1. وما اسمٌ على حرفينِ جاءَ ثلثةً

    لتعريفهِ أَل لا لتعريفِ عدِّهِ

And what noun, formed from two letters, appears as three,

With “al-” marking its definiteness, not determining its count?

  2. وفي قلبهِ فعلٌ وحرفٌ كِلاهما

    لهُ عَمَلٌ فيهِ بإِلزام حَدِّهِ

And in its heart are a verb and a particle, both

Having an effect in it by enforcing its limit.

  3. يُجانِسُهُ اسمٌ خُصَّ بالمدِّ رُتبةً

    فميَّزَهُ عمَّا سِواهُ بمدِّهِ

A kindred noun is singled out in rank by lengthening,

And thereby distinguished from all else by its lengthening.

  4. فأَعجِب بهِ اسماً وَهوَ فعلٌ لقد خلا

    وحرفاً ومعنىً عكسُهُ مثلُ طَردِهِ

So marvel at it as a noun, though it is a verb already past,

And as a particle and a meaning—its reverse is like its forward form.
