يا سيدي عشت لي وبعدي

وفي كبد المفجوع ما الله عالم

ما لي أرى حبس الحمراء في نكد
I see beauty in the poems of many tongues
قد غبت أمس كما يغيب الفرقد
You're lost like stars at dawn
ولي لعهد كبدر منير
A guardian of a dawn-bright covenant
أيا من طبق الآفاق ذكرا
I gazed upon the horizon, recalling Your name
أراك لكل بليد كسهم
I see you as an arrow to every unwise one
شقوا البحيرة سبحا من بسبحهم
They cleaved the lake swimming with their swimming
فمن كأس تطوف بها سقاة
From a cup passed around by servers
كما شئت مر فالدهر ممتثل أمرا
As you wish, so time will obey
رب قد أعطيتناه
O Lord, You have given him to us
قد نراه جالسا منكمشا
We may see him sitting hunched up small
سألتهم من الذي
I asked them who resembles
شبهت منطقه من فوق لحيته
His reasoning from above his beard
قل لمن مروا علينا
Tell those who passed by us
كم ليلة وليلة
How many nights and nights
وبين يديه تلميذ صغير
A small student before him
عبد ببابك خده قد عفرا
A slave at Your door, his cheek made dusty
عجبت لسرعته في الكلام

نلت عطفي وحناني

من كليلى في الصبايا

أتتني من المولى الجليل هدية
A gift came to me from the Exalted Lord
صدعنا مذ كان ناعم خد
He captivated us since he was soft-cheeked
يا رب غربة بتها
O Lord, I am a stranger in exile
نظرت بلحظ بالقلوب لعوب
She glanced with a look that set hearts aflutter
ألله أعلم ما السبب
God knows best what the reason was
حيثما سرت فالمعالي تسير
Wherever you went, glory went with you
هو الطيب الأخلاق والإسم والذكر
He is of good character, name and mention
شعراء مغربنا وأنت إمامهم
Our poets of the Maghreb, and you are their imam
بنت إسرافيل رفقا بالبشر
O Israfil's daughter, have mercy on mankind
بنفسي شقيق الروح حيا بزهرة
With my own soul, the kindred spirit greeted
قال البيان لمن أراد مديحه

ضنت بهذا اليوم قبل عصور

أهلا بجرح ليته يتكرر

للأرض شهب كالسما لا يرتجي
The earth has shooting stars like the sky that do not expect
إلى العالم الفرد الذي عز نده
To the peerless individual whose pride
أرى مستقيم الطرف ما الطرف أمكم
Lean of glance what glance is it of yours
أكتم مابي لو يدوم التكتم
I conceal what is within me were concealment to last
سل الفضل أهل الفضل قدما ولا تسل
Ask for favors from the noble
أخرجني مفضل
Mufaddal led me away
دعوني فإني لا أطيق التكلما
Leave me be, for I cannot bear to speak,
لقد طغى بصحة في جسمه
He was overwhelmed with health in his body,
يا زينة الحمراء بل
O beauty of the red, nay
يا طيب الإسم والأفعال والشيم
O you of good name, deeds, traits
أنا من اسمى نعيمه
I am one who is named Na'eemah
أضحى الفؤاد متيما
My heart has become an orphan
أراد أن يحظى مفضل بما
Mufaddal wished to gain what would
أمري إلى المولى العلي الشان
My complaint to the Exalted Master
في ذمة المولى العلى الشان
In the care of the Most High Lord
بمقرطق قلبي تعلق ليت لي
With a green-eyed one my heart is attached, if only
تجلت معاني الطعن من قدك اللدن
The meanings of reproach were revealed by your constant kindness,
وشادن من بني النصارى
A branch from the children of Christians
حبيت بظبي يصول بحسن
I love a graceful deer who injures me
قالوا تحب محمدا ومحمد
They said you love Muhammad and Muhammad
ليس مثل حبيبة في الحسان
None can compare to my beloved in charm
إن ذا رسم عجيب
This is a wondrous drawing
يا لذة الحلم في إغفاءة الوسن
O the bliss of dreaming in the slumber of youth
لله يوم حفه عيدان
A day for Allah, adorned with festivals,
من رام تفريقا لإخوان صفوا
He who seeks to divide true friends
أحيت بطلعتها لبرء ثان
With her rising she revived a desolate desert
يا واصلا لبيني
Oh companion reaching my essence
لم يكن لي من المدام نصيب
I had no share of wine
طنجة تيهي دلالا
Tangier has lost its way
وخل أتى التدخين زهوا ونشوة
A khil came to smoking in delight and ecstasy
توسط بيننا زهرا نضيرا
A flower bloomed between us, fresh and bright
دعنى من ذكر حداة الأينق
Let me forget the memory of the slender beauties
قالوا تزوج فلان وهو في
They said so-and-so got married while his heart belonged to another whom he loved
قالوا الحقيقة والحقيقة
They said the truth and the truth
أشرقت أنفسنا في ليلة
Our souls shone in the night
إن كان لا بد من غبوق
If evenings of companionship
بأيديهم لعبوا بالورق

إن تعيشي فإننا سنعيش

سبى قلبي جمال الظبي فينا

دعاني من ذكر السقام دعانيا

أجيباني عن الموضوع فيما

قل لمن بالرسم حلى صدره

إن ذا فصل الخطاب

ترسل النكتة اللطيفة سهما

رجعت لنفسي فاتهمت حصاتي

وحقك يا منيتي ما أحب
By your truth, my wish
ثلاث شهور بل ثلاث دهور
Three months, nay three eras
إبتسم فالحياة تبدي ابتساما
Smile, for life shows a smile
وكم أرتجي ألا يدوم ملازمي
How I wish this companion of mine would not last,
يا دار نلت العز والتكريما
O home, you have attained honor and dignity,
هذه جنة وذا رضوان
This is Paradise, this is Ridwan
قد أصمتنا بصوت
Her voice has deafened us,
يا من بدرهم مكسه مغرور
O you who with a dirham is deceived and vain
إن عدت عاد إلى النفوس سرور
If you return, joy returns to souls,
إذا كانت على هدي تسير

قلت يوما لرفاقي

My feet, you have lived no life for me
لله أيام مع الأحباب
Allah has days with loved ones
ألا أيها الأقوام إن طعامكم
O people, your food is in danger
ذكروا ذا الكلب في مراكش
They reminded the dog in Marrakesh
يا جلال العصر علما
O majesty of the age in knowledge
هل أقبل الربيع في ازدهار
Has spring arrived in blooming
يا خير من في عصره
O best of those in his time
يا أيها الآسي يجول بمبضع
O you who roam with a crutch
سائلي عنه وعن سيرته
Ask me about him, and about his character
إذا ذكر التهامي في البرايا
When the beloved is mentioned in the wilderness
يا أيها القائد والشهم الذي
O leader and valiant one who
جيفة كن ولعر
Be a corpse, and endure
غبت عني فكدت شوقا أذوب
You were away from me, and I almost melted with yearning
ألشمس من ألم النوى مصفرة
The sun, jaundiced from the pain of parting
لله في مراكش قبر به
God has a grave in Marrakesh
ما كانت أبزو بلدة مذكورة
Abuzza was not a well-known town
كلما تهت دلالا
Whenever you turn away, beloved
وبعد الليل ينبلج الصباح
With time, wounds start to heal
قالوا المعري كافر
They said al-Ma'arri is an unbeliever
محمد فاضل الشنقيطي قد

هم المعذبون في الأرض

هو رزء ولا أقول عظيم

طال مني لذا النهار ارتقابي

كما قلتم روض المعالي به خصب

رب الندى والهدى والفضل والحسب
My Lord of blessings and guidance, merit and nobility
رأيت بعيني نجم الثريا
With my eyes I saw the Pleiades star
أنا ليلى التونسيه
I am Layla the Tunisian
تجرد من أثوابه الرشأ الذي
The youth who caused my heart such anguish when he was stripped of his robes,

ما باله بيننا يقوى تمطقه
His speech between us strengthens though he drank no wine,
مفضل بالرغم من خواه
Though favored despite his ignorance
سجنت نفسي بيدي
I imprisoned myself with my own hands
نعم حصحص الحق وانكشفا
Yes, the truth has been verified and uncovered
عمر اسمي غير أني
My name is Omar, though who I am
إذا كان هذا كذا فبما
If this was thus, with what
لذكره صاح فخر
His remembrance a goblet of pride
في البرايا ند فخر وعلا
In the wilderness we take pride and elevation
فتاحة تأخذها وتفتح
A key that you take and open
صنعة الشعر لقد عافتك
The art of poetry, leave me be
في البرايا كالتهامي
In the deserts, like lost dreams
فتحت في روضها
A flower has bloomed in her garden
صلى على محمد ربه
His Lord prayed upon Muhammad
أتينا على البشا التهامي على شوق
We came to the exalted one yearning with desire
أسفري عن طلعة إن تسفري
Dawn, if you would dawn, your dawn
أودع في فاس أعز عشيرة
I bid farewell in Fez to a most beloved clan,
ما لمراكش تفيض سرورا
What makes Marrakesh overflow with joy,
لسانكم بالفخر دوما يردد
Your tongues are always repeating pride,
يا من تكفل لمن دعاه
O You who guaranteed to fulfill the wish
انظر مغنية العجائز إذ شدت
Behold the old women’s singer as she sang
أجدت القول فينا يا بشير
You have expressed truthfully, O Bearer of Good News,
متى أخدرت إلا الأسود الضراغم
When were the lions saddled except those grieving?
يا حسرتي يا حسرتي
Oh my sorrow, oh my grief
يضوع ند الألسن الهمام
The talk of the noble tongues abates,
بمقدمك الحمراء قد عبقت عطرا
With your auspicious arrival, redolent with fragrance
الويل ثم الويل للبياز
Woe, then woe to Al-Bayyaz (the dismissed one)
أنت قل لي بم تدعى
Tell me what you are called,
لا تعاتبني فلا عتب علي

وجمرة الوجنة ذاب
The embers of passion with
ألا دمت يا دار ودام لك الجد

رتب العز وعز الرتب

هو العلم لم يدرك بغير تعلم
Knowledge cannot be attained without learning
عفوا إذا أكثرت من إنشادي
Forgive me if I recite too often
قالوا تزوج فلان ولقد
They said so-and-so got married, but
طلع الحسن من جبينك شمسا
Beauty has risen like the sun from your forehead,
وأبيض بلورى لون تخاله
My crystal white complexion resembles
نعم إنا نمثلهم جميعا
Yes indeed we represent them all
الزكيات شاعر الزهراء
The purities - poet of the radiant one
ثلاث سنين مكثت بها
For three years I lived there
سلام على قاضي النزاهة والعدل
Greetings to the just and equitable judge
هنيئا بأمس الأمس إذ ضاع لي حقي
Congratulations on yesterday's loss when my right was wasted
عدوة القوم بل عدوة الله
Not the people's enmity, but God's enmity,
عهدي ببيت القدس وهو مقدس
My covenant with Bayt al-Maqdis, it being sanctified
دام بقاؤك لنا
May your existence remain for us
به أهلا من حوار
With greetings to those with
أيها القائد المفدى بروحي
O my leader, ransomed with my soul
كثر الله زمرة الأغبياء
God multiplied the throng of fools,
شيخ الشباب اليوسفي
The leader of youth, Yusufi
يا له حبا اتحد
O what a love that is united
أدام الله أيام الخليفه
May Allah prolong the days of the Caliph,
ألم به الوشي فأعرض هازئا

بين هذي الربوع أسكب دمعي

فاروق لا تتخذ إسما تخالفه

كلانا طالب للعلم ساع

خليفة عيسى مع سليل محمد
The caliph Jesus with Muhammad's progeny
الشبل قد تبع الأسود وقد غدا
The cub has followed the lions, and has become
حكموا ثم حكموا في رقاب

أتى بازدياد البشير البشير
The harbinger came with good tidings
ولك العزا فيما مضى
The glory is yours for what has passed
أتيت بإذن أم أتيت بلا إذن

لامو عليه يظهرون نصيحة
They feign advice for him, though Allah knows
أسدل الشعر هالة للجبين
My hair cascades like a halo around my forehead
إن للبياز ذكرا
The peddler has shameful deeds
رأيتها وهى في سيارة السفر
I saw her in a traveling car
ليس من كربة وغصة نفس
No grief nor anguish of soul befalls
الطالبون واتصل
The students graduated, and the loved ones united with their loved ones,
يا رعى الله إخوة كرموني
O God bless the brothers who honored me
هو يوم وما أبرئ نفسي
It is a day when I do not absolve myself
ما بال عينيه قد التقيتا
Why have his eyes met
أتركوه يهذي فإن كلامه

بحقكم في مهجتي راقبوا الربا
By your rights in my conscience, monitor intoxication
بلبل الأفراح غنى
The joyful nightingale sang
زارني ممرضي فلم يرمني
My nurses came to visit, but could not find me
خل استافيسكي ومن من بعده ظهروا
Leave Dreyfus and those who appeared after him
تبدت نجوم الفن في أفق الغرب
The stars of art shone on the horizon of the West,
وكلما أبصرت عيناك ذا لقب

وأحبه ويحبني رغم العدا

يوم بحلوان نقضيه على ظمإ
A day we spend quenching thirst,
وعليكم مني السلام ولكن
Peace be upon you, but
كأس الخطوب بذا العدو دهاق
The cup of sorrows boils with enemies
قد أثرتم لواعجا وشجونا
You have stirred intense emotions and passions
بأي لسان في المحافل أخطب
With what tongue in gatherings shall I speak,
سألوني عن البياز وقالوا
They asked me about the grocer and said
ليس في الناس من مصاب عظيم
No greater affliction among men,
سقيت بكأس للمنون دهاق
I gave a cup to the afflicted ones in grief
بعودتك الحمراء تم لها القصد
With your red return, it was intended for her
شفيعي إليك التاج كلل من شعر
My intercessor to you is the crown, adorned with hair
سال بالسحر منك خير يراع
The charm of your goodness allures me at dawn
إذا جئتم نقوم لكم حفاة
If you come, we will stand up for you barefoot
أحس به عني قليلا تغيرا
I sense in him some change however slight,
تأخرت عن صوغ القريض له قصدا
I delayed composing poetry for him intentionally
بلابل من مرمر نحتت

رام الفخار يا لها من مسخره

من ذا الذي لا يستجيب إذا دعي

أمسوا يمر الذكر منك بمجلس
Yesterday they came and memories of you passed like
بدون اجتهاد لا يكون التعلم
Without striving, there is no learning

I seek refuge in God from the turmoil of politics,
في بذلة النوم قد تبدى
In the humiliation of sleep appeared,
ما كنت أعرف ما الهوى حتى اتى
I had not known what passion was until it came
فإن كنت في هدي الأئمة راغبا
If you desire to follow the guidance of the imams
بعد التطلع لي بعيد ندائي
After longing for my distant call
مثل التهامي ما في الأرض من بطل
Like heroes on earth, there is no equal
حججنا لعمري ابتغاء الثواب
Our pilgrimage was to seek reward,
أرى الشهد يجنيه لي الذل علقما
I see the honey that humiliation gathers for me,
ضاءتا كالفرقدين
They shine like two planets
حذرته لو ينفع التحذير
I warned him, though warning is useless,
يا رئيسا نخاله مرؤوسا
O president, your subordinates despise you
ألا فاسمعا لي ما أعيد وما أبدي
Listen to what I repeat and initiate
يابن عبد السلام بالطرف رفقا
O son of Abdus Salam, gently move your eyes,
صدعت بحبه من بعد كتمي
I confided in him after my silence,
كما قلتم والله ليس له ند
As you have said, by God he has no equal
حرام على حر الطبيعة والفكر
It is forbidden for the free spirit and mind

عرفت مقام القوم إذ بت تجهد
شرط العظيم وصفه بالمهتدي
إن كان في كل أرض ما تشان به
وأعجب شيء سمعنا به
لا تلمه إن يبد منه صدود
ومن عجب قد قلدوك مهندا
خل القلوب كآبة تتقطع
لكل امرئ من دهره ما تعودا
وأنصتوا لرأسه
جويهرة القلب لا تغضبي
إن تشا تحيى سعيدا
ردد الأنغام فينا المطرب
عتبت على علق اليهود لماله
من كان ينوي فيك مصر بأنه
قال ما للسواد لبسك أضحى
ملامكما كفا فقد قضي الأمر
حي الشباب وحي فيه الشورى
أنا أدعى بالتطيرا

لئن حبسوا جسمي بجدران سجنهم
زارت ضيوف النيل منا المغربا

الكأس من دون المدامة أكبر
قد سمعت الرثاء نظما ونثرا
عجبت لهم طافوا به بعدما التحى
واسمحي أن نرى بوجهك بدرا
لسانى سباق وعرضك قابل

ذا اليوم تحسد مجده الأيام
حي في المنهل الزلال ارتشافه
كما قلتم لن يرتضي السلم مجرم
حي فيها الإخلاص ولاإقداما

أرأيت الرذائل الناطقات
ادفنوها بحقكم مع رفاتي
أنا صب متيم ما حييت
رئيس المجلس العلمي توفي
بهبركل قلبي تعلق ليت لي
يغادر مراكشا فرج
قيل ما بالنا نتيه سرورا
قولا لساق قسا عنا فيتركها
لا مصاب في هذه الدنياء
أنت ماذا دهاك قل لي حتى
صيف الصويرة كالشتاء بغيرها
مقدم القائد الأعز نظيرا
أرسم حبيبي زدت قلبي تشوقا
تربعت عرش الشعر في نظر الحق
خليفة عيسى في الشفاء من الضر
أينما كنت كنت رمز الكمال
تهنئتي للبائيه
يا رحى الطحن استريحي
تبت من توبتي فهات اسقنيها
أودع في حبي الحياة فلم يعد
أتاني بالذي أهوى البشير
خضوعا ومثلي بالخضوع أخو فخر
أأماري في علمه أماري
يا حليف الندى المفدى هنيئا
يا أيها البحر الذي
قرنفلة حمراء أهدى ابن سودة
ليس مصر وطنا لي
أأحبس في الضنى عشرين يوما
لم أستمع لشكاية من شاك

عليك من الخل الوفي سلامه
لله يومان تحكي غمض أجفان
قدك يا جميل
يا ظبية مازلت أتبع ظلها

أتى محلل دم مفضلا

يقولون المعري ملحد بل
فضلك لا أنساه
الله بالذكر الجميل حباه
لك الله من رسم على الفضل محتو
برزت كما شاء الهوى لذوي الهوى
نعيت نفسي إليه
إذا رمت الجمال العبقريا
تشبه بالتيس ابن زعقان بعدما
رعى الله أيام الصبا واللياليا
هل من اذن في كلمة بالتحية
عجبت لبعض بني آدم
إن تسل يا شيخ عني
نعم نعم خير موضوع سمعت به
أيا عمر تمعن في الجواب
أعبد اللطيف أجب عمرا
وما بها درست
درست الفقه علما والأصولا
وما على هذا النمط
قد بدا لما بدا
شخص له عجائب لا تحصر
فينا نبيل سيد
بإيابك الميمون أشرق نور
