ياO خاضعاًone who submits للهَوَىto passion هلَّاwhy not ارعويتَyou took heed بمَنfrom one who
دانتsubmitted لديهِbefore him حميرُasses الوحشthe wild فيamong الخَدَمthe servants
O you who bow to passion, why not take heed of the one
O you who submits to desire, why don't you graze with one
before whom wild asses bowed in service?
Whose wild donkeys are obedient to him in service
وقدand indeed غداhe became جاثماًcrouching فوقupon الثَرَىthe dust ولهُand he had

And he had come to crouch upon the dust, with
Who sits atop the ground while from him
tears of remorse overflowing like steady rains.
Tears of sorrow pour forth like dripping water
ياO جاهلاًignorant one عِلمهُhis knowledge أَودىbrought ruin بصِحَّتهِto his health
ظلمتَyou wronged ذاتَكَyourself اذاwhen فرطتَyou went too far فيin اللَمَمِlesser sins
O ignorant one whose knowledge ruined his health,
O ignorant one, his knowledge brought ruin to his health
you wronged yourself when you went too far in lesser sins.
You wronged yourself if you were excessive in blames
فبِئسَso wretched is لازمُthe consequence فعلٍof an act انindeed مُلزِمَهُwhat compels it
ماnot زالَceased فيin جِسمهِhis body مستلزمَentailing السَقَمِsickness
Wretched, then, is an act's consequence: indeed, what compels it
Miserable is the commitment to an act whose committer
continually entails sickness in his body.
Remains in his body necessitating sickness
هذاthis الوُلوعُobsession الذيthat القاكcast you فيinto دَنَفٍwasting sickness
غدوتَyou became منهُfrom it نحيفَgaunt الجِسمthe body كالجَلَمِlike shears
This obsession that cast you into wasting sickness—
This infatuation which threw you into abjectness
from it you have grown gaunt of body, like shears.
You became from it, slender of body like a reed
تَخالُyou imagine انthat بهِthrough it تُكفَىyou are spared أَذَىthe torment of عَلَمٍa banner

You imagine that through it you are spared a banner's torment,
You imagine with it, the harm of a scholar is averted
yet it is what may intensify lustful craving.
Yet it is that which can strengthen a boy's lust
أُفٍّfie! لعادةِon a habit سُوءٍof evil قلَّrare is هاجرُهاone who forsakes it
بهاthrough it المحرّكُthe stimulus ملزومٌinseparably bound لملتزمِto an adherent
Fie on an evil habit that few forsake!
Shame on an evil habit, seldom did its migrant flee
Through it, the stimulus is inseparable from its adherent.
By it the mobilizer is necessitated to the necessitous
ايهٍgo on! امستمنياًO masturbator بالكفّwith the hand مرتعشاًtrembling

ياO ليتَwould that بالشلّwith paralysis ذاكَthat الكفُّthe hand منكَof yours رُمِيwere struck
Go on, O you who masturbate with your hand, trembling!
Woe to you, dependent on the palm, trembling
Oh, if only that hand of yours were struck with paralysis!
Oh, if only that palm which belongs to you were paralyzed

فِسقٌdebauchery وقتلٌand murder ولكنand yet دُونَwithout سفكِshedding دمِblood
This is David's sin, which became notorious:
This is the sin of David which became famous
debauchery and murder, yet without shedding blood.
Transgression and murder but without bloodshed
