إذا رُمتَ الصُعودَ إلى عَلاءٍ

إذا رُمتَ الصُعودَ إلى عَلاءٍ

فثِب دَرَج الفضائل فَهيَ مَرقى

فثِب دَرَج الفضائل فَهيَ مَرقى

If you seek to rise to lofty heights,

If you seek to ascend to lofty heights

then leap up the steps of the virtues, for they are a stairway.

Climb the stairs of virtues, for they are the path

وان رُمتَ الرُقِيَّ بلا مَراقٍ

وان رُمتَ الرُقِيَّ بلا مَراقٍ

وأَيمُ اللَهِ إِنَّكَ لَستَ تَرقى

وأَيمُ اللَهِ إِنَّكَ لَستَ تَرقى

And if you seek ascent without steps,

And if you seek to rise without steps

and, by God, you surely will not ascend.

By Allah! You will not ascend

وان شئتَ الرَشادَ بغيرِ هادٍ

وان شئتَ الرَشادَ بغيرِ هادٍ

نَصُوحٍ تِهتَ غَرباً ثُمَّ شَرقا

نَصُوحٍ تِهتَ غَرباً ثُمَّ شَرقا

And if you wish for right guidance without a guide

And if you want guidance without a guide

sincere in counsel, you will stray westward, then eastward.

Sincere advice - you will go astray, west and east
