that cleansed the soul of suffering's grit.

They waged war against all three enemies,
Then they deafened the heart of the devil, so it fell
with piety, not with sharp spear and keen sword.

apart—what a gulf between one withered and one growing!
Like the spirit flows in bodies
قدindeed سَرَتcoursed فيthrough عُقولهمtheir minds نِعمةُthe grace of اللَهِGod
كسَريِlike the coursing of الحيوةِlife فيthrough الأَجسامِbodies
God's grace has coursed through their minds
Perfecting every perfection with righteousness
as life courses through bodies.
Completing every completeness with strife
اكملواthey perfected بالسَدادthrough rectitude كلَّevery كَمالٍexcellence
تممواthey completed بالجِهادِthrough spiritual struggle كُلَّevery تِمامِattainment
Through rectitude they perfected every excellence;
All of them are the horses of triumph in righteousness
through spiritual struggle they completed every attainment.
Competing in rising piety
كلهمall of them بالصَلاحِin righteousness خيلُhorses of رِهانٍa race
يَتَبارَونَcompeting بالتُقَىin piety المتساميever-loftier
All of them are racehorses in righteousness,
Without decline, its protector strayed
competing in ever-loftier piety,
Delayed by the stumbling of feet
دُونَexcept سِقطٍa fallen wretch أَضحىwho became شريدُan exile from حِماهمtheir sanctuary
أَخَّرَتهُleft him behind معاثرُthe stumblings of الأَقدامِfeet
except a fallen wretch, now an exile from their sanctuary,
He exceeded all bounds in every wisdom
whom stumbling steps have left behind.
He is unique in reasoning and judgments
فاتpassed beyond حَدَّthe bounds of القِياسِanalogy فيin كلevery حكمٍruling
فَهوَso he is شاذُan anomaly to القِياسِanalogy والأَحكامِand rulings
He has passed the bounds of analogy in every ruling,
Misfortunes threw him into wild valleys
an anomaly to analogy and established rules.
In the land of the idols' city

أرضthe land of واديthe valley of مدينةِthe city of الأَصنامِidols
His fortunes cast him into the wilderness
I felt wretched when I left its ground
of the valley land of the city of idols.
Like a sick man in the grip of illness
خِلتُI imagined نفسيmyself لماwhen حَلَلتُI settled upon ثَراهاits soil
كسقيمٍlike an invalid فيin قبضةِthe grip of الأَسقامِailments
I imagined myself, when I settled upon its soil,
My state in Beal's land was like
like an invalid in the grip of ailments.
The state of the wounded among worries
ماnot حُصوليmy presence بأَرضِin the land of باعَلَBaal إِلَّاexcept
كحُصولِlike the presence of الجريحِa wounded man بينَamong هوامِvermin
My presence in the land of Baal is only
As Joseph's status in Egypt
like a wounded man's presence among vermin.
In prison, not in glory
فمُقاميso my stay بهاthere كيُوسُفِis like Joseph's مِصرٍin Egypt
فيin مُقامthe abode of السُجونprisons لاnot فيin المَقامِhigh station
My stay there is like Joseph's in Egypt,
My fate gave me misery, but
in the abode of prisons, not in high station.
The Virgin granted me favor
خَصَّنيsingled me out بالبُؤُوسfor misery دَهريmy age ولكنbut
خَصَّصَتنيsingled me out البتولُthe Virgin بالإِنعامِfor grace
My age singled me out for misery, but
She is, for the fearful, greatest safety
the Virgin singled me out for grace.
For the seeker of refuge, the best advocate
فَهيَfor she is للخائفينَfor the fearful أَعظَمُthe greatest أَمنٍsecurity
وَهيَand she is للمستجيرfor one seeking refuge خيرُthe best مُحامِprotector
For the fearful she is the greatest security,
She is an ocean pouring the finest qualities
and for one seeking refuge the best protector.
A stream for every suffering, thirsty one
وَهيَand she is بحرٌa sea تُفِيضُpouring forth أَسنَىthe noblest المزاياgifts
وهيَand she is رِيٌّrefreshment لكلfor every صادٍparched one وظامِand thirsty one
She is a sea pouring forth the noblest gifts,
So accept me as the least of servants
and refreshment for everyone parched and thirsty.
And return me to my place of peace
هاhere أَناI am خادمٌa servant ببابِكِat your door ذُلّاًhumbly
فاقبَلينيso accept me منamong أَصغَرthe least of الخُدَّامِthe servants
Here I am, a servant humbly at your door;
Where I have refuge from the harm of enemies
accept me among the least of the servants.
And grant me forgiveness of sins, and be
وارجِعينيand return me إلىto محلّthe place of سكونيmy repose
حيثُwhere ليfor me منfrom أَذَىthe harm of العُداةِthe foes تُحاميyou defend
Return me to the place of my repose,
My savior from the crowds on Judgment Day
where you defend me from my foes' harm.
Peace be upon you - speech has not
وامنَحينيand grant me صفحَforgiveness of الذُنوبِsins وكونيand be
ليfor me شفيعَan intercessor for الخَلاصِsalvation يومَon the day of الزِحامِthe throng
Grant me forgiveness of sins, and be
Praised your system among all people
my intercessor for salvation on the day of the throng.
While pens spoke of you in anthems
فعليكِso upon you السَلامُpeace ماas long as فاهَutters نُطقٌspeech
فيكِabout you بينamong الوَرَىhumankind بمدحin praise نِظامِordered verse
So peace be upon you as long as speech utters
Thanking you in prose and verse
praise of you in ordered verse among humankind,
And reward your praiser with acceptance
وانبَرَتand spoke out فيupon طُرُوسهاtheir pages ناطقاتٍspeaking
عنكِabout you بالشُكرwith thanks أَلسُنُthe tongues of الأَقلامِpens
and upon their pages speak out
Who has adorned his praise with a beautiful ending
the tongues of pens, giving thanks for you.
وحَظِيand was favored منكِby you مادحٌa praiser بقَبُولٍwith acceptance
قدindeed حَباهُbestowed on him بالمدحthrough praise حُسنَthe goodness of الخِتامِthe ending
And a praiser has found acceptance from you,
which bestowed on him, through praise, a happy ending.
