None deserves praise except the one

who gives the discerning their due.

Nor is praise due except to one

who seeks nothing but doing good.

Whoever is ignorant of people's worth

has not reached the summit of eminence.

And one who regards all people as equals—

he, by my life, is an arrogant fool.

And praise of the ignorant in my speech

is like the letter r in a lisper's mouth.
