ياO مَنthose who مَضَواthey went forth ونَجَواand they escaped منfrom لُجِّdeep waters عالَمِهِمtheir world
يا مَن مَضَوا ونَجَوا من لُجِّ عالَمِهِم
لكنbut إلىto أرضland مُحييgiver of life to الرُوحِthe spirit ماnot انطَلَقواthey set out
لكن إلى أرض مُحيي الرُوحِ ما انطَلَقوا
O those who have gone forth and escaped their world's deep waters,
O you who have passed on and escaped from the depths of their world
Yet have not set out for the land of the one who gives life to the spirit.
Yet to the land of the Reviver of Souls they did not set forth
انif لمnot تطأtread تلكمُthose الأمصارَthe cities ارجُلُكمyour feet
ان لم تطأ تلكمُ الأمصارَ ارجُلُكم
لاdo not تأمنواyou feel safe from غَرَقَdrowning المِيناthe harbor ولاand do not تَثِقواyou trust
لا تأمنوا غَرَقَ المِينا ولا تَثِقوا
If your feet have not trodden those cities,
If your feet do not tread those countries
Do not feel safe from drowning in the harbor, nor be confident.
Do not feel safe from the shipwreck of harbors, nor be complacent
قدmay يَسلَمُsurvives الفُلكthe ship فيin لُجّdeep waters البحورthe seas وقدand may
قد يَسلَمُ الفُلك في لُجّ البحور وقد
يُصِيبُهُbefalls it عندamid أَمنsafety الساحلِthe shore الغَرَقُsinking
يُصِيبُهُ عند أَمن الساحلِ الغَرَقُ
The ship may survive in the depths of the seas, yet
For a ship may survive the sea’s tempest yet
Sinking may befall it amid the safety of the shore.
Perish from drowning at the shore of safety’s calm
فرُبَّfor many a قومٍpeople نَجواthey survived فيin الخوفِfear إذbecause سَهِرواthey kept vigil
فرُبَّ قومٍ نَجوا في الخوفِ إذ سَهِروا
وفيand at ذُرَىheights الأَمنsafety لماwhen إِنemphatic particle غَفَواthey dozed off سُرِقواthey were robbed
وفي ذُرَى الأَمن لما إِن غَفَوا سُرِقوا
For many people survived amid fear because they kept vigil,
So many a people were saved when vigilant in danger
And at the heights of safety, they were robbed when they dozed off.
But robbed in broad daylight when tranquil and asleep
