And whoever hopes for God's pardon until

    presumption inclines him toward wrongdoing,

will soon fall into the hands of the Lord's justice,

which then delivers him to the sword of judgment.

So lean neither to the right nor to the left,

and stand between fear and hope.

For one who embraces extremes is ill-spoken of,

while one who keeps the middle is praised for his splendor.

Imagine a ladder on which appear the

    powers, between descent and ascent.

So when you despair, ascend with hope,

and when you grow presumptuous, descend with reverent fear.
