Governance is not suited to a mortal,

But is a trial among the greatest trials.

If the resolute, capable, wise man is tried by it,

He reveals to God the weakness within his soul.

You see him keeping sleepless watch over his charge,

Knowing nothing at night of the delight of drowsiness.

In the darkness of night he wards off from his charge

The stealthy night-attack of one who slays in the gloom.

And he prepares for a task, as he manages it,

With the Creator of reason, not with reason and wit.

And he may humble himself in submission and meekness,

Before the Ruler of the universe, the refuge of all who are tried.

Then, when God sees what he reveals through his humility,

He grants him right guidance and success throughout time.

Thus he gains, through rightly turning toward

The Possessor of goodness, a boon that shows him the hidden as plainly as the manifest.

So this soul drinks its fill whenever it thirsts,

From the wellspring of justice, then goodness and blessings.

And it may overflow for those who yield in obedience to it,

With the beneficial good found within it.

Then justice dawns, then goodness, then the joy of the

Governed and the governor who follows the established ways.

But if the ignorant, [inexperienced?] man who leads astray is tried by it,

It delights him, even if he should perish in that pursuit.

He imagines, in his nature, despite his feeble strength,

A capacity within himself for duties many times beyond that strength.

Then ignorance and conceit toy with him, just as

The wind and waves toy with ships.
