1. I warned him, though warning is useless,
Thus does the deluded reap adversity.
١. حذَّرتُه لو يَنفَعُ التَّحذيرُ
لكن كذا يَجني الرُّدى مَغرُورُ
2. Thus do the wicked meet their punishment,
Thus does time bring ruin on the unjust.
٢. وكذا يُلاقي الآثمونَ جزاءهُم
وكذا على الباغي الزَّمانُ يَدورُ
3. He was insolent as history records none other,
Insolence which the overwhelmed comes to rue.
٣. وبَغَى وما التَّاريخُ يَحفَظُ مِثلَه
بَغياً يُلاقي ويلَهُ المَغمورُ
4. We all lived in security, each of us
In his flock, and life was verdant.
٤. كنَّا وكانَ الكُلُّ مِنَّا آمِناً
في سِربِه والعَيشُ منه غَضيرُ
5. Neither was our unity fragmented, nor was our sleep
Disturbed, nor were our hearts perturbed
٥. لا شملُنا مُتَصَدِّعٌ لا نَومنا
مُتَقَطِّعٌ لا قَلبُنا مَذعورُ
6. Until what befell the overwhelmed, from a torrent
Of disasters bursting forth, afflicted us.
٦. حتى دَهانا ما دَهى المَغمورَ مِن
سَيلٍ له بِمَصائِبٍ تَفجيرُ
7. What was the fault of children and old women
In homes collapsed upon them?
٧. ما ذنبُ أطفالٍ وذنبُ عَجائِزٍ
في الدُّورِ دُكَّت فَوقهُنَّ الدُّورُ
8. How did the wealth of the wicked and their party
Avail them, when ruin befell their homes?
٨. ما كان أغنَى الآثِمينَ وحِزبَهُم
عمَّا جَنَوهُ ومالَهُ الدُّورُ
9. Let them now taste the evil of their deeds;
The requital of evil acts is further evil.
٩. دعهُم يَذوقوا الآنَ شَرَّ فِعالهِم
فَجزاءُ أفعالِ الشُّرورِ شُرورُ
10. Their captive was of no avail when their slain
Perished, nor did their slain avail when captive.
١٠. فأسِيرهُم لم يُغنِ عنهُ قَتيلُهمُ
وقَتيلُهم لم يُغنِ عنهُ أسيرُ
11. How many a refugee from his family and homeland
Has ruin predestined and led to perdition.
١١. كم نازحٍ عَن أهلِه وبِلادِه
قد ساقَهُ لِهَلاكِه المَقدُورُ
12. Captivity and slaughter was his fate,
And for his people, destruction and devastation.
١٢. ألأسرَ والتَّقتيلَ كان نَصيبُه
ولِشَعبِه التَّخريبُ والتَّدميرُ
13. O day of Tunis, will you tell us what
You witnessed? For much can you recount.
١٣. يا يومَ تونسَ هل سَتُخبِرُنا بِمَا
شاهَدته فالقَولُ منكَ كَثيرُ
14. How the valiant Africans, when battle raged,
Raised their fierce and wild cry!
١٤. كيفَ الأفارقةُ القَساوِرَةُ الأُلَى
يَعلو لهم يومَ اللِّقاءِ زَئيرُ
15. True is He who called them a folk
While others are but a folk inept and void.
١٥. صدق الَّذِي بالقومِ قد ناداهُمُ
فالقُوم هُم والغَيرُ قَومٌ بورُ
16. They returned to us with banners of victory held high
And the tails of their glorious steeds dragged low.
١٦. عادوا لَنا مَرفوعةً أعلامُ نص
رِهِمُ وذَيلُ فَخارِهِم مَجرورُ
17. They returned, their bags filled with arms
Of the foe, while their resolve remained firm.
١٧. عادوا وكُلُّ حَقيبَةٍ ملأى من أس
لابِ العِدا وَوِطابُهُم مَعمورُ
18. The warriors of France's free army, they
Whose valor the day of glory brought to light.
١٨. وغُزاةُ جَيشِ فَرَنسةَ الأحرارُ مَن
لَهُمُ بَدا يومَ الفَخارِ ظُهورُ
19. They sacrificed themselves out of obligation
Undeterred by any warning of risk.
١٩. بَذَلوا نُفوسَهُمُ ضَحِيَّةَ واجبٍ
لم يَثنِ مِن عَزماتِهِم تَحذيرُ
20. Their goal being the liberation of lands
So liberation drew near their lands.
٢٠. غاياتُهم تحَريرُ أوطانٍ لَهُم
فدَنا إلى أوطانِهِم تَحريرُ
21. Eager for a decisive day of justice
When their resolve would be made known.
٢١. مُتَلَهِّفينَ لِيَومِ فَصلٍ حاسِمٍ
يُبدونَ فيه ما تُكِنُّ صُدورُ
22. They returned, the annals of war writ
With lines of sublime honor for them.
٢٢. عادوا وفي ساحِ الوَغى مَكتوبَةٌ
لَهُمُ مِنَ الشَّرَفِ الرَّفيعِ سُطورُ
23. They returned to us, their chests filled
With joy, while the breasts of their foes simmered.
٢٣. عادوا لنا وصُدورُهم مَثلوجَةٌ
فَرَحاً وصَدرُ عَدُوِّهم مَحرورُ
24. Say to the foe who saw no glimpse of allied
Arms surging like a raging sea:
٢٤. قًُل لِلعَدُوِّ ولم يُشاهِد من قِوى ال
حُلَفاءِ بَحراً بالسِّلاَح يَمورُ
25. Ask your broken army about them in battle,
Your broken army will tell you about them.
٢٥. سَل جَيشَكَ المَكسورَ عَنهم في الوَغى
يُخبِرك عنهم جَيشُك المَكسورُ
26. The start of a victory, and every beginning
Is thanked, for its conclusion will be praised.
٢٦. بدءُ انتصارٍ ذا وكُلُّ بِدايةٍ
شُكِرَت فإنَّ خِتامَها مَشكورُ
27. We declared, congratulations on a victory
That encompassed them, while woe and ruin encompassed the others.
٢٧. قلنا الهَناءُ به انتِصارا مثلما
قد عَمَّهُم ويلٌ به وثُبورُ
28. Far be it from our Morocco to taste calamity!
May our beloved king reign there as prince!
٢٨. حاشا لِمَغرِبِنا يذوقُ رَزِيَّةً
ومَليكُنا المَحبوبُ فيه أميرُ
29. Victory is linked to his rising, so may
Our prince and king remain victorious!
٢٩. النَّصرُ مُقتِرنٌ بِطَلعَتِه فَدا
مَ أميرُنا ومَليكُنا المَنصورُ
