مازالَ هذا الدهرُ فينا لاعباً

This age has never ceased to toy with us,

Playing games with its little folk, ever fickle.

أمَّلتُ إلَّا نَيلَهُ ورجوتُ إِلَّا

أمَّلتُ إلَّا نَيلَهُ ورجوتُ إِلَّا

رِفدَهُ وأَبَيتُ إِلَّا ما أَبَى

رِفدَهُ وأَبَيتُ إِلَّا ما أَبَى

I desired only its bounty, and hoped only for

Its aid; and I refused only what it refused.
