How long will you persist in shameful deeds,

when life's sun has inclined toward its setting?

And why do you roam, driven by a longing to play at youth,

strutting in the fine new robe of your worldly life?

And the hand of days has already traced a line

upon your temple, since the streaks of gray appeared.

Its letters say, through their silent testimony:

Enough of these transgressions and sins!

The time to depart has surely come; be resolute,

    discerning and ready for departure.

And prepare what will one day quench your thirst,

or else you will melt from the heat of exhaustion.

And please God, so you may attain what we hope for

at that just and fearsome place of judgment.

    And humbly lift your mind

and heart toward the All-Knower of the unseen.

For raising hands is of no avail

if the hands of hearts do not rise.

Resolve upon repentance without any flaw,

and trust in the One, the Unique, who answers.

You will gain pardon without doubt, if you do not

    harbor doubt when you hope.

By your life, we own nothing on earth,

and everyone lives the life of a stranger.

But our possession is the kingdom of a Lord

splendid in rule, a Judge who rewards.

One day, death will overtake us on earth,

and soon we shall be removed from its courtyard.

We imagine honor lies in status and wealth,

and that pride lies in noble lineage.

So what use is wealth without righteousness?

And what use is ancestry with flaws?
