أَلا فالكَرَى خِلٌّ رديٌّ مُضِّيعٌ

أَلا فالكَرَى خِلٌّ رديٌّ مُضِّيعٌ

حيوةَ الوَرَى هدراً بجنحِ الغياهبِ

Behold, slumber is a vile companion, squandering

Take heed! For sleep is a wicked companion, squandering

the life of mortals in vain beneath the wing of deepest darkness.

فمَن لم يكُن مستيقظاً ومُصلِّياً

فمَن لم يكُن مستيقظاً ومُصلِّياً

أتاهُ البِلَى والضُرُّ من كلِّ جانبِ

For whoever is not awake and praying,

ruin and harm come upon him from every side.

لَقَد قالَ فادينا يسوعُ لنا اسهَروا

وصَلُّوا لكيلا تَدخُلوا في التجاربِ

Indeed, our Redeemer Jesus said to us, “Keep watch

فطُوبَى لسَهرانٍ مُصَلٍّ لخوفهِ

على كَنزِهِ من شَرٍّ لَصٍّ مُحارِبِ

Blessed, then, is the watchful man who prays, fearing

So blessed is the wakeful one who prays out of fear

for his treasure the evil of a marauding thief.
