونية موت العزم كم دفنتIndeed, indolence is the death of resolve—how many it has buried
- إن تكن راهبا فكن نواحاIf you are a monk, be a constant mourner.
- إن حادث يختص أو يشملIf a calamity affects one or all,
- إن خط أقلام النفوس مظالماIf the pens of souls inscribe injustices,
- إن شمت ذا سدر فكن متمايلاIf you see someone staggering astray, then walk with wavering step,
- إن شئت أن تبني بناء شامخاIf you wish to build a lofty edifice,
- إن شئت أن تحظى بماIf you wish to attain that which
- إن شئت قتل الحاسدين تعمداIf you wish to kill the envious deliberately,
- إن قيل ما أردى الوحوش كواسراIf asked which beasts are worst—predatory
- إن كنت ذا شوق فإني أشوقIf you yearn, then I yearn even more
- أنظر إلى حسن النفوس ولا تكنLook at the beauty of souls, and do not be
- أنظر لما في الفتى من حسن منقبةLook at the fine virtues in the young man,
- إنما الصحة خير وافرHealth is indeed an abundant blessing;
- إنما المرء من المرأةMan comes only from woman,
- إنني أشكو فواجي الألمI lament the sudden assaults of pain;
- أوار البلايا يوضح العزم في الفتىThe blaze of afflictions reveals resolve in a young man,
- أي بطرس القس تم الحكم فيك كماO Peter the priest, the sentence upon you was fulfilled, as
- أي مار نيقولاوس المولى الذيO Nicolas the saint who attained
- أي محتد الخطر المؤيدO source of firmly upheld eminence,
- أيا راهبا إن شئت تحظى بنعمةO monk, if you wish to attain grace,

- أيها الخل المحاجيO riddling friend,
- أيها الواعظ المحاول مدحاO preacher, striving to win praise—
- بادر إلى استئصال كل جريرةHasten to uproot every transgression

- بشراك موسى بالغلام فقدGlad tidings to you, Musa, of the boy, for
- بعدا لدهر ان ترى طول المدىFar be it from Time that, throughout its whole span, you should see
- تبغي لغيرك أن يكون مهذباYou wish another to be refined,
- تحفظ بإيصاء الاله وثق بهHeed God's injunction and trust in Him.
- تدبر بالأمور على قياسConsider affairs through reasoning
- تدثر بالصواب تنل ثواباWrap yourself in right conduct, and you will earn a reward
- ترجو اليهود أن يأتي المسيح وقدThe Jews hope that the Messiah will come, yet he has
- تعاظمت الذنوب فاكتسبتنيThe sins grew grievous, bringing me
- تفكر بالمآل ودع طماعاConsider the final outcome, and cease being covetous;
- تنبه الدهر بعد ما هجعاTime awoke after it had slumbered.
- توق شراهة عاثت بحسمBeware gluttony that has wrought havoc with decisiveness;
- ثغر الزمان لقد غدا متبسماTime's mouth has indeed broken into a smile.
- جعلتني بين أعدائي الثلثةYou have placed me among my three enemies and the

- حادي المنية لا يألو المسير رجاDeath's camel-driver spares no effort on the journey, urging onward

- خطاؤك وافر بالوزر طامYour wrongdoing is abundant, overflowing with sin;

- سئمت حياتي من كرور المصائبI have wearied of my life through recurring calamities,
- سئمت من الدنيا لأني سبرت ماI have grown weary of the world, for I have plumbed what
- شرة الأسباب في كل امرئThe vehemence of the causes within every person
- شرع الذي شرع النفاق بشرعهThe law of him who ordained hypocrisy through his law
- شيآن تقذى منهماTwo things irritate
- صاح ليس النسك في لبس العباO friend, devotion is not in wearing a cloak.
- صدع المنى صدر المآثر في الورىDeath has cleft the breast of glorious deeds among humankind.
- ضعف الطبيعة مقرون بفطرتهاNature's weakness is bound up with its innate disposition;
- ظلم البصيرة في النفوس مسببDarkness of insight in souls causes
- عجبا لطاغ في البرية مفسدHow strange—a tyrant spreading corruption among humankind,

- فيك للشهوة غيمWithin you is a cloud of desire,

- قد زارنا الرحمن واتضح الهدىThe Merciful visited us and guidance became clear

- قرت لحاظ والفؤاد قريرEyes were gladdened, and the heart is content,

- قل منبع الأراتقهSay: the fountainhead of heretics

- قيل الأبالس قد يعاند بعضهمThe foes may quarrel among themselves
- كأن هبات الله حين تقسمتIt is as though, when God's gifts were apportioned,

- كلامك من كمالك مستفادYour speech is derived from your perfection;

- لا تسلني يا عائدي عن فؤاديDo not ask me, O my visitor, about my heart.
- لا تعجبن بمن راضوا الجسوم فقدDo not marvel at those who disciplined their bodies, for
- لا تغبطن أمرا يزهو بثروتهDo not envy a man who prides himself on his wealth,
- لا تكثرن من الكلام فإنماDo not speak too much, for
- لا تنقسم رأيا بعقلك كالذيDo not be divided in opinion within your mind, like one
- لا لا تعيرن أمرأ فيما أتىNo, no—do not reproach a man for what he has done.

- ما مرأة السوء إلا وهدة العطبA wicked woman is nothing but a pit of ruin.
- ماذا أقول وذنبي لا قرار لهWhat shall I say, when my sin is bottomless?
- مازال هذا الدهر فينا لاعباThis age has never ceased to toy with us,
- متى ما اسطعت جودا فابذلنهWhenever you can give generously, be sure to do so;
- محتد المجد والعلاء المنيفO source of glory and lofty eminence,
- مصاحب الرجل السوء المخادع لاWhoever keeps company with a wicked, deceitful man never
- ممنع عهد لم يضع عنده عهدInviolable in covenant, with whom no pledge is lost,
- من المحال اجتماع القبح والحسنIt is impossible for ugliness and beauty to coexist.
- من أي شيء يا فتىOf what, O youth,
- من كان ليس بخاضع لرئيسهWhoever is not submissive to his superior
- من لي بذنب ساق لي من منيتيOh, for a fault that brought me, from my heart's desire,
- من يخدم الدنيا الدنية طائعاWhoever serves the base world willingly,
- منصورة تزهو محاسنهاMansura—her beauties flourish proudly;
- مهما نمت منا الجسوم وأخصبتHowever much our bodies grow and flourish,
- مولى عطاياه سمت فوق العلاA lord whose gifts soared above the loftiest heights,
- مولى قضى بالله ممتلئا بهA lord who passed away in God, filled through Him
- نح واجر بالسفح الذي دنستهLament, and pour upon the slope you have defiled
- نشكر الله لم يصر غير هذاWe thank God: nothing other than this occurred—
- نظرت كل البرايا جل موجدهاI surveyed all creatures—exalted be their Maker—
- نلوم ذي الدنيا على أنهاWe blame this world for being
- هاك يا رب الفتاTake the youth, O Lord.
- هذا الكتاب الذي قد جاء مشتملاThis book, which has come encompassing
- هذا سبيل الله هم به الهمامThis is God's fountain, undertaken by the magnanimous—
- هنئت يا دار السعادة واعتلنCongratulations, O house of happiness! There has appeared
- هو العمر أهناه اصطناع المكارمLife's greatest delight is the practice of noble deeds.
- وإذا شعرنا بالخطية باطناAnd when we are inwardly aware of sin,
- وأعمدة لبيت الله سبعAnd seven are the pillars of God's house;
- وردية العذراء ام الله قدThe Rosary of the Virgin, Mother of God, has
- وسائل ما تقول الآن في زمنيAnd someone asked: “What do you say now of my time?”
- ولرب أربع في الورى لم يكفهاAnd indeed, four things in this world have never had enough
- ولرب غرقى أشغلوا بنفوسهمAnd many drowning people were preoccupied with themselves,
- ولقد مزجت زعاق طبعك بالإخاءIndeed, I mixed your nature’s briny bitterness with brotherhood,
- وللعباد مزايا جمة جملتAnd people have many beautiful virtues,
- ولم تحصر الافضال منه كانهAnd his acts of generosity were unbounded, as though he
- ولما أتتني منك يا غاية المنىWhen you sent me messages, O ultimate wish
- ولن تبقى بلا هم إذا لمAnd you will not remain free of worry unless
- وليس يد تقبلها لخوفAnd a hand you kiss out of fear is not
- وما اسم اصله نبتAnd what word, in its original form, names a plant,
- وما اسم سما في دوره حينما أتىAnd what name rose high in its turn, when it came
- وما اسم على حرفين جاء ثلثةAnd what noun, formed from two letters, appears as three,
- وما اسم يعم الحزن والسهل طردهAnd what name, read forward, encompasses rugged and level ground?
- وما بيضا منعمةAnd what is this white, pampered one,
- وما رأسه مثنى وتأخير جوفيهAnd what is it whose head is doubled, and whose two inner letters are moved back—
- وما ظاهر يوما بأمن وراحةAnd none ever appears safe and at ease,
- وما مال مني القلب يوما إلى السوىAnd never has my heart inclined toward any other,
- ومتى ما خلت أني في أمانAnd whenever I thought that I was safe,
- ومن لم يهو من دنياه شيئاAnd whoever has loved nothing of his worldly life,
- ومن نكد الدنيا على الحر أن يرىAnd among the world's afflictions for a noble man is to see
- ومن يذق الأشيا كهيئة كونهاAnd whoever tastes things as they are,
- ومن يطمع بعفو الله حتىAnd whoever hopes for God's pardon until
- يا ألمعيا قد سماO keen-witted one who has risen high
- يا إمام الفضل من أضحىO master of excellence, whose
- يا إماما في احاجيهO Master of Riddles
- يا أولي الفضل والندىO possessors of virtue and bounty,
- يا أيها البطل الذيO you hero who
- يا أيها الغمر الذيO callow, audacious fool,
- يا أيها القرم الذيO eminent man who
- يا أيها القرم الذي تعنوO noble chief, to whom
- يا أيها النحرير منO you accomplished scholar, on whom
- يا أيهذا الناهب اسمع مصغياO you plunderer, listen attentively
- يا بالغا حلم المشيب إلى متىO you who have attained the wisdom of gray hair, how long
- يا بيعة وردية ورد الهدىO rosy church, guidance has come
- يا ثائرا يبغي لهO avenger who seeks for himself
- يا حبذا حلب المنيفة أنهاOh, how lovely is lofty Aleppo! She is
- يا حي اسمعيل حياك الحياO abode of Ismail, may the rain greet you
- يا خاضعا للهوى هلا ارعويت بمنO you who bow to passion, why not take heed of the one
- يا خائضا بحر علمA voyager on the sea of knowledge
- يا ذا الحزوم الأروع الندبO you, the resolute, the awe-inspiring, the
- يا ذا الذي ألفاظهO you whose words
- يا ذا الذي بذكائهO you who, through your intelligence,
- يا ذا الذي بسمو سوO you who, through your lofty nobility,
- يا ذا الذي بين الورىO you who, among humankind,
- يا ذا الذي قد سار في إغوائهO you who have gone on in your waywardness,

- يا صاح ان شئت تسلم هاك اربعةO friend, if you wish to be safe, take these four:
- يا طالبا نسكا تهذبO you who seek to be devout
- يا ظالما مع ظلمه بتظلمO oppressor, who complains of injustice while doing wrong,
- يا ظريفا أهديت خلك ظرفاO witty one, you gave your friend a container,
- يا عالما قد غدا في فضله علماO scholar who has become a beacon through his excellence,
- يا عياذي من داهمات البلاياO my refuge from calamities that strike suddenly,
- يا فاترا فقدت منه حرارتهO lukewarm one, whose warmth has been lost,
- يا فتى إحصاء فضلO young man, to reckon the merit
