أحتَّامَuntil when? تصبوyou yearn للتصابيfor youthful dalliance وتَهزِلُand jest
وتنموand grow بهِthrough it والنفسُand the soul بالهزلِthrough jesting تُهزَلُis made lean
How long will you yearn for youthful dalliance and jest,
You yearn for the gazelles and jest with them,
And flourish through it, while jesting makes the soul grow lean?
And flourish with them while the soul is made gentle by jesting.
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle غَشِيتَyou indulge in الفُحشَindecency والعارand disgrace ياO فتىyoung man
عَجِبتُI marvel لأرضٍat the earth أَنَّهاthat it لاdoes not تَزَلزَلُquake
Whenever you indulge in indecency and disgrace, young man,
If you are laden with vileness and shame, O youth,
I marvel that the earth does not quake.
I marvel that the ground does not quake.
اياO باذلاًsquandering ثوبَthe robe التُقىof piety بتغزُّلٍthrough flirtation
إلىuntil كمhow long بهِthrough it نسجَthe fabric العَفافةِof chastity تَبذُلُyou squander
O you who squander the robe of piety through flirtation,
O you who waste the garment of piety in amorous sport,
How long will you squander the fabric of chastity through it?
To what end does modesty expend itself for you?
فانfor indeed جزيلgenerous الفِعلthe deed جَزلاًbountiful وناضراًand flourishing
جَزاؤُكَyour reward أَيمُI swear by اللَهِGod ياO خِلُّfriend أَجزَلmore bountiful
For a generous deed, bountiful and flourishing,
For ample deed with bounty and brightness,
Your reward, by God, O friend, is more bountiful still.
Your reward, by the life of God, O boon companion, is most ample.
فانfor if كانis غَرَّارُthe deceiver التغزُّلِof flirtation عَقرَباًa scorpion
يُريدُhe seeks بهِwith it لَسبيto sting me فانّيَthen I am أَعزَلُunarmed
For if the deceitful flirt is a scorpion,
If the deceit of amorous sport is a scorpion,
Seeking to sting me with it, then I am unarmed.
Intending mischief thereby to my people, then I abandon it.
فلاso no بُدَّescape ليfor me ياO قومpeople أَنthat أَنزِلَI descend الثَرَىthe dust
ولوand even if كانwas ليfor me فوقَabove السِمَاكَينِthe two Simāk stars مَنزِلُa dwelling
So I must, O people, descend to the dust,
I must, O people, descend into the dust,
Even if I had a dwelling above the two Simāk stars.
Though I had above the two skies a dwelling,
إذاif لمnot تُفِدناbenefit us البِيضُwhite swords والسُمرand brown spears فيin الوغىbattle
فخيرٌthen better لناfor us منهاthan them عِصِيٌّsticks ومِغزَلُand a spindle
If white swords and brown spears do not aid us in battle,
If the white and the dark bring us no succor in the fray,
Then sticks and a spindle are better for us than these.
Then a stick and a spindle are better for us than they.
قبيحٌshameful بشِيبِfor gray-haired men انif صَبَواthey yearn لتغازُلٍfor flirtation
واقبحand more shameful منهمthan them راهبٌa monk متغزّلflirtatious
It is shameful if gray-haired men yearn for flirtation,
Foul in old age if the white-haired toy with love making,
And more shameful than they is a flirtatious monk.
And fouler than they is the cloistered monk turned amorous!
