Quell a clash: you are the span of its arena—

bitter strife without an Indian-steel sword or spearhead.

How many a thrust you bear from these battles

has pierced you without a thrusting weapon!

For the soul and the impetuous body, both,

    remain at war, without safety.

Two opposites will not agree to peace

    ever—and can two opposites agree?

O you who undertake to make peace between foes,

reconcile them both: perhaps they will make peace.

For Jesus has conveyed his Gospel to us,

in what he brought with truth and proof:

"Blessed are the makers of peace, for they

are my sons, within my protection and my gardens."

So beware of them both as long as you live, for they

are water and fire, which do not come together.

    لم تَبرَحا بالعُنفِ تجتذبانِ

    Thus I have become bewildered between them;

they have not ceased tugging at me violently.

So I am like Jacob, between Ra-

chel and Leah, the two daughters of Laban.
