إِنَّindeed الشَجاعةَcourage فيin التَحَمُّلendurance للأَذىof harm
إِنَّ الشَجاعةَ في التَحَمُّل للأَذى
تسموsurpasses الشَجاعةcourage فيin التَغَلُّبِovercoming والظَفَرand victory
تسمو الشَجاعة في التَغَلُّبِ والظَفَر
Indeed, courage in enduring harm
surpasses courage in conquest and victory.
والصبرُand patience أَفضَلُfinest خَلَّةٍvirtue لكِنَّماyet
والصبرُ أَفضَلُ خَلَّةٍ لكِنَّما
يسموrises عليهabove it الصفحُforgiveness عنof أهلthose responsible for الضَرَرharm
يسمو عليه الصفحُ عن أهل الضَرَر
And patience is the finest virtue, yet
forgiving those who cause harm rises above it.
مَنwhoever يَحمِلِcarries الأمواتَthe dead يُجزَis rewarded منby الوَرىhumankind
مَن يَحمِلِ الأمواتَ يُجزَ من الوَرى
والحاملُand the bearer of الأَحياءِthe living منby ربِّthe Lord of البَشَرhumankind
والحاملُ الأَحياءِ من ربِّ البَشَر
Whoever carries the dead is rewarded by humankind,
and whoever bears with the living is rewarded by the Lord of humankind.
لمnot يُمتَدَحwas praised داوُدُDavid فيfor غَلَباتِهِhis victories
لم يُمتَدَح داوُدُ في غَلَباتِهِ
كالعفوِas for forgiveness عنof شاوُلَSaul حينَwhen بهِover him ظفرhe prevailed
كالعفوِ عن شاوُلَ حينَ بهِ ظفر
David was not praised as much for his victories
as for pardoning Saul when he prevailed over him.
منbecause of كونِthe fact that مالكِone who masters نفسهِhimself يعلوrises علىabove
من كونِ مالكِ نفسهِ يعلو على
منone who يَفتَحُconquers المُدُنَthe cities الحصينةَfortified بالوَزَرby force of arms
من يَفتَحُ المُدُنَ الحصينةَ بالوَزَر
For one who masters himself rises above
one who conquers fortified cities by force of arms.
