إنindeed الونيَّةَindolence موتُthe death of العزمِresolve كمhow many دَفَنَتit has buried
إن الونيَّةَ موتُ العزمِ كم دَفَنَت
حيّاًalive منfrom among الناسpeople فيin قبرٍa grave منof الكَسَلِsloth
حيّاً من الناس في قبرٍ من الكَسَلِ
Indeed, indolence is the death of resolve—how many it has buried
Procrastination is the death of resolve, it has buried
Alive, from among humankind, in a grave of sloth!
Many alive in a grave of laziness.
كمhow many غادَرَتit has left ذاone possessing نشاطٍvigor لاno حَراكَmovement بهِin him
كم غادَرَت ذا نشاطٍ لا حَراكَ بهِ
وكمand how often وكمand how often فتكتit struck fatally فيat فارسٍa knight بَطَلِheroic
وكم وكم فتكت في فارسٍ بَطَلِ
How many vigorous people it has left motionless!
How many left full of vigor without any movement,
And how often, how often it has struck down a heroic knight!
And how many times did it destroy a brave knight.
لمdid not ينجُescape منfrom ميتةٍa death وانٍan indolent person مؤَبَّدةٍeverlasting
لم ينجُ من ميتةٍ وانٍ مؤَبَّدةٍ
ولوand even if حمتهُthey protected him رُماةٌarchers منfrom بنيthe sons of ثُغَلِThughal
ولو حمتهُ رُماةٌ من بني ثُغَلِ
No sluggard has escaped everlasting death,
None can escape an eternal death of weakness,
Even if archers from Banu Thughal protected him.
Even if protected by archers from the tribe of Thughal.
فجِدَّso strive earnestly ياO راهباًmonk بالسيرِin journeying مجتهداًstriving diligently
فجِدَّ يا راهباً بالسيرِ مجتهداً
منfrom قبلِbefore تَبلُغَyou reach يوماًone day مُنتَهىthe end of الأَجَلِthe allotted lifespan
من قبلِ تَبلُغَ يوماً مُنتَهى الأَجَلِ
So strive earnestly, O monk, diligent in your journey,
So strive, o monk, persevering in conduct
Before you one day reach the end of your allotted life.
Before you one day reach the end of your life.
وابغِand seek الكَمالَperfection بماin whatever تنحوهُyou pursue it منof عَمَلٍwork
وابغِ الكَمالَ بما تنحوهُ من عَمَلٍ
انindeed الكَمالَperfection يُرَىis seen فيin كالمunclear; probably 'complete' العَمَلِthe work
ان الكَمالَ يُرَى في كالم العَمَلِ
And seek perfection in whatever work you pursue;
Seek perfection in whatever work you undertake,
Indeed, perfection is seen in [complete?] work.
For perfection is seen in the work of deeds.
وانكِرand reject لُبانةَthe craving of نفسٍa soul فيكwithin you ذاتِpossessing هَوىًdesire
وانكِر لُبانةَ نفسٍ فيك ذاتِ هَوىً
لِلَذَّةٍfor a pleasure خِلتُهاI deemed it كالسَمّlike poison فيin العَسَلِhoney
لِلَذَّةٍ خِلتُها كالسَمّ في العَسَلِ
And reject the craving of the soul within you that yearns
And reject the cravings of a selfish soul within you
For a pleasure I deemed like poison in honey.
Whose pleasure is like poison in honey.
ومِلand incline إلىtoward كلّevery مَرءٍperson لاnot يميلhe inclines إلىtoward
ومِل إلى كلّ مَرءٍ لا يميل إلى
مَحَبَّةِlove of الذاتِthe self واصحَبهُand keep his company بلاwithout دَخَلِguile
مَحَبَّةِ الذاتِ واصحَبهُ بلا دَخَلِ
And incline toward every person who does not incline toward
And incline towards every person who does not incline
Self-love, and keep his company without guile.
Towards self-love, and accompany him without reserve.
وعَوِّلَنَّand surely rely عليهِon him إذfor أَضلَّhas lost هُدىًguidance
وعَوِّلَنَّ عليهِ إذ أَضلَّ هُدىً
منwhoever لاnot يعوّلُrelies فيin الدُنياthis world علىon رَجُلِa man
من لا يعوّلُ في الدُنيا على رَجُلِ
And rely firmly on him, for he has lost guidance
And rely on Him when he loses guidance,
Who relies on no man in this world.
On Him who relies on no man in this world.
