ياO فاتراًlukewarm one فُقِدَتhas been lost منهُfrom him حَرارتُهhis warmth
كمhow many فاترينَlukewarm people علىover طُولthe length of المَدىtime هَلَكُواhave perished
O lukewarm one, whose warmth has been lost,
How many lukewarm souls have perished through the ages!

Had you not been zealous in hateful disputation,
No rank stench from your conduct would have spread among humankind.
سَدِكتَyou clung fast إِثماًto sin بكلwith all الجُهدِmight محترساًkeeping guard
وفيand in الونيَّةsloth انتyou المُولَعُthe infatuated one السَدِكُthe one who clings fast
You have clung to sin, keeping guard with all your might,
And with sloth you are infatuated, clinging fast.
كمhow many راكدينَidle people احتمتgrew warm اوصالُهمtheir limbs فَعَدَواand so they ran

وراكضينَand runners عَيُواgrew weary سيراًfrom traveling فماyet did not بَرَكواsink down
How many idle people grew warm in their limbs and ran,
And how many runners wearied on the way, yet did not sink down!

Those endowed with love have melted, not congealed,
For they have been smelted in the heat of love for God.
كنbe كالسُلَيكlike al-Sulayk بنهجalong the path of الحُبِّlove مبتدراًhastening

Be like al-Sulayk, hastening along the path of love,
And you will catch up with those who have traveled the way of truth.

اوor كالنَعامةِlike the ostrich لمwould not يُنصَبbe set لكfor you الشَرَكthe snare
Were you like the eagle, you would not be caught in a hunting net,
Or like the ostrich, no snare would be set for you.

O you who resemble the two-lived creature, making its home
On land and sea, and preying savagely in both places!

O ashen-colored one, neither dazzling, pure white,
Plainly pure, nor dark and pitch-black!
قدindeed لاحَhe has appeared للعينto the eye كالخِيلانِlike the merfolk لاnot شَرسٌfierce

فيستقالَso as to be shunned ولاnor أُنسٌtame فيُمتَلَكُso as to be owned
To the eye he appears like the merfolk, neither fierce
Enough to be shunned, nor tame enough to be owned.

Rather, half of him is human, pleasing in appearance,
And half of him a beast of prey, murderous by nature.

Thus, like the beasts, he grazes on grass upon the earth,
And in the seas he joins the fish.

And of him the wise have spoken a proverb
That made his nature plain: “Neither flesh nor fish.”
