I have no rest in which I may find repose

In my life except Jesus Christ.

He is indeed my rest, my spirit, and my wine,

My merriment, and then my soothing repose.

My honor in my abasement, and my consolation

In my affliction; there is no turning away from him.

Joy for my heart, and for my mind

Cheer in my sorrow and distress.

Can any repose for me be found in another?

O my God, who but you gives rest?

    أَنتَ رُوحي بل أَنتَ للرُوحِ رُوحُ

    You are my all, and you are all for all;

You are my spirit—indeed, spirit to the spirit.

You are the spirit of existence; indeed, to you the universe

Calls out, glorifying you and crying aloud.

Everything in the world of sense and intellect

Is an eloquent tongue that praises you.

Not for a single day have I solace without you—no,

Nor does anyone but you dispel my distress.

You descended from your heaven until

    Your bestowed grace flooded humankind.

And you opened hearts through miracles

To which a sound mind truly submitted.

You arose for humankind as guide and physician,

And Adam's wounded heart was healed.

    سَكَنَ البحرُ هائجاً والريحُ

    You ruled the elements with decisive command;

The raging sea grew still, and so did the wind.

The Father's image, and the Person equal

In the substance of the divine being, and the radiant ray.

Thus in bodily form he is like lowly mortals,

Yet he is Lord, beyond explanation.

Thus he walks on earth, while upon the throne

He is God, to whom praise is offered.

    يختفي عن إِدراكِها ويَلُوحُ

    His state bewildered minds and exhausted them;

He eludes their understanding and yet appears.

For he is the ignorant one [possibly corrupt]—darkness [unclear word],

    And [unclear fragments] from clarity.

I praise God: I have known the one in whom I

Have believed; the truth is revealing and plain.

    My bliss—rather, my happiness—is that I am

A slave in bondage, begging his bounty.

Not as dissection imagined me thereby.

I have come asking, seeking leave to receive

My Lord's bounty; I am the one seeking it.

He knows my need better than my own heart,

And my secret, which I do not divulge.

O you whose hands are compassionate toward servants,

Whose hands have never ceased bestowing gifts on humankind.

Shall I be seen despairing, when you are my hope?

And seen destitute, when you are the generous one?

O physician of souls, will you neglect me,

While I am gravely sick at heart and wounded?

I am worn down, unable to stir,

Fallen, laid low by the harm of calamities.

My sin has sickened my broken heart, yet

My hope in you is unharmed and sound.

My heart expired and overflowed with grief; it was tended

By a brimming eyelid, whose equal is rare.

And when I recall my past deeds, it grows sweet

For me to repeat my regret, and so I lament.

My breast is too constricted to explain my state; neither my breast

Nor my condition has its substance laid open.

So my conscience is tormented, and my heart

Is harried, and my tears are poured out.

And my entrails, struck by the arrows of

Sins, have wounds that bleed and fester.

Life has passed in seizing amusements,

I used to go out each morning in their vanity, and return each evening.

And forbidden acts I committed heedlessly—

Ruinous sins, whose accounts would run long.

    And willing submission to transgressions,

Whose evening and morning draughts followed one another.

My bodily matter is a savage beast, a predatory animal,

    Defiant, bolting toward pleasures.

A yoke-breaker, refusing to be led, obstinate,

    And untamable, eager for wrongdoing.

Belial is none other than it; grant me relief

From it, O Lord, that I may find rest.
