الشيخُthe sheikh صقرُSaqr الخازنيal-Khazini قدindeed مَضَىpassed away
الشيخُ صقرُ الخازني قد مَضَى
ماnot كانhe was الاexcept صقرa falcon عينthe eye of العِدَىthe foes
ما كان الا صقر عين العِدَى
Sheikh Saqr al-Khazini has passed away.
He was none but a falcon preying on his foes’ eyes.
صقرٌa falcon هيit العنقاءُthe phoenix منfrom دونهِbeneath him
صقرٌ هي العنقاءُ من دونهِ
قدindeed صادهُcaught him الدهرُTime بشِصّwith the fishhook of الودىdeath
قد صادهُ الدهرُ بشِصّ الودى
A falcon beneath whom even the phoenix stood.
Time has caught him with death’s fishhook.
فقلتso I said للدهرto Time بتاريخهِin his chronogram
فقلت للدهر بتاريخهِ
تصيدُyou catch صقراًa falcon فيin شراكthe snares of الرَدَىdeath
تصيدُ صقراً في شراك الرَدَى
So I said to Time, in his chronogram:
You catch a falcon in the snares of death.
