وياand O هذاyou الإِمامُthe leader اللوذعيُّthe discerning
Hark, O you high-minded, keen-witted man,
O you whose ambition is sublime
And O you discerning leader!
And you, this revered and respected imam
تَرفَّقbe gentle بيwith me لانيbecause I تُربُdust ارضٍof the earth
وهلand can يسموrise high الثَرَىthe dust وهوwhile it is الدنيُّthe lowly
Be gentle with me, for I am dust of the earth;
Be gentle with me for I was raised on earth
And can dust soar, lowly as it is?
And how can dust rise high for it is low?
فمَنso who اناI فيamong الورىhumankind حتىthat ترانيyou see me
وانتَand you هُوَthe very one الخطيرُthe eminent الأَريحيُّthe magnanimous
So who am I among humankind that you should look upon me,
Who am I in this world that you see me
While you are the eminent, magnanimous one?
While you are the precious, the delightful one
فغيرُfor other than اللَهِGod ليسَis not اخاa brother وِدادٍof affection
هوHe المودودُthe beloved والخِلُّand the intimate friend الوفيُّthe faithful
For none but God is a brother in affection;
None but Allah is a loving brother
He is the beloved and the faithful friend.
He is the Beloved, the Loyal Companion
فكُنso be مسترشداًseeking guidance بسَنَىby the radiance of هُداهُHis guidance
فمنfor whoever لمnot يرتشدtakes guidance منهُfrom Him غويُّastray
So seek guidance by the radiance of His guidance;
So be guided by the ways of His guidance
For whoever takes no guidance from Him is astray.
For whoever is not guided by Him goes astray
هوHe العاليthe exalted علىabove كلall البراياcreatures
سِواهُother than Him فلاso no سنيَّexalted one ولاand no سميُّequal
He is exalted above all creatures;
He is the Exalted over all the lands
Apart from Him, none is exalted or His equal.
Beside Him, neither stellar nor eminent
وماand not القومُthe people السَراةُthe nobles سِوَىexcept هَباءٍdust motes
فهلso is there منfrom دُونِbesides باريناour Maker سَريُّa noble one
And the people's nobles are nothing but dust;
The misguided people are but vanishing mirages
So is there any noble one besides our Maker?
Is there anyone, other than our Creator, enduring?
لهُHis are الافضالthe bounties عمَّتhave encompassed كلَّevery قُطرٍland
لهُHis are المِنَحاتthe gifts والبِرُّand benevolence الحفيُّthe attentive
His bounties have encompassed every land;
To Him belong the endless virtues that reached every region
His are the gifts and attentive benevolence.
To Him belong the gifts, kindness, and sublime morality
لهُHis is الجودُgenerosity العميمُthe all-embracing بكلin every فَجٍّmountain pass
لهُHis are الإِنعامُfavors واللطفُand kindness الخفيُّthe hidden
His is the all-embracing generosity in every mountain pass;
To Him belong the absolute generosity in every expanse
His are favors and hidden kindness.
To Him belong the favors, and the subtle kindness
تُطارِحُنيyou exchange with me القريضَverse وانتand you اهلٌworthy
لهُof it حقّاًindeed وانتَand you بهfor it حريُّwell suited
You exchange verse with me, and you are worthy
You spurn my poem, while you deserve
Of it indeed, and well suited to it.
To Him rightfully while you are free
قريضٌa poem كالعُبابlike the surging sea لهُit has المعانيthe meanings
كلجَّتهِlike its depths وساحلُهُand its shore الرويُّthe rhyme-letter
A poem like a surging sea: its meanings
A poem is like a tempest, with meanings storming
Are like its depths, and its shore is the rhyme-letter.
Like its tumult, and coast, gushing
اتتنيcame to me منكَfrom you بِكرٌa virgin maiden مُستحَبٌpleasing
لهاshe has غَيَدٌsupple grace وحُسنٌand beauty زينبيُّZaynab-like
A pleasing virgin maiden came to me from you;
I received from you, a cherished maid
She has supple grace and beauty like Zaynab's.
Of splendor, and Zainab's grace
فأَهدتنيso she brought me سَلامكyour greeting باحتِشامٍwith modest reserve
فتاةٌa maiden زانَهاadorned her الفِكرُthought الوريُّthe glowing
So she brought me your greeting with modest reserve—
She conveyed your greeting with modesty
A maiden adorned by glowing thought.
A maiden adorned with thoughtful wit
رعاكَmay He watch over you اللَهُGod فاذمُمنيso disparage me لأَنّيbecause I
فتىًa young man منof كُلِّevery مَحمَدةٍpraiseworthy quality عريُّbare
May God watch over you; then disparage me, for I am
May Allah protect you, so include me
A young man bare of every praiseworthy quality.
For I am an uncouth lad from every praiseworthy lineage
فانكfor you فيin امتِداحيpraising me كالمُناديlike one calling
يَباباًa wasteland فالجوابُso the reply لهُto him الدَوِيُّthe echo
For, in praising me, you are like one calling
So you are in praising me like a caller
To a wasteland: the reply he gets is an echo.
Whose loud response is the echo
فانيfor I راهبٌa monk والذَمُّand censure يحلوis sweet
لمثليto one like me وَهوَand it ليfor me ابداًalways حُلِيُّan adornment
For I am a monk, and censure is sweet
But I am a monk, and blame is sweet
To one like me, and it is forever my adornment.
To the likes of me, and is my eternal jewelry
اناI كالآلlike a mirage لاdo not يَغرُركَdeceive you آليmy mirage
لانbecause الآلthe mirage قاصدُهُone seeking it ظميُّthirsty
I am like a mirage; let not my mirage deceive you,
I am like the family, let not my lineage deceive you
For whoever seeks the mirage is thirsty.
For the family, its intimation is lowly
وانand indeed الشَينَugliness انif امعنتyou delve deeply فكراًin thought
ضعيفٌweak قدmay يبارزُهُchallenge it قويُّa strong one
And ugliness, if you ponder deeply,
And if you ponder the letter 'sh'
Is weak: a strong one may challenge it.
The weak can challenge the strong
فلاso do not تغترَّbe deceived فيby برقٍlightning جَهامٍa rainless cloud
فآمِلُهُfor one hoping in it وشائمُهُand one watching it صديُّthirsty
So do not be deceived by lightning from a rainless cloud,
So do not be fooled by the shining mirage
For those who hope in it and watch it remain thirsty.
Hoping for it, but blaming it, prevents attainment
فماذاso what الطَلُّdrizzle إِمَّاeven if قيلit is called وبلٌa downpour
وماand what الوَسميُّthe season's first rain انif قيلَit is called الوَليُّthe following rain
So what is drizzle, even if called a downpour?
What is aspiring if not words and trials?
And what is the season's first rain, if called the rain that follows?
And what is stellar if not excellent?
وتَضأَلُand grow faint أَنجُمٌstars انif ضاءَshines بدرٌa full moon
ويمحوand effaces الظُلمةَthe darkness الصُبحُthe dawn الضويُّthe radiant
And stars grow faint when a full moon shines,
The stars fade if the moon glows
And radiant dawn wipes away the darkness.
And the brilliant dawn eliminates the darkness
فماfor no خَبَرٌreport كخُبرٍlike knowledge عنfrom عِيانٍdirect observation
واينَand where الوهمُillusion والحقُّand the truth الجليُّthe manifest
For a report is not like knowledge from direct observation,
No news like eyewitness news
And how can illusion compare with manifest truth?
Where is illusion and where is the evident truth?
فكمfor how many منof دِمنةٍa ruined campsite ادهتbrought calamity بسارٍupon a night traveler
وكانَand was دَهاءَهُhis undoing العقلthe mind الغبيُّthe foolish
For many a ruined campsite has brought a night traveler to grief,
How many a leader was misguided by good fortune
And his foolish mind was his undoing.
Yet his foolishness was the stupid wisdom
اذاif ماindeed لمnot يكنthere is للمَرءِfor a man فَهمٌunderstanding
ذكيٌّkeen ماnot لهُhe has فِعلٌa deed زكيُّvirtuous
If indeed a man lacks understanding
When a man lacks understanding
That is keen, he has no virtuous deed.
However intelligent, his actions lack wisdom
فأَشرَفُso the noblest ماwhat يُرامُis sought لكلfor every مَرءٍman
ذَكاءُkeenness العقلof mind والذِكرُand renown الذكيُّthe fragrant
So the noblest thing sought for every man
The utmost sought by every man
Is keenness of mind and fragrant renown.
Is the mind's insight and the wise remembrance
وافضلُand the best ماwhat يُرَىis seen فيin كلevery نوعٍkind

And the finest thing seen in every kind
The best quality in every being
Is good manners and a modest countenance.
Is manners and the revered demeanor

And humankind's finest adornments, without need for deliberation,
The finest adornment of people, without doubt
Are the emblem of virtue and unsullied honor.
Is the raiment of virtue and the untainted honor

And the ugliest thing in a conceited man
The ugliest in one arrogant
Is shameful conduct and base suspicion.
Is the despised action and corrupt assumption

And your mind, O cherished sheikh,
Your intellect, O honored Sheikh
Is self-made, and your conduct is extraordinary.
Is resolute, and your deed ingenious

فبينهماfor between them اشتِقاقٌa derivation مَعنَويُّsemantic
So how wondrous is Muhammad in name and deed!
O Muhammad, in name and deed
For a derivation in meaning links the two.
Between them lies meaningful derivation
علوتَyou rose مَكانةًin station وسَمَوتَand you soared قَدراًin worth

You have risen in station and soared in worth,
You have risen in status and ascended in worth
And Ali is the foundation of your exaltation's edifice.
The foundation of your eminence is Ali
